For a PS2 game that still feels distinctive, start with Resident Evil 4, Shadow of the Colossus, or Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater: each is built around a memorable play idea, not just nostalgia. This list balances action, role-playing, racing, platforming, and experimental play. “Still holds up” means its central design remains compelling; it does not mean every original camera, control, or display convention feels modern.
How this list chooses games that still hold up
The PS2 library is broad enough that a useful shortlist should represent different kinds of play rather than stack ten similar action games. These selections are ordered to move from defining action designs through open-world and role-playing adventures to lighter, more focused genres. Critical reputation and influence help identify enduring games, but they are not proof that every control scheme or camera has aged smoothly.

The recommendations refer to the original PS2 games unless a later version is explicitly identified. Remakes, remasters, and rereleases can alter visuals, controls, or availability, so they should not be treated as interchangeable with the originals.
The 10 best PS2 games that still hold up
1. Resident Evil 4
Resident Evil 4 remains a strong action-horror pick because its over-the-shoulder perspective makes aiming, movement, and threat management feel tightly connected. PlayStation’s history credits that viewpoint with helping move the series toward third-person action, while GameSpot’s retrospective highlights the game’s action-oriented approach and horror. The 2005 PS2 original is distinct from later versions, including the remake; choose based on whether you want the original design or a newer interpretation.
#1 Best Overall
- Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
2. Shadow of the Colossus
This is an unusually spare adventure: a quiet world, a solitary journey, and encounters that turn each colossus into a puzzle to climb and solve. PlayStation describes a story told quietly and sixteen colossi, an approach that still gives the game a strong identity amid more conventional action adventures. Later PlayStation versions exist, but they are not the PS2 original; the older release may also feel more dated in camera and control handling.
3. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
Snake Eater makes stealth a survival problem. Camouflage, close-quarters combat, injuries, and other survival systems give the player more to consider than simply staying out of sight. A 2025 retrospective describes the original PS2 game as still playable and notes the expanded Subsistence edition. The original, Subsistence, and the later remake are different versions, so check the edition before buying or deciding which experience you want.
Rank #2
- Drive through the largest GTA environment ever -- The game has three cities players can explore, for a gaming area 5 times larger than Vice City
- Recruit new characters into a street gang and take over by leading drive-by shootings against rivals Steal all-new vehicles, including bicycles
- Improved fighting elements -- smoother hand-to-hand combat, plus the ability to hold a weapon in each hand
- New graphics elements as cars get dirty and even rust, the longer you drive them
- Advanced role-playing elements -- Unlike previous GTA characters, Carl can swim and he needs to eat to survive
4. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
San Andreas is the open-world choice here: its broad setting and story give players room to move between narrative missions and free-form exploration. Stuff emphasizes the game’s scope, while Sony’s 2015 retrospective records a PS4 release among PS2 classics. That historical release is not confirmation that the game is currently available in every store or regional catalog.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches5. Ōkami
Ōkami stands out for its stylized visual identity and action-adventure structure. It offers a tonal and aesthetic change from the darker, more realistic games elsewhere on this list. Sony’s retrospective includes it among popular developer and journalist selections, and GameSpot describes it as a distinctive adventure. Later editions may differ from the PS2 version, so identify the version you are considering.
Rank #3
- Capcom Classics Collection includes the following features -
- Experience more than 20 groundbreaking and revolutionary games of their time on one disk
- Hundreds of hours of nostalgic gameplay
- Enjoy a wealth of added features including original artwork, remixed music and playing tips
6. Final Fantasy X
For a change of pace, Final Fantasy X is a turn-based role-playing game rather than an action title. Its structured battles and longer-form story make it a good fit for players who want character progression and deliberate combat instead of reflex-driven encounters. Sony’s developer-and-journalist retrospective included it among PS2 must-plays.
7. God of War II
God of War II is the list’s cinematic action pick, built around combat and large-scale environments. GameSpot’s retrospective says the sequel smooths out rough spots from the original and foregrounds its environments; that is an editorial judgment, but it helps explain why the game remains a notable entry for players seeking spectacle and direct action.
Rank #4
- Jimmy has been sent back behind enemy lines to steal the HO-IX flying wing, an experimental Nazi weapon
- To get it, you'll have to survive six major missions and 20 unique levels of gameplay
- There's all-new non-player character animations, with superior 3D details -- even full facial expressions and lip synchs
- Use 20 authentic WWII weapons, from a Colt. 45 pistol to a German Panzerschrenk rocket launcher
- You can even drive vehicles like the motorized rail car, train, and mine cart
8. Katamari Damacy
Katamari Damacy is the playful counterpoint to the list’s darker adventures. Its premise and puzzle-action feel make it a useful choice when you want something intentionally offbeat rather than another combat campaign. It appears among the popular picks in Sony’s retrospective of developers and journalists.

For racing, Burnout 3: Takedown brings a high-energy alternative to the slower exploration and story-driven games here. It was included in the description of IGN’s 2025 PS2 anniversary video, which makes that a sign of editorial selection rather than a technical evaluation of how the game performs today.

10. Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal
Up Your Arsenal rounds out the list with platform action, a broad weapon set, and the series’ characteristic mix of movement and combat. GameSpot describes it as still widely considered among the series’ best entries; that reputation is editorial, but it makes the game a worthwhile pick for players seeking a lighter, weapon-focused adventure.

These games hold up for their identities and central mechanics, not because every part of their presentation matches current conventions. Older camera behavior, control layouts, pacing, and the look of an original PS2 image on a modern display may take adjustment. Those are general considerations for older games, not verified defects in every title on this list; no hands-on control-latency or compatibility testing is established here.
Later versions can change the experience. In particular, a remake is a new interpretation, while a remaster or rerelease may preserve more of the original design but still alter presentation or access. If playing the original matters to you, confirm the platform and edition on the case or store listing before purchase.

How to play the PS2 originals today
The most direct route to the original versions is a working PlayStation 2 and the corresponding original discs. Condition varies, and no particular listing, seller, or current price is verified here. Before buying used hardware or a disc, check its condition and confirm compatibility with your setup.
A display adapter or component cable may help connect original hardware to a newer screen, but compatibility depends on the console and display. No specific adapter model has been tested or recommended here. Some games have later releases or appeared on other PlayStation platforms: for example, Sony’s 2015 blog records San Andreas arriving on PS4, while GamesRadar describes later versions of Shadow of the Colossus and subscription streaming for God of War. These are historical records, not guarantees of current availability in a particular region or service catalog.
