The Depths contain no shrines, although Lightroots in the Depths usually correspond to Surface shrine locations.
Open the interactive TOTK shrine map to search by name, switch between Surface, Sky, and Depths layers, inspect coordinates, and combine shrine markers with caves, wells, chasms, labyrinths, crystal quests, and Lightroots. For a text-based list, use the complete shrine checklist with names, regions, coordinates, and types.
Spoiler warning: the sections below identify all-shrine rewards, hidden entrances, shrine quests, labyrinth challenges, and other late-game locations.
Quick answer: how many shrines are in TOTK?
| Map layer | Shrines | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
| Surface | 120 | Open-world shrines, cave shrines, well entrances, underground ruins, crystal quests, labyrinths, and shrine quests |
| Sky | 32 | Sky-island shrines, diving challenges, sky labyrinths, mirror puzzles, sky crystals, and sky orbs |
| Depths | 0 | Lightroots and other discoveries, but no Shrines of Light |
| Total | 152 | Every completed shrine gives one Light of Blessing |
These totals are confirmed by the major complete shrine guides from Game8, PowerPyx, and Nintendo Life. A Lightroot is not a Depths shrine: it is a separate Depths landmark that can help you find the corresponding shrine on the Surface.

Start with the Zelda Dungeon interactive map. Its shrine layer covers all 152 shrines and connects markers to individual walkthroughs. It is the most useful option when you are looking for one missing shrine rather than planning a whole-region route.
#1 Best Overall
- This Trends The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - Map Wall Poster uses high-resolution artwork and is printed on PhotoArt Gloss Poster Paper which enhances colors with a high-quality look and feel
- HIGH QUALITY ART PRINT is ready-to-frame or can be hung on the wall using poster mounts, clips, push pins, or thumb tacks
- MADE IN THE USA and OFFICIALLY LICENSED
- PERFECT SIZE for any room; poster is 22.375" x 34"
- EASILY DECORATE any space to create the perfect decor for a party, bedroom, bathroom, kids room, living room, office, dorm, and more
For the most reliable search, configure the map as follows:
- Turn on the Surface and Sky layers. Leave the Depths layer available for Lightroot comparisons.
- Filter the map to Shrines only.
- Search for the shrine name or browse the region where your missing marker should be.
- Turn on caves, wells, chasms, labyrinths, Shrine Quests, and crystal markers when the shrine pin is not visible from the surface.
- Enable the Lightroots layer when checking for an undiscovered Surface shrine.
- Use the map’s progress feature if available, but keep a separate in-game check: an external map’s checkbox cannot tell whether your shrine is merely seen, activated, or completed in the game.
Useful alternatives include the Game8 interactive map, the Gamer Guides shrine map, and the GamerTW interactive map. A static, region-by-region overview is available in Nintendo Life’s shrine guide; static maps are useful for offline planning, but they do not offer the same search, layer, or progress tools.
Complete 152-shrine checklist
Use the Thonky shrine list as the text checklist: it provides the canonical shrine names, region labels, coordinates, and shrine types in a compact format. For solution pages, use the PowerPyx all-shrines guide. The interactive map is better for filtering by layer and access route.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →| Checklist field | How to use it |
|---|---|
| Shrine name | Use the exact in-game name as the primary identifier. Region labels and spellings vary between older guides. |
| Layer | Confirm whether the marker is on the Surface or Sky layer. A high-Z Sky shrine will not be found by searching directly below its Surface map position. |
| Coordinates | Use the three-value X, Y, Z coordinate display together with the layer and shrine name. |
| Access route | Check whether the pin is open-world, cave-based, a well, a chasm or ruin, a crystal quest, a labyrinth, a time trial, or another external challenge. |
| Shrine type | Identify whether the interior is a puzzle, Combat Training, Proving Grounds, or Rauru’s Blessing shrine. |
| Status | Compare the external checklist with the shrine icon in your in-game map; do not treat a placed pin as completion. |
Several older pages still say there are 150 shrines or omit Simosiwak and Siyamotsus. Some also have stale map images, misspellings, or incorrect region labels. Cross-check any list that does not total 152 against the interactive map and a second complete list. Nintendo Life’s own page comments document some of these historical omissions, which is why no single early guide should be treated as the final authority.
