Its unusual format can get a new group laughing, but launch reviews found that the collection is uneven and loses novelty with repeated play.
What is 1-2-Switch?
1-2-Switch is a local party game for Nintendo Switch, released on 3 March 2017. Nintendo’s official description centers on players facing one another and using Joy-Con features such as HD rumble and motion sensors, rather than focusing on the television screen.

Nintendo Life counted 28 minigames in its 2017 review. Activities include listening for a ball’s position in Ball Count, miming milking a cow in Milk, and reacting to an opponent in Quick Draw. Other examples include Soda Shake, Table Tennis, Eating Contest, Copy Dance, and sword-fighting or sports-themed motion games. Team Battle strings results together by moving teams along a board, as Nintendo’s product page explains.
What do the reviews say?
The strongest appeal is the face-to-face play
Instead of treating the screen as the center of play, many activities ask players to watch each other, listen for cues, and interpret controller feedback. GameSpot’s 2017 review praised the game’s potential to make an entertaining introduction for people who had not played together before, and found some duels engaging. TIME’s 2017 review likewise highlighted how looking at an opponent can draw attention to sound and Joy-Con feedback.

#1 Best Overall
- Meet countless characters from the beloved series
- High-end visuals, modern resolutions and carefully polished gameplay
- Brand new horde mode multiplayer for up to two players, online and splitscreen
The minigames do not all sustain that first impression
Nintendo Life described parts of the collection as undercooked and questioned its long-term appeal. GameSpot also criticized the limited depth and feedback in many activities, saying repetition with the same group can wear down the novelty. GameSpot rated the game 6/10, labeled “Fair.” These are judgments from launch-era reviews, not a guarantee of how every group will respond.
Is 1-2-Switch worth it?
It makes the most sense as a short, social activity for two people who enjoy silly physical gestures, sound-based challenges, and playful competition. Its unusual premise is also a better fit when the players are new to the game or to one another than when the same group expects substantial replay depth.
Rank #2
- Join the party in fun, ridiculous games that use Joy-ConTM controllers or compatible smart devices
- Any group size from 2 to 100 can team up and get moving in certain games—up to 8 in Joy-Con mode or up to 100 in smart device mode
- Games are easy to set up with the help of your horse host Horace
- Get the most wins in Team Contest as you pump up balloons, snap pics with your phone, jot down ice cream orders, and more
- Test your wits (and reaction time and answer quickly Quiz Show and even create your own custom quizzes
- Good fit: You want a face-to-face game for a pair, and the group is happy to perform, react, and laugh at simple challenges.
- Less suitable: You want a story, a progression system, or minigames with enough strategic depth to reward extended repeat play.
- Check before buying: Make sure your console, play mode, and controllers match the setup you intend to use.
How many players can play the original 1-2-Switch?
Nintendo Australia’s regional product listing specifies local play for two players. It lists TV and tabletop modes as supported and handheld mode as unsupported. Nintendo also notes that multiplayer needs one compatible controller per player and that additional controllers may be required; check the listing for your region and console before purchasing.
The same Australian page marks the game as supported on Nintendo Switch 2, while cautioning that Switch Lite compatibility and play experience may differ. These are regional product-page details, so verify the current listing and your intended setup rather than assuming every mode works identically across systems.

- Rated "E10+" w/Mild Violence
Is it the same as Everybody 1-2-Switch!?
No. Everybody 1-2-Switch! is a separate follow-up, not an expanded player mode for the original. Nintendo’s official listing says certain modes in the follow-up support 2–100 players: up to 8 in Joy-Con mode or up to 100 in smart-device mode. Those figures do not apply to the original 1-2-Switch, which Nintendo Australia lists for two local players.
