1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor families looking for games to play together, this Nintendo Switch shortlist spans racing, co-op adventures, party games, puzzles and creative play. The ranking weighs how readily different ages and skill levels can join in, how the games support family play, and what parents should know about content and online features. It is an editorial selection, not an objectively definitive top ten: the right choice depends on your family’s ages, interests and appetite for competition.
“Family-friendly” does not mean identical for every household. Check each game’s rating and descriptors, player setup, online options and purchase features before deciding.

How to choose a family game
Start with who will play and how. A game may suit a household as a shared activity even if it is challenging, competitive or better for older children than younger ones. Before buying, consider:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Age and content: Read the rating and descriptors, and consider whether fantasy violence, ghosts, lyrics or other themes fit your family.
- Play style: Decide whether you want to cooperate, compete, take turns, or build and create at your own pace.
- Players and setup: Local multiplayer, wireless play and online play are different configurations. Check the number of systems and controllers needed; Nintendo notes that extra games, systems or accessories may be required for multiplayer.
- Online interaction: Look into account settings and who can interact with players online, especially for children.
Nintendo’s family game guide groups recommendations into multiplayer adventures, party games, two-player co-op and creative games. That is a useful way to find a fit, but it is a discovery guide rather than a neutral comparison.

The 10 best family video games for Nintendo Switch
1. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe — best all-around family competition
Easy-to-understand racing makes this a strong starting point for mixed-age groups, while optional driving assists can help less experienced players stay in the race. Nintendo advertises local wireless play with up to eight friends; Nintendo Life describes up to four players on a single Switch. Those are different setups, not one eight-player single-console mode. See Nintendo’s family guide and Nintendo Life’s family-game coverage for those details. Nintendo lists the game as Everyone with Comic Mischief in its parent guide by genre. For a straightforward group race, it is the best first pick on this list.
2. Kirby’s Return to Dream Land Deluxe — best cooperative adventure for a group
Nintendo highlights this Kirby adventure as family fun for up to four players in its family guide. Its appeal here is the shared adventure rather than head-to-head competition, making it a good alternative when the group would rather progress together than race for first place. Check the game’s rating and local multiplayer requirements for your setup before playing.
3. Nintendo Switch Sports — best motion-controlled party game
Nintendo includes Nintendo Switch Sports among its family recommendations. Its sports-and-party format makes it a natural choice when the activity itself matters as much as winning. As with any motion-controlled game, make sure players have enough space to move safely and verify the controllers and player setup required for the specific sport and number of participants. Nintendo’s guide is the source for its inclusion.

Nintendo classifies Mario Party titles as party games and lists Mario Party Superstars as Everyone with Mild Cartoon Violence in its parent genre guide. The board-game structure and mini-games suit groups that enjoy changing activities and a competitive edge. If your family prefers low-pressure collaboration, a co-op adventure may be a better match.
5. Animal Crossing: New Horizons — best for relaxed, creative play
This slower island-life simulation is a calmer choice than racing or party games. Nintendo describes it as starting a new life on a deserted island and lists it as Everyone with Comic Mischief in its parent guide. It is a good fit for players who like decorating, collecting and setting their own goals, rather than needing a fast-paced shared challenge. See Nintendo’s family guide for its recommendation.
Rank #2
- A new Spin on a Classic: You've never played classic Sonic like this before!
- Multiply, swim up waterfalls, change form, and more with the powers of the Chaos Emeralds.
- lay as Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy Rose, using their unique abilities to explore and uncover new paths and secrets.
- More Friends, More Fun: Play with up to 3 other players in local Co-op and challenge players from around the world in Battle Mode!
6. Minecraft — best for open-ended building and exploration
Minecraft can be a creative building game or a survival adventure, depending on the mode. In its parent guide, Mojang explains that Creative focuses on building, while Survival includes health and hunger mechanics; it also notes mild violence, including fighting creatures and, in multiplayer, other players. ESRB rates it E10+ for Fantasy Violence and flags Users Interact and In-Game Purchases on its rating page.
For child accounts, multiplayer is off by default in Java and Bedrock, according to Mojang’s guide. Parents should review account settings and online access before enabling multiplayer. The game can support both solo and shared play, but the mode and online setup change the experience substantially.
7. Super Mario Maker 2 — best for making and sharing courses
Rather than just playing through levels, family members can build courses and hand them over for someone else to try. Nintendo Life describes course creation and sharing as a central feature in its family-game guide. It works especially well when players enjoy designing, testing and revising together; parents should check online sharing and interaction features if children will use them.
8. Puyo Puyo Tetris — best family puzzle challenge
This combines two recognizable puzzle formats, letting players choose Puyo Puyo or Tetris. Nintendo Life describes four-player Tetris and the choice between the two modes in its coverage. It is a good fit for families who want a competitive game built around quick decisions rather than sports or platforming.
9. New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe — best side-scrolling group adventure
Nintendo says this game includes 164 courses and supports up to four players in its family guide. It offers a substantial set of levels for families who want to play through a shared platforming adventure. The number of players refers to the game’s supported play; confirm the controllers and setup needed for your group.
Rank #3
- True to the Original
- Striking Art Direction and Score
- Respectful Representation
- Officially Licensed & Supported
- Deluxe Edition Content: Full game, Cowboys & Critters DLC, 3 art cards, Reversible coversheet
10. Luigi’s Mansion 3 — best for two-player co-op
Nintendo lists Luigi’s Mansion 3 among games with co-op for two players in its family guide. Its ghostly setting gives it a different tone from the brighter picks above, so check the rating and content details against the ages and comfort level of your players before choosing it.
Ratings and multiplayer need a closer look
Ratings provide a useful first screen, but they do not answer every household question. Nintendo’s parent genre guide lists examples such as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Animal Crossing: New Horizons as Everyone with Comic Mischief, and Mario Party Superstars as Everyone with Mild Cartoon Violence. Minecraft has a different rating and online/purchase flags: its ESRB entry is E10+ with Fantasy Violence, Users Interact and In-Game Purchases.
For Minecraft specifically, Mojang’s parent guide recommends PEGI 7 and ESRB Everyone 10+, describes mild violence, and explains that multiplayer is off by default on child accounts. A mode that emphasizes building is not the same experience as survival play, and private family play is not the same as open online interaction.
Pick by the kind of family play you want
- For a quick, familiar competition: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe or Mario Party Superstars.
- For teamwork: Kirby’s Return to Dream Land Deluxe, New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe or Luigi’s Mansion 3.
- For a relaxed pace: Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
- For making things: Minecraft in Creative mode or Super Mario Maker 2.
- For puzzles or party movement: Puyo Puyo Tetris or Nintendo Switch Sports.
These recommendations are for Nintendo Switch, the platform best represented by the named sources here; they are not a cross-platform ranking. A household’s best choice depends on ages, interests, the desired balance of cooperation and competition, and the actual local or online setup available.