Surface shrine locations
The Surface contains 120 shrines, but not all 120 are visible from the field. When following a regional checklist, distinguish the map region from the physical entrance: a shrine can be assigned to the Surface while sitting in a cave, well, underground ruin, or area below normal ground level.
Central Hyrule and Hyrule Field
Begin here if you are completing the early game or have only unlocked the central towers. The area includes open-world shrines near roads and settlements, as well as shrines hidden under cliffs, in caves, and beneath structures. The central region is also a common source of apparent omissions because the map pin may sit above the actual cave entrance.
Great Hyrule Forest
Forest shrines are often obscured by terrain and the region’s limited visibility. Search the forest floor, nearby caves, and the approaches to Korok Forest rather than relying only on a distant tower view. If a marker is close to a Lightroot but not exactly on top of it, inspect the surrounding cliffs and underground entrances.

Hebra and Tabantha
Hebra combines visible mountain shrines with cave and ice-cave routes. Otak Shrine, for example, is inside Icefall Foothills Cave. Snow, vertical terrain, and cold-weather requirements can make a shrine sensor appear to point at an empty location when the actual entrance is above or below Link.
Eldin
Eldin’s shrine routes frequently involve caves, vertical volcanic terrain, and heat management. Search around mine entrances and rock formations, and use the map’s cave layer rather than assuming a marker on a mountain face can be entered from that exact point.
Akkala
Akkala contains open-world shrines, cave shrines, combat challenges, and access routes tied to the region’s high cliffs and islands. Check the map around the Akkala Highlands, the coast, and labyrinth entrances when a Surface marker is not accessible from the nearest road.
Lanayru
Lanayru’s shrines are spread across the lowlands, wetlands, Zora territory, mountains, caves, and waterways. Water level, cliffs, and cave entrances are more important here than straight-line distance. The Surface map also sits directly below several Sky routes, so confirm the layer before travelling.
Necluda
Necluda has shrines near villages, roads, mountains, beaches, wells, and caves. Some are easy to see but difficult to reach from the marker; others are concealed under the terrain. The Mayahisik Shrine, inside Retsam Forest Cave, is especially important because it is part of the Shrine Sensor unlock sequence.
Faron
Faron’s shrines are distributed through forests, highlands, lakes, and jungle-like terrain. Several require solving an environmental puzzle or reaching a remote cave rather than simply walking to a visible shrine shell.
Gerudo
Gerudo shrines include desert ruins, caves, underground areas, shrine quests, and locations affected by the region’s story progression. Chichim Shrine is in the Ancient Prison Ruins, while Suariwak Shrine is hidden inside the Yiga Blademaster Station. Do not discard a marker because the desert surface appears empty.

Sky shrine locations
The Sky has 32 shrines. They are separate from the Surface total and often require a launch from a Skyview Tower, a Zonai-device flight, careful gliding, a diving challenge, or a route through a sky island chain.
Great Sky Island
The four tutorial shrines are:
- Ukouh Shrine
- In-isa Shrine
- Gutanbac Shrine
- Nachoyah Shrine
These teach Ultrahand, Fuse, Ascend, and Recall. Nintendo’s official guide shows the tutorial route and how to reach the fourth shrine.
Hebra and the northwestern sky
The Hebra sky route includes shrines associated with the Rising Island Chain and the Wind Temple approach. Mayaumekis Shrine is part of that route. Other sky challenges include diving and island traversal, so a Surface pin directly beneath the target is not a substitute for checking the Sky layer.
Central Hyrule and island challenges
Taunhiy Shrine is reached through the Courage Island diving challenge, while Simosiwak Shrine is associated with the Bravery Island challenge. These shrines are easy to miss if you search only large, permanent islands or only scan from the ground.
