The best Christmas-themed horror games make the holiday part of the fear—not just a snowy backdrop. This list spans killer-toy survival, a Santa-suited slasher, puzzle-driven escapes, shooters and short atmospheric experiences, so you can choose by the kind of scare you want. Game descriptions below draw on Daniel Morris’s December 2024 Destructoid roundup; current prices, availability and platform support should be checked on each game’s store page.
How these games made the list
A game counts as Christmas-themed here when the holiday is central to its premise or horror imagery. A game that merely takes place in winter—or happens to include Christmas in its setting—belongs in a separate holiday-adjacent category. The ten picks below are a varied selection, not an objective quality ranking or a confirmation that every title remains available on Steam.

They also offer different kinds of horror. Some emphasize pursuit and evasion; others rely on gore, puzzles, jump scares, exploration or text. The descriptions reflect the cited roundup rather than measured consensus or independent evaluations.

1. Tattletail
A child receives the titular toy for Christmas, then has to keep it fed, groomed and charged while avoiding Mama Tattletail. That care routine gives the game its distinctive tension: looking after a noisy toy can expose you to danger. Pick it for killer-toy horror and pursuit rather than a conventional haunted-house story.

2. Christmas Massacre
This stealth slasher puts Larry in a Santa suit and has him take direction from a talking Christmas tree as he kills. The retro-styled presentation and gory slasher premise make it a markedly more violent choice than the walking simulators on this list. It is for players seeking active stealth-and-slash gameplay, not gentle seasonal spookiness.
3. September 7th
The title does not sound seasonal, but the premise is: receiving a Christmas Elf as a gift leads to strange events at home. Destructoid describes it as a very short walking simulator, making it a straightforward option if you want a compact, story-led scare rather than a longer survival challenge.
4. Crimson Snow
On Christmas night, a character and his girlfriend face an intruder, and the player’s actions affect whether both survive. The roundup notes multiple endings, giving the survival scenario more than one possible outcome. Choose it for a holiday-night threat and decisions with consequences for the characters.

5. Irony of Nightmare
An uninvited guest turns a survival scenario into a puzzle-solving escape. The puzzles are central to getting away, so this is a better fit for players who want to work through obstacles than for those looking mainly for a shooter or slasher. The roundup does not establish a runtime or ending count.
6. Christmas Nightmare
This holiday survival scenario leans on jump scares. Destructoid estimates a playtime of about one hour; treat that as the roundup’s estimate, not a guaranteed completion time. It may suit someone looking for a short seasonal horror session built around sudden scares.
7. Krampus Kills
For a faster-paced alternative to exploration-led horror, this shooter features Krampus, evil elves and snowmen. Its combat-focused format separates it from the list’s walking simulators and puzzle escapes. Pick it if you want to face holiday monsters directly rather than spend most of the experience avoiding them.

9. Evil Holiday
A short festive horror experience noted for atmosphere and jump scares. The roundup does not give a verified runtime, so consider it a brief-style recommendation rather than a promise about how long it takes to finish.
10. For Goodness Sake

The itch.io Christmas-and-horror category offers a wider pool of tagged games, including Haunted PS1 Madvent Calendar 2020, Reindeer Games, Slay Bells and Santy is Home. Treat the tags as discovery aids, not a verified quality ranking: category labels are user-applied and do not establish that a game is well reviewed or currently maintained.

One more specific example is Christmas Horror by Purple Thunder Games. Its Steam listing gives a December 3, 2021 release date and describes a short first-person game about escaping Santa’s house with scattered items; it says there are two ways to escape. Those details describe the storefront’s presentation, not an independent evaluation of the game.

When a winter game is not Christmas-themed
Some recommendation lists widen the category to include games with snowy environments or holiday-season timing. For example, Befenn’s 2023 Christmas horror article includes Christmas Massacre and Cthulhu Saves Christmas alongside holiday-adjacent picks such as Until Dawn and Parasite Eve. Those can still make good seasonal plays, but a winter setting or nearby holiday context is not the same as a premise built around Christmas.
If you want explicitly Christmas-themed horror, start with the ten games above. If your real goal is simply an unsettling winter game to play during the holidays, broaden the search—but label those picks as winter-set or holiday-adjacent rather than Christmas horror.
