The short answer, with the official wording
IO Interactive answers the question directly in its official FAQ. Under “Will there be an online or multiplayer experience?”, the studio says: “We are fully committed to building the best experience possible for 007 First Light and that does not include a multiplayer experience.” The statement is attributed to IO Interactive rather than to a named developer or executive.

That wording covers multiplayer as a category, not merely one particular mode. There is no separate co-op announcement that would override it. The official Steam listing also classifies the game as single-player, while the PlayStation game page presents it as a single-player title.
What is and is not available

“Not announced” is the careful description for individual features such as split-screen and cross-play. IO Interactive’s broader answer is stronger: its stated plan does not include a multiplayer experience. Unless the studio changes that plan and updates its official information, buyers should treat 007 First Light as a solo-only game.

Why the co-op answer follows from the multiplayer answer
Online co-op
Co-op is a form of multiplayer, whether it means two players progressing through a campaign together or a group completing missions cooperatively. Because IO Interactive says the game will not include a multiplayer experience, there is no supported online co-op mode in the announced design. You should not expect matchmaking, friend invites, shared mission progress, or a second playable agent unless a future official announcement changes the position.
Local co-op and split-screen
The FAQ does not carve out an exception for local play. No cited official page advertises split-screen, same-console co-op, or a second controller mode. A game can theoretically support local multiplayer without online services, but that is not what the current information says here. The single-player labels on the Steam and PlayStation pages reinforce that the listed product is for one player.
Cross-play and shared progression
Cross-play only matters when multiple players can enter the same session, and shared progression likewise requires a multiplayer structure. Neither feature is described in the official material. Do not read the simultaneous release across several platforms as evidence of cross-play; platform availability and multiplayer networking are separate decisions.

What kind of game is being offered instead?
The Steam description identifies 007 First Light as an espionage action-adventure game and marks it single-player. That gives the clearest high-level expectation: the experience is built around one player taking the role of the game’s protagonist rather than coordinating a team of human players.
“Single-player” does not by itself specify every campaign system. It does not tell you whether missions are linear or open-ended, how long the story is, or whether companions appear as non-player characters. Those details should not be mistaken for co-op simply because another character may be present on screen. A scripted ally, an AI-controlled partner, or a story contact is still part of a solo game unless another human can control that character through an announced multiplayer mode.
The same distinction applies to online requirements. A single-player game can have optional account features, patches, or downloadable content without becoming a multiplayer title. The official answer concerns the absence of a multiplayer experience; it does not establish every possible offline or online technical requirement.

Platforms and release timing
IO Interactive’s FAQ lists the following platform plans. Release timing and store availability can change, and regional storefronts may show different editions or dates, so check the relevant store before purchase.

The dates are launch plans, not evidence of a multiplayer rollout. A version arriving later on another platform does not imply that co-op will be added there. If multiplayer ever becomes part of the product, the developer would need to describe that change separately.
Developer, publisher, and edition information
IO Interactive says it is developing and self-publishing the game in partnership with Amazon MGM Studios. That relationship does not change the player-count information: the same official FAQ that names the partnership states that the planned experience excludes multiplayer.

The FAQ also says a Specialist Edition is available through Amazon.com. Edition names and stock can change, and the listing for a particular platform may differ from another region’s store. Treat the edition as a way of buying the single-player game, not as an indication that it contains a bonus co-op campaign or multiplayer access; no such feature is identified in the official information.
How to verify the status when you are ready to buy
If you are deciding whether the game fits a group of friends, use the following checks rather than relying on a retailer’s generic feature icons:
- Read the current FAQ. Open IO Interactive’s 007 First Light FAQ and look for the question about an online or multiplayer experience. This is the developer’s own statement and should take priority over speculation.
- Check the platform’s player label. On PC, the Steam page identifies the game as single-player. On PlayStation, review the features shown on the official game page.
- Inspect the edition description. Look for explicit wording such as “online co-op,” “multiplayer,” or a player count. A deluxe name, a physical bonus, or a soundtrack does not imply an additional player mode.
- Check for a dated developer update. If IO Interactive changes its plan after launch, the authoritative confirmation should come from its own site or a platform listing updated by the publisher. Treat forum posts, retailer guesses, and social-media rumors as unconfirmed until then.
Common misunderstandings about a solo 007 game
“Could a friend join for just one mission?”
There is no announced drop-in or drop-out system. The official description gives no indication that a second player can temporarily control a partner, so do not buy on the assumption that occasional guest play will be available.
“Does playing on different consoles make it multiplayer?”
No. A multi-platform release means the game is offered on more than one system. It does not mean players on those systems share a world or can complete missions together. The listed platforms are distribution choices, while the single-player designation describes how the game itself is played.
“Could an AI companion count as co-op?”
No. Co-op requires another human participant. An AI-controlled ally, a mission contact, or a temporary story companion can exist within a solo campaign without changing the player count. The official pages do not provide enough detail to identify which companion systems, if any, the game will use.
“Could multiplayer arrive after release?”
Future plans can change for any unreleased game, but there is no announced post-launch multiplayer roadmap in the cited official sources. The responsible expectation is the one IO Interactive has stated: a single-player experience. Reassess only if the developer publishes a clear update.

007 First Light suits players looking for a solo espionage action-adventure and who are comfortable completing the game without a friend controlling another character. It is a poor match for someone whose main requirement is a cooperative Bond-style campaign, local two-player missions, or competitive online play. Those are not listed features, and the developer’s FAQ explicitly excludes a multiplayer experience.
That limitation is not a statement about quality; it is a description of scope. A focused single-player structure can be exactly what a player wants, while a co-op buyer needs a different product. Make the player-count decision before comparing editions, platforms, or release dates.
Bottom line on multiplayer and co-op
As currently described by IO Interactive, 007 First Light is single-player only. The Steam and PlayStation listings support that classification, and no official source announces online co-op, split-screen, competitive multiplayer, or cross-play. If you want to play it, plan for a solo espionage action-adventure on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, or the later Nintendo Switch 2 release window, and check the developer’s FAQ for any future change.