Gerudo sky
Siyamotsus Shrine is in the South Lomei Sky Labyrinth, and Tenbez Shrine is in the North Lomei Sky Labyrinth. Ga-ahisas and Mayasiar involve light-and-mirror puzzles. Labyrinth markers, floating platforms, and the Surface labyrinth are separate pieces of the same route, so enable all relevant map markers.

Lanayru and eastern sky
Jirutagumac Shrine is hidden in a sky orb, and Sihajog Shrine is reached through the Valor Island diving challenge. Other eastern-sky shrines require island-chain traversal, launch points, or Zonai devices. When a coordinate has a high Z value, search the Sky map, not the terrain below it.
Other sky-island routes
The remaining Sky shrines are distributed around the Eldin, Akkala, Necluda, Faron, and other sky archipelagos. Use the Sky layer and sort the full checklist by region. A Skyview Tower can launch Link high enough to see some shrines, but it does not automatically reveal or complete every shrine marker.
How to read TOTK shrine coordinates
Coordinates are shown as three values in the game’s coordinate order: X, Y, Z. A guide may display an entry such as -1257, -1487, 1008. The values indicate horizontal position, depth or elevation, and vertical elevation according to the in-game coordinate display; always preserve the signs and use the map layer supplied by the guide.
Do not reject a shrine because two guides disagree by a few units. One author may record the shrine entrance, another may record a map marker, and a third may record Link’s position beside the shrine. Nintendo Life and Thonky occasionally show small coordinate differences. The exact shrine name and the Surface/Sky layer are more reliable than an isolated coordinate copied without context.

How to find shrines without an external map
Use a Skyview Tower and the Scope
Nintendo’s official guide recommends this basic method:
- Launch from a Skyview Tower or climb to another high vantage point.
- Press the Right Stick to activate the Scope.
- Center the shrine in the Scope.
- Press A to place a pin.
- Open the map and follow the pin to the shrine.
A tower reveals the surrounding map region; it does not automatically mark every shrine. You still need to see, locate, pin, activate, or complete each shrine yourself.
Unlock the Shrine Sensor
The Shrine Sensor is the best in-game tool for finding a shrine that is nearby but hidden. The practical unlock route is:
- Complete Camera Work in the Depths to obtain the Camera.
- Continue Robbie and Josha’s Depths research.
- Complete or advance A Mystery in the Depths and obtain Autobuild.
- Progress until Robbie moves to the Hateno Ancient Tech Lab.
- Start Hateno Village Research Lab.
- Follow the research objective to Mayahisik Shrine in Retsam Forest Cave.
- Return to Robbie to complete the calibration and unlock the Shrine Sensor.
The exact point at which the objectives become available can vary with story and side-adventure progress. See the Shrine Sensor walkthrough and the Hateno Village Research Lab guide if Robbie is not at the expected location.

What the shrine icons mean
The in-game map distinguishes discovery, activation, and completion. Colors can be difficult to separate at different brightness levels or zoom levels, so use this as a practical key:
| Map appearance | Meaning | What remains |
|---|---|---|
| Orange outline and orange center | Found or visited, but not activated | Enter and activate it as a travel point |
| Blue outline with orange center | Activated but not completed | Finish the shrine’s interior challenge |
| Blue outline and blue center | Completed | No Light of Blessing remains; check for an optional chest if needed |
| Chest marker beside the shrine name | All available shrine chests have been collected, according to the map icon key | No shrine chest remains at that location |
This distinction matters when using an interactive map. Seeing a shrine from a tower and placing a pin is not the same as activating it, and activating it is not the same as completing it.
Shrine types and what to expect inside
Every shrine awards one Light of Blessing when completed, but the challenge format varies:
| Type | Practical meaning |
|---|---|
| Puzzle | Link uses abilities, physics, devices, combat tools, or the environment to reach the altar. |
| Combat Training | A tutorial-style shrine teaches a particular combat technique. |
| Proving Grounds | Link enters without his normal equipment and must use weapons and materials supplied inside. |
| Rauru’s Blessing | The main challenge was outside the shrine; the interior is generally a short reward room. |
One secondary database classifies the 152 shrines as 79 Puzzle, 7 Combat Training, 15 Proving Grounds, and 51 Rauru’s Blessing shrines. Treat those numbers as Zelda Central’s database classification, not as an official Nintendo breakdown.
