Managers can reset a YouTube stream key; editors cannot. Both roles can manage live streams, but that permission does not give editors access to every stream-key action. Viewers can monitor stream settings without seeing the key or managing live streams.
What each YouTube channel role can do with a stream key

YouTube Help describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat one as a credential: give a delegate the channel role they need rather than sending them the key or sharing your Google Account sign-in. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.
Why “manage live streams” does not let an editor reset a key
YouTube grants editors the ability to manage live streams, but separately withholds permission to manage channel permissions or delete and reset stream keys. The stream-settings help page confirms that only a channel owner or manager can reset a key. “Manage live streams” therefore should not be read as unrestricted access to every setting or credential.
Choose a role and grant access safely
- Open permissions: In YouTube Studio, go to Settings → Permissions.
- Invite the delegate: Invite them using their email address, then choose the role that matches their responsibilities. YouTube channel permissions let you delegate without sharing Google Account credentials.
- Use the least-permissive suitable role: Choose Editor if the person needs to manage live streams but does not need to reset keys or manage permissions. Choose Manager only when those broader capabilities are required.
- Review or remove access: Return to Settings → Permissions, find the delegate, and change their role or remove access. An invitation that is not accepted expires after 30 days.
YouTube’s channel-permissions guidance covers invitations, role management, and limitations on delegate access, including features such as YouTube Music, YouTube Kids, and YouTube APIs. Reset a key if it may have been exposed
If someone outside the trusted team may have obtained the key, an owner or manager should reset it in YouTube Studio, then replace the old key in the encoder. Resetting makes the old key unsuitable for future stream connections, so coordinate the change with whoever operates the encoder.
- In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live → Stream.
- Use the stream-key reset control in the stream settings. You must be an owner or manager to do this.
- Copy the new key into the encoder’s stream settings, replacing the old key, and save the configuration.
- Confirm the encoder connects to the intended YouTube stream using the new key.
Do not send the new key in an unsecured message or publish it. If an editor needs to operate a stream but cannot reset the key, an owner or manager must handle any reset and update the encoder configuration.

Role permissions are separate from live-stream eligibility
A role that permits live-stream management does not by itself make a channel eligible to stream. YouTube’s getting-started guidance lists channel verification and no live-stream restrictions in the preceding 90 days among its requirements, and states that the minimum age for live streaming is 16. Check YouTube’s current requirements for the channel and account before troubleshooting role access. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.
Common access problems
- An editor cannot reset a key: This is an intentional role limitation, not a broken permission. Ask an owner or manager to perform the reset.
- A viewer can see settings but cannot operate a stream: Viewers can monitor settings except the key, but cannot manage live streams. An owner should assign a suitable role through Settings → Permissions.
- A delegate cannot find the channel or accept the invitation: Check that the invitation was sent to the correct email address and is still within its 30-day acceptance window. Reinvite or adjust access in the Permissions page if needed.
- A stream stops working after a key reset: Replace the old key in the encoder with the new one and reconnect. Resetting the key in YouTube does not itself update encoder software.
- A qualified delegate still cannot use a YouTube feature: Some features are not supported for delegates, including YouTube Music, YouTube Kids, and YouTube APIs. Role assignment does not remove those product limitations.
