For direct kaiju combat, Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee is the strongest place to start. This subjective ranking favors games that capture the thrill of controlling giant monsters, while also making room for city destruction, portable play, retro history, and strategy. There is no consistent cross-title score set here, so the order reflects how well each game serves its particular version of the Godzilla fantasy—not a consensus ranking.

How these Godzilla games differ

Godzilla games have taken several routes to the same central appeal: playing as a colossal monster. Some turn that into head-to-head arena combat; others focus on wrecking environments, retro action, or strategy. The right pick depends on which part of the fantasy matters most to you.

  • For monster-versus-monster fighting: start with Destroy All Monsters Melee or Save the Earth.
  • For faction conflict and a wide roster: consider Unleashed, while keeping its Wii controls in mind.
  • For destruction over conventional fighting: try Godzilla (2014 in Japan, 2015 in the West).
  • For portable or historical variety: look to Domination!, Monster of Monsters, or Giant Monster March.
  • For a different genre: Godzilla Battle Line is a strategy game, not a console brawler.

The 10 best Godzilla games, ranked

1. Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee (2002)

Platforms: GameCube and Xbox. This is the best starting point for the straightforward kaiju-fighting fantasy: monsters square off in arenas where the environment contributes to the spectacle. Its direct arena-brawler format gives the series a clear identity, and its announced remaster makes the original especially relevant to readers deciding whether to revisit the game or wait for the updated version.

Best for: Players who want Godzilla and other monsters in direct, destructive combat.

#1 Best Overall
Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee Remastered - Nintendo Switch 2
  • The original 2002 Godzilla arena fighter, remastered
  • 12 kaiju to choose from, each with a uniquely vicious move set
  • 8 locations, including real-world cities, Monster Island, and the Alien Mothership. Gallery items to unlock
  • play with friends in local co-op and all-new online multiplayer. Remastered graphics enhance the cinematic experience of the original
  • improved unlock system gives you the choice to unlock monsters, locations, and gallery items in any order. Also includes additional single-player campaigns for each kaiju

2. Godzilla: Save the Earth (2004)

Platforms: PlayStation 2 and Xbox. A natural follow-up for anyone drawn to Destroy All Monsters Melee, Save the Earth continues the console-brawler approach and offers a substantial kaiju roster. It earns a high spot for how directly it answers the question “which monster would win?” without requiring a different genre or control concept.

Best for: Fans seeking another roster-focused console arena fighter.

3. Godzilla: Unleashed (2007)

Platforms: Wii, PlayStation 2, and Nintendo DS. Unleashed gives the series a broader sense of conflict through its factions and large roster. Polylusion highlights those strengths but also criticizes the precision and fatigue associated with the Wii motion controls; that is one outlet’s assessment, not a universal verdict. The other platform versions offer alternatives for players who would rather avoid motion-based inputs.

Best for: Players who value a broad monster lineup and faction-driven conflict.

Rank #2
Skull Island: Rise of Kong - Nintendo Switch
  • Experience the origins of the orphaned Kong as he metamorphosizes from a young Kong to the fully mature King of Skull Island
  • Unleash the combat fury of Kong to deal devastating combos to dominate the ferocious minions of Gaw and tactically unleash rage mode to heighten the impact of your attacks against the island’s gargantuan subterranean denizens
  • Send your enemies running for the hills as you unleash Kong’s spine-tingling roar and deliver their final coup de grace through unique finishing attacks
  • Discover the Mythos of Skull Island as you unearth collectibles, unlock mysterious areas of the island and learn about the history of the islanders, the exotic flora and fauna and the rich history of the Kongs
  • Ascend Kong to new heights through special events and a variety of boss fights that unlock his full combat potential

4. Godzilla (2014 Japan; 2015 Western release)

Platforms: PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. This is the deliberately divisive pick in the list. Rather than centering on a conventional fighting-game loop, it emphasizes Godzilla’s destructive progress through environments. That shift makes it a better match for players who want to feel like a force of nature than for those seeking the most readable head-to-head combat.

GameSpot lists July 14, 2015 as the game’s first release date and credits Natsume Atari as developer and Bandai Namco Games as publisher. Its page displays a GameSpot score of 3 and Metacritic 38; those figures are not directly comparable with a uniform set of scores for the other games in this ranking.