Shrines that are easy to miss
If a marker is on your map but the shrine is not visible, check these access patterns before assuming the map is inaccurate:
- Caves: Search for the entrance rather than digging directly below the marker. Otak Shrine is inside Icefall Foothills Cave.
- Wells and chasms: A Surface shrine can be below ordinary ground level or reached through an opening some distance from the pin.
- Green crystals: Follow the crystal’s beam or trail and carry it back to the shrine pedestal.
- Labyrinths: Surface, Sky, and associated routes can have separate objectives. Siyamotsus and Tenbez are Sky labyrinth examples.
- Diving and timed trials: Taunhiy, Simosiwak, and Sihajog require challenge routes rather than a normal walk to a shrine door.
- Light-and-mirror puzzles: Ga-ahisas and Mayasiar require redirecting light through the surrounding island puzzle.
- Sky orbs: Jirutagumac is hidden inside a large floating orb.
- Yiga challenges: Suariwak Shrine is inside the Yiga Blademaster Station and requires the relevant Yiga access route.
- Special overworld tasks: Ishokin Shrine involves a giant horse, while other shrines use riddles, alignment puzzles, enemy encounters, or environmental conditions.
- Story or side-adventure progression: Regional progression can make access easier or reveal the route, even though shrines are not permanently missable.
For these locations, turn on the map’s cave, quest, crystal, labyrinth, and challenge markers instead of using the shrine layer alone. The recurring access patterns are also catalogued in GameSpot’s shrine guide.
Use Lightroots to find a missing Surface shrine
The fastest late-game cross-check is to compare the Depths and Surface maps. Nintendo specifically recommends using Lightroots to infer Surface shrine positions.
- Open the Depths map and find a Lightroot you have activated.
- Switch to the Surface map while keeping the same horizontal position in view.
- Inspect the corresponding area for a Surface shrine.
- If there is no shrine, check caves, cliffs, wells, chasms, overhangs, and nearby underground entrances.
- Check the Sky layer separately; a Lightroot comparison cannot find one of the 32 Sky shrines.
Surface shrine and Lightroot positions generally correspond, often making a Lightroot an excellent reverse shrine map. It is a practical rule, not an absolute geometric guarantee: documented exceptions include Turakawak Shrine. If the markers are close but not perfectly aligned, inspect the terrain instead of treating the coordinate as proof that the shrine is absent. See Nintendo’s advanced tips and the Shrine of Light reference.
A reliable missing-shrine workflow
When your count is short, use these checks in order:
- Confirm the target number: the completed total is 152, divided into 120 Surface and 32 Sky.
- Check the in-game map state: a blue-outline/orange-center icon is activated but unfinished; an orange icon may only be discovered or visited.
- Audit the Sky separately: look for high-Z coordinates, diving islands, sky labyrinths, sky orbs, and long island chains.
- Activate the Shrine Sensor: set it to Shrines, move around, and follow the change in beeping.
- Search vertically: look above and below Link, especially beneath cliffs, inside caves, and around wells or chasms.
- Compare Lightroots: use activated Lightroots to identify likely Surface shrine positions, while allowing for small offsets and exceptions.
- Check external objectives: inspect green crystals, time trials, labyrinths, mirror puzzles, Yiga challenges, riddles, and enemy encounters.
- Cross-check sources: compare the shrine’s exact name and map layer in the interactive map, the complete checklist, and an individual walkthrough.
Why the Shrine Sensor may not beep
- It may be set to detect a Compendium entry instead of shrines.
- Link may be standing still; move through the area and watch the signal.
- The shrine may be on a different vertical level.
- The shrine may be inside a cave, well, chasm, or ruin, with the entrance some distance away.
- The marker may be on the Sky layer rather than the Surface.
- Robbie’s Hateno Village Research Lab sequence may not be complete.
If the quest progression appears stuck, update the game, reload a previous save, and retry the relevant trigger. Nintendo’s update history records fixes for progression problems involving A Mystery in the Depths, Hateno Village Research Lab, and several shrine-related quests.
