YouTube says some mobile operators do not support its text messages or calls, and a number can be associated with no more than two channels per year. You can verify from YouTube Studio or youtube.com/verify; live streaming is one of the features unlocked by phone verification.
First, check whether phone verification is the step you need
YouTube phone verification unlocks intermediate features, including live streaming. In YouTube Studio, check your channel’s feature eligibility to confirm whether phone verification is still pending. Feature access may also be affected by channel restrictions, so a missing SMS is not necessarily the only reason live streaming is unavailable.
For an India-based channel, open YouTube Studio and go to Settings → Channel → Feature eligibility → Intermediate features → Verify phone number. You can also use youtube.com/verify. Sign in to the channel you want to verify, choose how to receive the code, and enter the six-digit code when it arrives.
What to do when the SMS does not arrive
- Wait a few minutes. YouTube notes that text messages may be delayed, including in densely populated areas or where an operator’s infrastructure is weak.
- Choose the voice-call option. If the SMS still has not arrived after a few minutes, request a call and listen for the verification code. YouTube’s guidance is: “If you’ve waited more than a few minutes and still haven’t received our text message, try the voice call option.”
- Try a number on another operator. YouTube says not all operators support text messages or voice calls from Google. If neither delivery method works, try a number from a different operator. YouTube’s published guidance does not identify which Indian operators are supported, so there is no official carrier ranking to rely on.
- Check whether the number has reached its limit. YouTube allows a phone number to be associated with no more than two channels per year. If the verification flow says the maximum has been reached, use a different eligible number.
Once the channel is verified
Return to YouTube Studio → Settings → Channel → Feature eligibility and check the status of Intermediate features. Phone verification can unlock live streaming, but other channel restrictions may still affect access.

For an India-based channel, YouTube displays a “phone verified” label on the channel’s About page. YouTube says the label is visible to users in India on computers, mobile devices, and the YouTube app. The label was introduced to comply with India’s Information Technology (Guidelines for Intermediaries and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021; it is not a public display of your phone number.
If SMS and calls both fail
- Try the other delivery method if you have not already done so.
- Try a number from a different operator, and make sure it has not reached YouTube’s two-channels-per-year limit.
- If another eligible number and both supported delivery methods do not resolve the issue, contact your mobile operator or YouTube support. YouTube’s help pages do not provide India-specific carrier success rates or a list of unsupported operators.
