CBR is only one part of a healthy YouTube live stream. If Live Control Room still shows a warning, start with its exact message, then check that your encoder’s actual codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframes, audio, and stream format match the selected YouTube ingestion configuration. YouTube checks these properties independently.
Start with the warning in Live Control Room
Open the Live Dashboard or Live Control Room and read the message beside the Health Indicator, including its timestamp. YouTube’s messages describe the stream arriving at YouTube; they are more useful than assuming CBR itself is at fault. Red errors are critical and may stop an event from starting or cause viewer problems. Yellow errors are moderate and may reduce quality. An unresolved message continues to appear. YouTube’s live streaming error messages explain the documented categories.
- A bitrate warning points to the target bitrate or available outbound capacity.
- A keyframe warning points to keyframe timing or GOP configuration.
- An incorrect-format or codec warning points to the selected ingestion configuration and the format your encoder is actually sending.
- A resolution warning points to the actual output dimensions or a mismatch with the selected ingestion settings.
- An audio or stream-count warning points to missing, unsupported, or multiple audio/video streams.
These are practical interpretations of YouTube’s warning categories, not a diagnosis of a stream that has not been inspected. Follow the wording of your particular message.
Verify the encoder settings that CBR does not cover
Codec and stream format
Check that the encoder’s output format and video codec match the ingestion configuration selected for the YouTube stream. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS workflows, while its error guidance includes format-specific messages. Do not apply a general recommendation in place of the requirement for your chosen ingestion setup. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance and its live stream settings page.

Bitrate mode and numeric target
Keep bitrate encoding set to CBR, then verify the target number for the stream’s codec, resolution, and frame rate. For a custom stream key with manual resolution settings, YouTube’s current recommendations include these examples; they are not universal targets for every ingestion setup.
| Codec | 1080p60 | 1080p30 | 720p60 | 720p30 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 17 Mbps | 14 Mbps | 8 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 12 Mbps | 10 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
These are recommended bitrate settings from YouTube Help’s current encoder page, accessed in 2026. Consult that page for other resolutions and frame rates, and use the Live Control Room’s exact requirement when it differs. If your available upload bandwidth cannot sustain the chosen setting, YouTube advises lowering the resolution if that option is available.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
Keyframe interval and GOP
Set keyframes every two seconds where possible; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds. Use a closed GOP if your encoder exposes that control. At 30 fps, two seconds corresponds to one keyframe every 60 frames. Frame rate and keyframe frequency are related, so check both rather than changing bitrate to address a keyframe warning.
Resolution, frame rate, and scan type
Confirm that the encoder is outputting the same resolution and frame rate configured for the stream. YouTube’s encoder guidance supports up to 60 fps, but a particular ingestion configuration or error message may specify a lower maximum. Use progressive video: YouTube says interlaced incoming video is unsupported.

Audio and number of streams
Verify that the incoming feed contains one audio stream and one video stream, and that neither is missing. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio. Its error guidance also identifies unsupported audio codecs, more than two channels, and multiple audio streams as possible causes. Apply any sample-rate or channel requirement stated in your specific warning.

A correct encoder target can still produce trouble if the connection cannot sustain it. YouTube recommends leaving 20% of available outbound bandwidth as headroom for the total stream bitrate; other people or devices sharing the connection can reduce the bandwidth available to the encoder. If you send primary and backup feeds, account for the bandwidth used by both. The headroom recommendation is from YouTube Help’s current guidance, accessed in 2026: Streaming tips.

A still image or silent test may not reveal problems that appear with the show’s real motion and audio.
Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you see | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Bitrate warning | Compare the numeric target with YouTube’s recommendation for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate; check available upload capacity and reduce resolution if needed. |
| Keyframe or GOP warning | Set a two-second keyframe interval, do not exceed four seconds, and use a closed GOP if available. |
| Incorrect format or codec warning | Match the encoder’s actual output format and codec to the selected YouTube ingestion configuration. |
| Resolution or frame-rate warning | Compare the actual encoder output dimensions and frame rate with the selected configuration and any specific maximum in the warning. |
| Audio warning | Confirm audio is present, uses a supported codec, and meets the warning’s channel and sample-rate requirements. |
| Multiple-stream warning | Check the encoder output for duplicate audio or video streams; aim for one of each. |
| Warning persists despite changes | Read the latest timestamped message, confirm the settings were applied to the active encoder output, and run another representative test. |
Or let it run in the cloud
