How to choose a monster-taming game
These games share collecting and building a creature team, but diverge in what happens next. Some emphasize catching and turn-based battles; others ask you to raise, synthesize, fuse, or negotiate with creatures. A few make them companions in survival crafting or frame team building around an online world.

The 10 best monster-taming games, ranked
1. Pokémon Scarlet and Violet — best all-around starting point
Scarlet and Violet make the most natural first recommendation for players who want a contemporary Pokémon RPG built around collecting creatures and exploring a broad world. The Pokémon Company describes Paldea as a large open world and identifies the games as Pokémon RPG chapters developed by GAME FREAK for Nintendo Switch. That familiar foundation gives newcomers an accessible entry point, while the open-world setting distinguishes it from more route-based entries.
Best for: players who want the best-known creature-collecting formula with open-world exploration. Platform: Nintendo Switch.

- Make pacts with monsters to receive their protection in return for shelter
- Breed and fuse over 200 base monsters to create your own new species
- Travel across Crown Island with your monster allies to uncover a dark world
- Play online to battle and trade, and have your new species reach across the globe
2. Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin — best for raising and bonding
This spin-off shifts the emphasis from the main Monster Hunter games’ action-hunting identity toward raising and bonding with monsters in a role-playing adventure. Its battle system is different from Pokémon’s, making it a good choice if you want familiar creature companionship without simply repeating the same combat formula. GameSpot lists a Nintendo Switch version.
Best for: players who want creature raising and a distinct RPG battle structure. Platform: Nintendo Switch version listed by GameSpot; check regional edition and format availability.
3. Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince — best for team builders
The Dark Prince draws on the Dragon Quest Monsters series’ monster-capture roots and gives team-building a prominent role. Its changing seasons affect which monsters appear and what exploration opportunities are available, adding a reason to revisit the world as your collection grows. It suits players who enjoy building a roster as much as progressing through a story.
Best for: players drawn to collecting and combining monsters, with exploration that changes by season.

Digimon Story: Time Stranger is a modern choice for players who want their creature-raising wrapped in a substantial RPG story. Bandai Namco’s official portal lists it as a 2025 raising RPG, and its Steam version is dated October 3, 2025. GamesRadar highlights its team-building, battles, and colorful story. Confirm the platform, edition, and regional availability that apply to you before buying.
Best for: players who want a story-driven Digimon RPG as well as team building and battles.
5. Cassette Beasts — best for transformation and fusion
Cassette Beasts gives creature collection a distinctive hook: transformation and fusion are central to its turn-based experimentation. Rather than treating its roster only as a set of separate companions, it invites players to explore what happens when forms combine. It is a strong pick for fans of the genre looking for an indie game with a clear mechanical twist.
Best for: players who want turn-based battles and a fusion-centered approach to creature collecting.

6. Temtem — best for online competition
Temtem is the recommendation here for players interested in an MMO-style creature-catching game and an online competitive angle. That structure makes it a different proposition from a primarily solo adventure: the appeal is not just filling out a collection, but engaging with a shared online game. Online services and available modes can change, so verify the current experience before choosing it specifically for multiplayer.
Best for: players who prioritize an online world and competitive play.
Rank #2
- Players: 2 to 6
- Ages: 5 Plus
- Playing Time: 30 minutes
7. Palworld — best for survival crafting
Palworld takes creature companionship into open-world survival. Its creatures can contribute to building and resource work as well as combat, so the relationship between player and team extends beyond battles. Its survival-crafting focus and tone set it apart from the more traditional creature-collecting RPGs on this list.
Best for: players who want creature utility, exploration, and survival crafting rather than a conventional Pokémon-like journey.
8. Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance — best for demanding combat
Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance is the pick for players who want a tougher, darker RPG in which interaction with monsters is part of a harsh, apocalyptic setting. Its combat is turn-based, and recruiting creatures involves negotiation: players may bargain with monsters or offer items or money. That gives collection a different feel from simply catching creatures in the field.
Best for: players who value challenging turn-based combat and negotiation over a lighthearted collecting adventure.
9. Coromon — best retro-inspired indie
Coromon aims for a retro monster-taming experience with modern production values. Its studio says the original launched in 2022 and later came to six platforms. The studio’s current page says the next all-platform Coromon Remastered launch date has not been set, so distinguish the available original from that future update rather than assuming the remaster is broadly released.
Best for: players who want an indie take on a more traditional, retro-inspired monster-taming format.

Nexomon: Extinction is a straightforward option for players looking for creature collecting and battling in a colorful style. GameSpot describes it as having roughly 300 monsters; that is the guide’s approximate description, not a verified official count. Its place here reflects its fit for fans seeking a familiar collection-and-battle structure rather than a major genre detour.
Best for: players who want a conventional monster-collecting and battling experience.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which game is closest to Pokémon?
“Closest to Pokémon” is not the same as “best overall.” If you want the most recognizable modern Pokémon experience, Scarlet and Violet is the direct choice. For a more traditional-feeling alternative, Coromon and Nexomon: Extinction are the nearer fits among these recommendations. Choose Palworld for survival crafting instead, or Temtem if online play is the priority; both move further from a conventional solo creature-collecting RPG.
Quick Recap
What to check before buying
- Platform and edition: Confirm the exact version sold in your region, especially for newer releases and titles available on multiple platforms.
- Online requirements: If multiplayer is the reason you are buying, check the game’s current service status and modes rather than relying on an older description.
- Physical versus digital: A listing for a game does not guarantee a physical edition or current stock. GameSpot lists a Switch version of Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin; check format, region, and edition with the retailer.
- Updates and remasters: Coromon’s original and its undated all-platform Remastered update are distinct; do not treat the latter as already available.
