1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA YouTube stream dropping offline after you change OBS’s bitrate does not, by itself, prove the new bitrate is the cause. First note YouTube Live Control Room’s exact stream-health warning or error and check OBS’s output status and log. Then assess bitrate alongside codec, resolution, frame rate, encoder health, and upload capacity; changing the bitrate again before capturing those clues can make the cause harder to identify.
Start with the exact error, not another bitrate change
Before changing settings, record the active OBS bitrate, video codec, resolution, and frame rate. In YouTube Live Control Room, read the stream-health warning or error and note when it appears: at startup, after the bitrate change, or later in the broadcast. Check OBS’s status and log for an encoder or connection error at the same time.
Those messages are diagnostic evidence. A disconnect can involve encoder output, the internet connection, setup such as a stream key, or settings that do not fit the available upload bandwidth. The timing of a bitrate change is useful context, but it does not identify which one happened. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health and reviewing its messages (YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions; YouTube Help: Troubleshoot live streaming issues).
Check whether the full video settings match
Bitrate recommendations depend on the ingestion codec, resolution, and frame rate. A number that is appropriate for one combination may not suit another, so compare the complete active OBS output settings with YouTube’s current encoder guidance rather than treating bitrate in isolation.

Use YouTube’s guidance for the codec and format you selected
YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP or RTMPS and H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video, up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Recommended bitrate ranges vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. As examples for H.264, YouTube lists 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are platform recommendations for those specific combinations—not universal targets or proof that a particular bitrate change caused a disconnect.
Open YouTube’s bitrate table and match the row to your codec, resolution, and frame rate before adjusting OBS. If you change resolution or frame rate, reassess the corresponding bitrate guidance as well. YouTube also recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport to its servers; that is a connection-setting consideration, not an explanation for this symptom unless the observed error points to transport or connection setup.

Make one controlled change at a time
Once you have captured the error and current settings, compare them with YouTube’s recommendations and change only the setting that the evidence or comparison calls for. Record the new value and run a test stream. Changing multiple output settings at once makes it harder to tell which adjustment helped—or whether the problem is elsewhere.
Check OBS and encoder health
Check that OBS and the selected encoder are operating normally, and look for encoder errors or signs that the system is overloaded. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking encoder errors and CPU load when the stream looks or sounds poor inside the encoder. If OBS offers a local recording or archive, inspect it too: this can help distinguish a problem already present in the encoded output from trouble occurring farther along the delivery path.

If the picture or sound is poor in the encoder output, investigate that output and the encoder before treating the viewer-side symptom as a bitrate-only issue. YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting guidance describes these checks (Troubleshoot live streaming issues; Set up your encoder for live streaming).
Check the stream key only when the error points to setup
A stream key is a separate possible setup issue, but the fact that a stream went offline after a bitrate change does not establish a key problem. If YouTube reports an encoder start error or the symptoms point to a key mismatch, get the appropriate key in Live Control Room and update the encoder with it. Do not reset the key as a routine first step when the error gives no reason to suspect it. YouTube documents the key and encoder setup steps in its encoder setup guidance and troubleshooting guidance.

Test the outbound internet connection
If OBS’s output appears healthy but YouTube reports trouble or viewers see interruptions, test the strength and stability of the outbound connection. Compare the result with the demands of the chosen stream settings. YouTube recommends contacting your internet service provider if the test identifies a connection problem.
A connection test is especially relevant when stream health indicates a transmission issue; it is not a reason to assume every bitrate-related disconnect is caused by the ISP. Follow the diagnostic evidence and check YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting steps.

Lower resolution if bandwidth cannot support the stream
If your available upload bandwidth cannot support the selected resolution, YouTube’s error guidance says to consider lowering the resolution. After changing it, check the bitrate recommendation that matches the new resolution, codec, and frame rate; do not keep a bitrate selected for the old format without reassessing it.
Use the stream-health message and connection test to guide this decision. Lowering resolution is a practical response to insufficient bandwidth, not a universal fix for every disconnect (YouTube Help: Troubleshoot live streaming issues; YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).
Test the settings before an important broadcast
Run a test stream with representative audio and motion, then monitor YouTube’s stream health during the test. This checks the selected OBS output and delivery conditions in a less consequential setting. YouTube Help’s encoder guide says: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
Common symptoms and the next check
| What you observe | What to check next |
|---|---|
| YouTube shows a stream-health warning or error | Use the exact message to direct the next check; capture it before changing more settings. |
| The picture or sound is poor inside OBS’s encoder output | Check encoder errors and CPU load, and inspect a local archive if available. |
| OBS output looks healthy, but YouTube or viewers report interruptions | Test outbound internet strength; contact your ISP if the test identifies a connection problem. |
| YouTube reports an encoder start error or evidence points to a key mismatch | Get the stream key in Live Control Room and update the encoder. |
| Bandwidth cannot support the selected resolution | Consider lowering resolution, then reassess the matching bitrate recommendation. |
| No clear cause appears after a change | Keep the captured error and settings, make one evidence-based change at a time, and test again before the next important broadcast. |
