For a first save, start small: plant the seeds you’re given, water crops when you can, and use the TV and calendar to make each day easier to read. Stardew Valley is an open-ended country-life RPG, so these tips are starting points—not a route you have to follow.
1. Choose a farm for its feel, not a supposed “best” map
Your starting map can shape the first days, but there is no single required choice. Most farm maps begin with 15 Parsnip Seeds; the Meadowlands Farm starts differently, with a coop, two chickens, and 15 Hay instead. Pick the setup that sounds enjoyable rather than worrying about choosing incorrectly. The Getting Started guide describes the starting supplies, and the 1.6 update changelog documents the Meadowlands addition.

2. Plant your Parsnips on day one
If you start with Parsnip Seeds, they make a straightforward first crop. Clear at least 15 tiles, use your hoe to till them, plant the seeds, and water them. The Getting Started guide says the first Parsnips are ready in four days. That gives you an early, simple way to see the planting-and-watering cycle without needing an elaborate farm plan.
3. Water growing crops when you can
Crops generally need water to grow, but missing a watering does not kill them: growth pauses until they are watered again. Your starting watering can handles one tile at a time, and you can refill it at a body of water. A missed day is a delay, not a ruined save.

4. Plan around your energy
Farm chores and other activities use energy, so avoid spending the whole bar without considering what you want to do next. Food can restore energy, and many crops and forage items can be eaten. Check an item’s information first, though: some foods reduce energy instead of restoring it.
5. Go to bed before midnight when you want full recovery
According to the Getting Started guide, sleeping by midnight while you are neither exhausted nor passed out restores Health and Energy fully. Staying up later means waking with less energy. You can choose to push on, but an earlier bedtime can make the next morning more manageable.
6. Check the farmhouse TV
The TV provides weather forecasts, daily luck, recipes, and general tips. Make a habit of checking it when you want a quick clue about the day ahead. A luck forecast is information, not a guarantee that a particular item will drop.
7. Sample activities before settling on a routine
Farming is only one part of Stardew Valley. You can also fish, forage, mine, fight, craft, cook, complete quests, donate to the museum, and work on restoring the Community Center. Try the activities that appeal to you; there is no need to master them all in your first week or pursue one prescribed goal.

8. Talk to villagers as you meet them
Talking and giving gifts build friendship, which can lead to mail, recipes, gifts, and new interactions. Gifts have limits: the guide says you can give one gift per day and two per week. A casual conversation when you pass someone is an easy start; save gifts for when you have a reason to give one.

The calendar can help you think ahead, but you do not need to optimize every crop from the first day. Start with the seeds at hand and learn the watering routine. Before making a larger seasonal plan, check how long a crop takes to grow and whether it will have enough time; crops that go without water pause rather than die.

10. Check controls for your device
Controls vary by platform, so a PC key list may not help if you are playing elsewhere. On PC, the wiki says hotkeys can be reassigned in Options. The official press page describes mobile tap-to-move controls and redesigned menus. Check the controls for your own device, then rebind anything that feels awkward.
