In The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, small collectible creatures can be cooked with monster parts to make elixirs that grant useful effects. The best critter depends on the challenge: some support resistance to heat, cold, electricity, or slipping, while others help restore stamina. There is no single verified total for “all critters,” because reference guides use different creature categories; this guide focuses on collectible insects, frogs, lizards, and fairies rather than every animal or living thing in Hyrule.
What counts as a critter in Tears of the Kingdom?
“Critter” is a convenient player-facing label, not an official in-game category. This guide uses it for small collectible creatures—especially insects, frogs, lizards, and fairies—that can be gathered for materials or elixirs. It does not claim to catalogue fish, mounts, ordinary wildlife, or every other creature in the game.
Creature databases organize entries differently, and their catalogue numbers are identifiers, not a reconciled count of every creature that might fit this definition. For a broad index with entries and locations, see GameWith’s Tears of the Kingdom creature list; for compendium-style descriptions and effects, see Gamer Guides’ creature database.
What do critters do?
Most of the examples below are valuable because their special effects can be carried into an elixir. Add a suitable creature to monster parts when cooking; the creature supplies the effect, while the monster parts help determine the elixir’s duration. Nintendo’s example is the Summerwing Butterfly, which can be combined with monster parts for an elixir in a cold-weather context. Nintendo also cautions that meal and elixir effects do not stack, so check the active effect and its timer before using another preparation. See Nintendo’s “Warm and fuzzy in Hyrule” tip.

| Critter | Documented effect or use | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Summerwing Butterfly | Elixir ingredient used in a cold-weather context | Nintendo specifically names it as an insect to combine with monster parts; the cited tip does not establish a universal habitat or collection condition. |
| Sticky Frog | Slip resistance | Gamer Guides associates it with climbing on wet surfaces. |
| Sticky Lizard | Slip resistance | A separate creature entry from the Sticky Frog; do not confuse either with ordinary frog or lizard wildlife. |
| Thunderwing Butterfly | Electrical resistance | Its listed resistance is electrical, not heat resistance. |
| Winterwing Butterfly | Heat resistance | Its listed resistance is heat, not electrical resistance. |
| Restless Cricket | Stamina-recovery elixir ingredient | Gamer Guides describes its use for stamina recovery. |

How to find and collect critters
Conditions and collection tactics differ by species. A general creature index can help identify an entry, but confirm its own habitat and conditions rather than assuming one insect’s behavior applies to all of them. The GameFAQs walkthrough gives species-specific collection advice, including these approaches:
Rank #2
- Ultrahand: Using the new Ultrahand ability, Link can pick up, move, and rotate almost any object, and can even attach objects together to create bridges, vehicles, and more!
- Fuse: Magically fuse almost any object to Link’s current weapon, shield, or arrow to increase durability, damage, or even add a new effect. Experiment with lots of different combinations to come up with surprising—and sometimes hilarious—results!
- Ascend: Add a new dimension to your exploration with Ascend, which gives Link the ability to pass through solid objects above him. Rise up through ceilings, hillsides, and even certain enemies to create seemingly impossible shortcuts.
- Recall: Use Recall to make objects in motion move backward through time, letting Link ride fallen boulders skyward, recover thrown weapons, or send projectiles back where they came from.
- Check weather for the relevant insect. The walkthrough reports that some insects appear in rain or thunderstorms. Treat weather as a clue for those species, not a universal rule.
- Search grass for the relevant grassland creatures. Cutting grass can reveal certain creatures in the walkthrough’s examples; it is not a guarantee for every critter.
- Use stealth around easily startled insects. Sneaking helps you approach the species described as skittish before they flee.
Once collected, use the creature’s effect to plan the next leg of a trip. Nintendo recommends meals to withstand environmental conditions and restore stamina while reaching difficult places; its player guidance also covers cold-resistant clothing and travel options. Meals and elixirs can each be useful, but their effects do not stack with one another. Nintendo’s guidance is in Nintendo Support, including its article General Tips for Playing The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom: “Remember to cook! Meals can help you withstand the elements and restore your stamina when you’re trying to access hard-to-reach places.”

Start with the obstacle rather than collecting at random. If the route calls for a resistance, match the creature’s listed effect to the hazard; if the challenge is a long climb or other stamina demand, consider a stamina-supporting ingredient such as the Restless Cricket. For wet-surface climbing, the Sticky Frog or Sticky Lizard is the relevant example in the compendium descriptions. If you already have the needed effect from a meal or elixir, check its timer before using another preparation, since those effects do not stack.
