Which kind of co-op RPG suits your group?
For story, decisions, and shared role-playing
Baldur’s Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin 2 suit groups that want to shape a campaign through character choices and problem-solving rather than simply meet for a series of fights. In Baldur’s Gate 3, Larian’s FAQ confirms online play for four and PC split-screen; it also says split-screen is unavailable on Steam Deck. Larian describes direct connections between Steam and GOG on PC and Mac, but that does not establish general cross-platform play. Divinity: Original Sin 2 is the other choice-led option here, with room for player experimentation in combat and consequential decisions.
For action, boss fights, and loot
Diablo 4 is the loot-and-build choice, while Monster Hunter Rise centers the group on taking down monsters with different weapons and learning encounters together. For a smaller online team drawn to survival-tinged action and cooperative bosses, consider Remnant: From the Ashes. Granblue Fantasy: Relink is another online action option, organized around fantasy quests and battles.

For the King is a fit for friends who enjoy taking turns over tactical choices and starting new runs; its generated maps, quests, and loot give the adventure a replayable structure. For a more continuous local journey, Sea of Stars includes co-op across exploration, traversal, and combat—not just battles.
For a slower pace or a world to return to
Stardew Valley makes shared farm life the focus, a gentler alternative to combat-led campaigns. Final Fantasy 14 is the pick for groups seeking an ongoing online world and social play, with story dungeons and later raids rather than one finite co-op campaign.

Check platform compatibility before buying
The co-op mode and player limit can vary by platform or edition. The reported features above do not establish that every version supports the same modes, or that players on different systems can join one another. This matters especially for Stardew Valley, where the roundup reports different maximum player counts for console and PC, and for any group considering cross-play.
- Confirm the exact platform and edition each person plans to play, then check its current store listing for local or online multiplayer and the player limit.
- If friends use different systems, verify cross-play for that exact platform combination; do not infer it from a general multiplayer listing.