Best for: Players more interested in destruction and spectacle than a traditional arena fighter.

5. Godzilla: Domination! (2002)

Platform: Game Boy Advance. This portable monster brawler adds useful variety to a franchise list dominated by home consoles. Its place here reflects the value of having a Godzilla fighting game designed for a handheld, rather than a claim that it outclasses the better-known console entries.

Rank #3
Godzilla - PlayStation 4
  • Destruction: Bash your way through each stage to take out the Energy Generator and proceed to the next area. Be sure to smash as many other buildings in the stage as possible to maximize your G-Energy.
  • Movie Style Action: Players can choose to view the action with a special Movie-Style Camera Angle System. Choosing this camera angle switches the camera view to special, pre-set locations on the map.
  • Multiple Modes: Mission Mode - Crush your way through over 20 stages of mayhem! Diorama Mode - Build the Godzilla scene of their dreams! King of Monsters Mode - It's a time trial of chaos!
  • Power-Up: Collect G-Energy in each stage to Power-Up your Godzilla! Grow Godzilla from 50 up to 100 Meters tall. Godzilla's defensive and offensive prowess will increase in line with his size.

Best for: Players exploring the series’ handheld history.

6. Godzilla: Monster of Monsters (1988)

Platform: NES. One of the earliest distinctive licensed entries, Monster of Monsters mixes strategic movement across a board-like map with side-scrolling action stages. That hybrid structure is a historical curiosity in a series now often associated with arena combat. Polylusion notes its nostalgic appeal, though that will matter more to some players than others.

Best for: Retro fans interested in an older, less conventional take on the license.

7. Godzilla: Battle Legends (1994)

Platforms: TurboGrafx-16 and Turbo Duo. Battle Legends is a useful window into how the franchise approached fighting games during the 16-bit era. It earns a place for that historical perspective; the available evidence does not support a more detailed comparison of its quality with the other entries here.

Rank #4
PS4 Godzilla VS [Japan Import]
  • Import Game - Japanese Version
  • Compatible with US systems (region free)
  • Japanese language (other languages may be included)
  • Manual and packaging in Japanese language

Best for: Players curious about the series’ early fighting-game design.

8. Godzilla: Giant Monster March (1995)

Platform: Game Gear. This portable-era release broadens the list beyond home-console brawlers. Its clearest value in this ranking is historical: it represents another handheld interpretation of the kaiju license, in a period when portable hardware shaped what a monster game could be.

Best for: Handheld and franchise-history enthusiasts.

9. Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee Remastered (announced 2026; upcoming)

Announced platforms: Steam, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2. Official materials describe an update to the 2002 arena fighter by Atari and original developer Pipeworks, with enhanced visuals and quality-of-life changes. Godzilla.com’s August 28, 2026 announcement says the revealed complete lineup contains 12 kaiju. Nintendo UK lists eight locations, local co-op, new online multiplayer, additional single-player campaigns, and an improved unlock system.

  • Houses renamed FACILITIES, Hotels renamed BASES, Community Chest Cards renamed UNGCC Cards, and Chance Cards renamed GODZILLA TOWER Cards

Atari lists physical and digital editions, a $29.99 price, and a November 3, 2026 physical ship date. Nintendo UK displays 03/11/2026, meaning 3 November 2026 in UK date format. These release and price details are time-sensitive; check the live listings for current availability. Godzilla.com also scheduled a Steam demo for October 15, 2026. Since that date has passed, consult the Steam listing to determine whether the demo is currently available.

The remaster ranks below the original because it is an announced release rather than a game that can be assessed here as a finished product. Its planned online multiplayer is a notable addition to the original’s arena-fighting format. As Atari’s product description puts it: “Face off against your friends in local co-op or new online multiplayer.”

Best for: Players who want the classic arena format on newer systems, once the release is available.

10. Godzilla Battle Line (2021)

Listed platforms: iOS, Android, and PC. Godzilla Battle Line brings a modern strategy counterpoint to a ranking otherwise centered on action and fighting games. It belongs here for broadening what a Godzilla game can be, but it is not a substitute for the direct monster combat found in the console brawlers. Current service status and monetization details are not established here.

Best for: Players looking for a strategy game rather than a kaiju action fighter.
