If OBS is connected to your YouTube account, it may hide the stream-key field because the account-authorized workflow does not need you to enter a key manually. Open Settings > Stream and check the selected service and connection mode. If you need a key field, switch to the stream-key workflow when OBS offers it. If that does not resolve the problem, check the YouTube channel’s livestream eligibility and activation status.
Why the stream-key field is missing or disabled
OBS changes the controls shown in Settings > Stream according to the selected service and authorization state. When a YouTube account is connected, OBS may handle authorization through that account and hide the manual key-entry field. The exact labels and controls vary by OBS build and service configuration; the OBS Project’s current stream-settings code documents these conditional controls, but older releases may differ: OBS stream-settings source.
A hidden field does not, by itself, mean the YouTube channel is ineligible to livestream. Account-connected OBS mode and YouTube channel eligibility are separate things to check.
Restore the field or use the connected-account workflow
- Open OBS stream settings. Go to Settings > Stream and confirm the service is YouTube. If you intend to enter a key manually, choose the YouTube RTMPS service where available.
- Check how OBS is connected. If OBS shows a connected YouTube account, decide whether to keep that workflow. If you specifically need manual key entry, look for a control such as Use Stream Key and select it. If that control is absent, the precise options depend on your OBS version, selected service, and authorization setup.
- Use the account workflow if it fits your setup. You do not need to reveal or reset a key simply because OBS has authorized your YouTube account. Confirm that the connected account is the channel you intend to stream to.
Find and enter the YouTube stream key
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live, then select Stream.
- In Live Control Room, copy the current stream key. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat the key as a credential and do not share it publicly. See YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.
- Return to OBS. Under Settings > Stream, select the manual key workflow if available, then paste the key into the Stream Key field and apply the settings.
- Start the stream in OBS and check YouTube Live Control Room to confirm that the intended channel receives the encoder feed.
If OBS still offers no manual-key option, record your OBS version and build, operating system, selected service, and whether an account appears connected. Consult current OBS support resources for that build rather than assuming reinstalling OBS or buying hardware will restore the field.

Check whether YouTube allows the channel to livestream
YouTube says the channel must be verified and must have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time livestream activation can take up to 24 hours. Check the intended channel in YouTube Studio and make sure it is the same channel OBS is authorized to use. See YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.
These requirements affect whether the channel can livestream; they do not explain every missing OBS key field. If the channel is eligible but the field remains hidden, return to the OBS service and authorization checks above.

If YouTube rejects the key
A rejected key is different from a field that is not visible. In YouTube Live Control Room, copy the current key and replace the one entered in OBS. If you suspect the key has been exposed, a channel owner or manager can reset it in Live Control Room; after resetting, update OBS with the newly generated key. YouTube’s guidance for encoder issues is at YouTube Help: Fix live stream issues.
Common symptoms and fixes
- No key box, but YouTube account is connected: OBS may be using account authorization. Keep that workflow or choose Use Stream Key if your build provides it.
- The key box is present, but the stream is rejected: Copy the current key from Live Control Room and replace the OBS entry. Reset it only if needed, then update OBS with the replacement.
- OBS connects, but the channel cannot go live: Check verification, restrictions in the previous 90 days, and whether first-time activation is still processing.
- The wrong channel receives the feed: Verify which YouTube account OBS authorized and which channel is selected in Studio.
- The labels in a guide do not match your OBS window: OBS controls vary by version, selected service, and authorization state. Note those details before seeking version-specific help.
