The PlayStation 2’s fighting-game library spans precision-focused 3D duels, 2D crossovers, and more. This ranking weighs combat style, depth and accessibility, solo content, roster and customization, and documented critical reception—not a single review score. It is an editorial selection, not a universal consensus: the available evidence is stronger for some contenders than others.
How this ranking works
These picks are conventional fighting games rather than wrestling games or beat ’em ups. The order balances how each game distinguishes itself in combat, how much it offers beyond versus matches, and the strength of the available evidence. Where detailed comparative reviews or scores were not available, the placement is an editorial choice, not a claim of measured superiority.

The 10 best PS2 fighting games
-
Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution
The strongest all-round pick here: a technically demanding 3D fighter that contemporary reviews also described as approachable and entertaining. GameSpot’s Greg Kasavin wrote, “This highly technical, complex yet accessible, genuinely entertaining fighting game should belong to anyone with any interest in the genre.” The review notes a selectable roster of 15, including two new characters, and an expanded main single-player mode. A 2003 PS2 retrospective from GamesRadar also singles out its Quest mode and substantial solo content. GameSpot review; GamesRadar’s PS2 retrospective.

Tekken 5
A major 3D-fighting contender with a large roster, character customization, and three earlier Tekken games included as extras. Metacritic’s PS2 listing reports an 88 Metascore from 62 critic reviews; the page was accessed in 2026, so this is a current aggregate rather than a timeless measure of quality. The extras make it especially attractive to players interested in the series’ history as well as its latest entry at the time. Metacritic’s PS2 listing.
#1 Best Overall
Mortal Kombat Armageddon - PlayStation 2- Mortal Kombat: Armageddon PS2
-
Capcom vs. SNK 2: Mark of the Millennium
The essential 2D alternative in a list otherwise led by 3D fighters. It brings characters from Capcom and SNK games together and builds its appeal around a cross-company cast, varied mechanics, moves, backgrounds, and music. GameSpot characterized it as one of the best 2D fighters available. Its distinct format and breadth of source characters give the PS2 library a different kind of matchup than the arena-like movement of the 3D entries. GameSpot review.
-
Mortal Kombat: Deception
A mode-rich pick for players who want more than standard matches. The PS2 review coverage highlights extra modes, unlockables, additional characters and moves, and online play. The qualification matters: the same reception includes criticism of Konquest mode as poorly implemented or chore-like. Its quantity of side content is a strength, but not every mode is equally successful. Metacritic’s PS2 review page.
Rank #2
Soul Calibur 2- 13 historic fighters
- 7 exciting modes of play
- Collect 200 different weapons
- Battle your way up the ranks as you follow the fascinating storylines of each character
-
Soulcalibur II
A notable PS2-era 3D fighter and a clear eligible candidate from the platform’s fighting-game library. The available library listing confirms its genre and PS2 placement, but does not establish a detailed comparative case for ranking it above the entries with stronger review evidence here. Its position reflects its importance among the field, with that evidence limitation kept in view. MobyGames’ PS2 fighting-game listings.

Tekken Tag Tournament
Another key PS2 3D-fighting option, confirmed in the platform library as a fighting game. It belongs in a retrospective shortlist alongside Tekken 5 and Tekken 4, though the source material available here does not provide detailed reviews or comparative mode and balance claims for it. MobyGames’ PS2 fighting-game listings.
Rank #3
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas - PlayStation 2- Five years ago Carl Johnson escaped from the pressures of life in Los Santos, San Andreas... a city tearing itself apart with gang trouble, drugs and corruption. Where filmstars and millionaires do their best to avoid the dealers and gangbangers.
- Now, it's the early 90s. Carl's got to go home. His mother has been murdered, his family has fallen apart and his childhood friends are all heading towards disaster.
- On his return to the neighborhood, a couple of corrupt cops frame him for homicide. CJ is forced on a journey that takes him across the entire state of San Andreas, to save his family and to take control of the streets.
-
Virtua Fighter 4
The predecessor to Evolution and a distinct PS2 fighting-game release in its own right. The platform library confirms its eligibility; the stronger specific evidence in this ranking concerns Evolution’s expanded roster and solo content. This entry earns a place for readers considering the series’ PS2 offerings, without assuming the evidence for the later edition applies in every detail to the earlier one. MobyGames’ PS2 fighting-game listings.
-
Soulcalibur III
A further Soulcalibur entry in the PS2 fighting-game field. The library reference supports its inclusion as a fighter, but the evidence available here does not support specific claims about its modes, balance, or superiority to Soulcalibur II. It is a reasonable series choice for a list representing the breadth of the platform’s 3D fighters. MobyGames’ PS2 fighting-game listings.
Rank #4
WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2010 - PlayStation 2 (Renewed)- Go to the mat online with multiplayer action on Ethernet equipped PlayStation 2 models.
- Create your own WWE storylines with WWE Story Designer, as you choose Superstars, cutscenes, match-ups and camera angles. It's your script, your rules.
- Make the action in the squared circle your own with New Create-a-Finisher functionality that allows you to create your own high-flying finishing moves.
- A new and improved Road to WrestleMania mode. The popular story-based mode returns with key updates and new storylines, including a first-ever Divas storyline and a Create-a-Superstar storyline.
- Select from a huge roster of 60 wrestlers, pulled from Raw, SmackDown, ECW and a grab-bag of journeymen grapplers.
-
Street Fighter EX3
A 2D-series entry with a PS2 library listing that identifies it as a fighting game. It helps represent the platform’s range beyond the better-documented Capcom vs. SNK 2, but the evidence here does not include review detail sufficient to make stronger claims about its mechanics or reception. MobyGames’ PS2 fighting-game listings.

Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance
A final eligible PS2 fighter from the Mortal Kombat series. The platform library confirms the category, but the source material does not give the same mode-by-mode or reception detail available for Deception. Its inclusion recognizes the PS2 library’s variety rather than asserting it outperforms that better-documented sequel. MobyGames’ PS2 fighting-game listings.
Where Capcom Fighting Evolution fits
Capcom Fighting Evolution is a notable borderline pick rather than a top-ten selection here. It combines characters from Street Fighter II, Darkstalkers, Street Fighter III, Red Earth, and Street Fighter Alpha, but the crossover premise alone does not establish successful execution. Metacritic’s PS2 page reports a 57 Metascore from 33 critic reviews, accessed in 2026. That aggregate is one reception signal, not a definitive verdict on what an individual player may enjoy. Metacritic’s PS2 listing.
Quick Recap
Choosing among the top picks
- For technical 3D play with meaningful solo content: start with Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution.
- For a roster-driven 3D fighter and series extras: Tekken 5 has the clearest documented case in this ranking.
- For a 2D crossover: Capcom vs. SNK 2 offers the strongest contrast to the 3D-led choices.
- For modes, unlockables, and online play: Mortal Kombat: Deception is appealing, provided its uneven Konquest mode is not a deal-breaker.
