Looking for an apocalypse without another trip through the wasteland of Fallout? These ten games take the end of the world in very different directions: tense survival stories, tactical role-playing, open-world exploration, vehicle combat and anomaly-filled driving. The list is curated by the kind of experience each game offers, not ranked by a shared score.

How to choose a post-apocalyptic game

The setting alone doesn’t tell you how a game plays. Some of these are tightly focused, story-led adventures; others prioritize exploration, tactical combat or survival systems. Use the play style and mood below to find the right starting point. Platform and edition availability can vary by region, so check the relevant local storefront before buying.

Ten post-apocalyptic games beyond Fallout

1. The Last of Us — for tense, character-led survival

The Last of Us puts a human story at the center of a fungal infection apocalypse. Its encounters mix stealth, infected enemies, firearms, modified melee weapons and crafting. Choose it if you want carefully staged action and emotional storytelling rather than a broad role-playing sandbox. PlayStation’s editorial guide also covers the two-perspective structure of The Last of Us Part II Remastered; the recommendation here is for the series, not a claim that every edition plays identically.

2. Metro Exodus — for a bleak first-person journey

Metro Exodus is a first-person shooter set in a harsh nuclear aftermath. Survivors have been driven underground by radiation, while mutants and other dangers make the surface hostile. Its journey through that world suits players who want a grim atmosphere and direct first-person combat. Deep Silver classifies the Metro franchise as post-apocalyptic and identifies Metro Exodus as an FPS.

Fallout 4 Game of The Year Edition - PlayStation 4
  • Freedom and Liberty Do whatever you want in a massive open world with hundreds of locations, characters, and quests. Join multiple factions vying for power or go it alone, the choices are all yours
  • Be whoever you want with the special character system. From a power Armored soldier to the charismatic smooth talker, you can choose from hundreds of perks and develop your own playstyle
  • New next generation graphics and lighting engine brings to life the world of fallout. From the blasted forests of the common wealth to the ruins of Boston, every location is packed with dynamic detail
  • Intense first or third person combat can also be slowed down with the new dynamic Vault Tec Assisted Targeting System (V.A.T.S) that lets you choose your attacks and enjoy cinematic carnage

3. Horizon Zero Dawn — for far-future exploration

Horizon Zero Dawn is the pick for exploring a world reshaped long after civilization’s collapse, where machine life dominates the landscape. Its appeal is discovery and a striking science-fiction setting rather than a conventional ruined-city apocalypse. PlayStation’s description of the sequel, Horizon Forbidden West, provides series context: a post-apocalyptic open world, robotic beasts, dangerous storms and humanity struggling to survive. The game recommended here is Horizon Zero Dawn, not its sequel.

4. Days Gone — for motorcycle travel and massive hordes

In Days Gone, bounty hunter Deacon St. John crosses a post-apocalyptic Pacific Northwest threatened by Freaker hordes and human gangs. The open world and motorcycle give the game a different rhythm from the more confined survival stories on this list. PlayStation’s Australia page describes Days Gone Remastered as a PS5 edition that includes Horde Assault mode; check your regional store for current edition and platform details.

5. Mad Max — for wasteland driving and vehicle combat

Mad Max is built around a sun-blasted wasteland and the Magnum Opus, a car you upgrade as vehicle combat becomes a central part of the experience. The game departs from the plot of Mad Max: Fury Road, so it is better approached as its own wasteland adventure than as a retelling of the film. PCGamesN describes its vehicle combat and upgrades, while GOG’s post-apocalyptic catalogue lists the game in that genre.

6. Wasteland 3 — for tactical role-playing

If what you most want from a Fallout alternative is role-playing choice rather than first-person action, try Wasteland 3. It uses a top-down, turn-based approach and a deep RPG system, making tactical decisions the focus of encounters. It is a more direct fit for players who enjoy planning their moves than for those looking primarily for a shooter. PCGamesN discusses the series’ tactical, turn-based roots.

7. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. — for hostile zones and oppressive atmosphere

The S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games suit players drawn to hazardous environments, anomalies and a tense, oppressive atmosphere. The series offers a different flavor of post-apocalyptic survival from either Fallout’s role-playing sandbox or Metro’s focused first-person journey. GOG’s genre catalogue places entries in the broader post-apocalyptic field. Check the local storefront for the specific game’s current platform and edition; availability differs across releases.

8. Dying Light — for parkour in an infected city

Dying Light is the choice if you want to move through an infected world with parkour as a defining part of the experience. It adds a physical, traversal-focused feel to the familiar threat of a post-apocalyptic outbreak. GOG lists Dying Light: Definitive Edition in its genre catalogue, but platform and edition availability should be confirmed with the storefront for your region.

9. The Walking Dead: The Telltale Definitive Series — for decisions and relationships

Choose The Walking Dead: The Telltale Definitive Series for character relationships and consequential decisions, not combat-heavy survival. PlayStation describes it as an episodic game based on Robert Kirkman’s comic series. The collection includes all four seasons, 400 Days and The Walking Dead: Michonne. It is a strong alternative when you want the emotional stakes of an apocalypse without making combat the main attraction.

10. Pacific Drive — for experimental survival driving

Pacific Drive turns a station wagon into your tool for surviving the Olympic Exclusion Zone. Drive through anomalies, scavenge supplies and improve the car at a garage; the game emphasizes systems, experimentation and freedom. It is the most distinct driving-survival loop here: less about vehicle combat than Mad Max, and more about managing a dangerous trip through an unpredictable place. PlayStation’s editorial guide describes its anomaly-focused, systems-driven play.
