If your YouTube stream key seems to have vanished from OBS, first select the OBS Profile you used for YouTube. Then check whether OBS is connected to YouTube by account sign-in or by a manually entered key. For a key-based setup, retrieve the key in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and enter it under OBS > Settings > Stream. The timing may suggest an update caused the problem, but that cause is not established; a different active Profile or connection method can also explain what you see.
1. Check the active OBS Profile
OBS Profiles save most settings related to outputs, including Stream settings and a connected account. Selecting a different Profile can therefore make the YouTube configuration appear to be missing.
- In OBS, open the Profile menu at the top of the window.
- Select the Profile you previously used to stream to YouTube.
- Open Settings > Stream and check the service and connection method.
If you have an export of the original Profile, OBS provides Profile > Import/Export to import its settings. Profiles do not contain Scenes; OBS manages those separately in Scene Collections. See the OBS Project’s Profiles documentation.
2. Check whether OBS uses a key or account sign-in
In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Check whether YouTube is selected, whether OBS shows an account connection, and whether a Stream Key field is available. OBS’s Stream Settings guide describes this section as the place to select a service, choose or enter a server, and enter a key.

- Key-based setup: You need a YouTube stream key in OBS’s Stream Key field.
- Account sign-in: OBS connects through your YouTube account rather than relying on a manually entered key. In that case, a missing key field does not necessarily mean a credential disappeared.
YouTube treats software sign-in problems as a separate troubleshooting path and directs users to their streaming software provider for help with sign-in compatibility. See YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting guidance.
3. Retrieve the YouTube key and enter it in OBS
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live to open the Live Control Room.
- Select Stream and locate Stream key.
- Copy the key and paste it into the Stream Key field in OBS under Settings > Stream.
- Confirm that OBS is set to the intended YouTube service and connection settings before streaming.
YouTube describes stream keys as credentials that tell an encoder where to send a feed and allow YouTube to accept it. Its Help page, Manage live stream settings, compares them to a stream’s “password and address.” Treat the key as a credential: do not share it publicly.

4. Reset the key only if you need a new one
If retrieving and re-entering the existing key does not resolve the issue, or you believe the key may have been exposed, use Reset beside the hidden key in the Live Control Room. Copy the replacement key and update OBS’s Stream Key field; resetting changes the credential, so OBS must use the new one. YouTube permits channel owners and managers to reset a key, but editors and viewers do not have that permission.
5. Test the setup before your next stream
When practical, connect OBS and check the preview in YouTube’s Live Control Room before an event. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance describes connecting the encoder and checking the preview. This gives you a chance to catch a wrong Profile, service, sign-in state, or key before you intend to go live.