What do you get for completing all 152 shrines?
Completing every shrine triggers The Shrine Explorer and leads to the Ancient Hero’s Aspect at the Temple of Time on the Great Sky Island. The reward is separate from the optional treasure chest in each shrine.
Each completed shrine also gives one Light of Blessing. At a Goddess Statue, four Lights can be exchanged for either one Heart Container or one Stamina Vessel. Nintendo explains this four-for-one exchange in its official shrine tips.
All 152 shrines contribute to the post-game map completion percentage, but shrines are not the entire 100% target. The percentage also includes discoveries such as Lightroots, Koroks, caves, chasms, towers, and named locations. Completing every shrine does not by itself produce 100% map completion; see the full TOTK completion checklist for the broader target.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are there shrines in the Depths?
No. TOTK has no Shrines of Light in the Depths. The Depths contain Lightroots, which usually correspond to Surface shrine locations and are useful for finding missing Surface shrines.
How many shrines are in the Sky?
There are 32 Sky shrines. The other 120 are on the Surface, for 152 total.
Do Surface shrines match Lightroots?
Usually, yes. A Lightroot generally corresponds to a Surface shrine in the same horizontal area, but the relationship is a cross-check rather than a perfect rule. Allow for small offsets, terrain, caves, and documented exceptions such as Turakawak Shrine.
What does an orange shrine icon mean?
An orange outline with an orange center indicates a shrine that has been found or visited but not activated. A blue outline with an orange center means it is activated but not completed; a blue outline and blue center indicates completion. Display settings can make these colors difficult to distinguish.
Why is my Shrine Sensor not beeping?
Confirm that the Purah Pad Sensor is set to Shrines, then move through the area. The target may be above or below you, inside a cave or well, or on a different map layer. If the sensor quest has not unlocked, complete the Camera and Depths research sequence, obtain Autobuild, move Robbie to the Hateno Ancient Tech Lab, and complete the Hateno Village Research Lab calibration.
Can a shrine be missed permanently?
No shrine is permanently missable. Some are hidden behind a crystal quest, labyrinth, timed diving challenge, Yiga challenge, environmental puzzle, cave entrance, or story progression, so access may not be immediate.
Do I need to beat the story before completing all shrines?
No. You can complete shrines throughout the game. Some routes are easier after acquiring more abilities, equipment, or regional progression, but the final shrine reward does not require a story completion.
Do shrine chests count toward completing a shrine?
No. Completing the shrine and collecting its Light of Blessing are separate from opening its optional chest. The chest icon on the map indicates that all available treasure in that shrine has been collected.
What is the reward for completing all 152 shrines?
Completing all 152 triggers The Shrine Explorer and leads to the Ancient Hero’s Aspect in the Temple of Time on the Great Sky Island.
Why does my guide list only 150 shrines?
It is probably an older or incompletely updated guide. Some early lists omitted Simosiwak and Siyamotsus or contained stale images and labels. Verify the total against a current interactive map and a second complete list.
Why do shrine coordinates differ between guides?
Guides may record the shrine entrance, a map marker, or the author’s nearby position. Small differences of a few coordinate units are normal. Compare the exact shrine name, the X/Y/Z order, and the Surface or Sky layer before treating a coordinate as wrong.
Recommended Free Tools
Does the Switch 2 Edition change the shrine count?
No. The Switch 2 Edition still has 152 shrines: 120 Surface and 32 Sky.
Can ZELDA NOTES track shrines on the original Switch?
No. ZELDA NOTES is a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition feature. It can show shrine progress and offer voice navigation on Switch 2, but it is not available on the original Nintendo Switch version.
The Bottom Line
For a complete shrine hunt, count 120 Surface shrines and 32 Sky shrines—never look for a shrine in the Depths. Use the interactive map for names, layers, coordinates, caves, and quests; use the Shrine Sensor for nearby hidden entrances; and use Lightroots as a reverse map for missing Surface shrines. When all 152 are complete, The Shrine Explorer leads to the Ancient Hero’s Aspect.
