This ranking weighs each game’s influence, distinctive play, and how clearly Mikami’s creative role is documented; it is an editorial selection, not a definitive consensus ranking. The available documentation supports a shorter list of five titles, so this article ranks those rather than inventing credits for a full ten.
How this ranking works
Mikami’s name is associated with games across several genres and roles. Directing a game is not the same as producing it or having another form of involvement, so the entries below identify his role only where the cited sources establish it. The order values historical influence, mechanical identity, and documented responsibility—not just horror credentials.

1. Resident Evil
The original Resident Evil is the foundation of Mikami’s reputation and the clearest starting point. Nintendo’s Iwata Asks: PlatinumGames, Valuing the Players identifies it as a horror/action-adventure directed by Mikami and released by Capcom in August 1996.
Its importance reaches beyond one game: Capcom describes the series as helping establish survival horror in the 1990s. That historical influence makes the original essential, even when later entries offer more elaborate action and camera design. Capcom’s cited developer interview reports 100 million units shipped worldwide for the Resident Evil franchise; that is a series-wide figure, not sales for this game.
#1 Best Overall
2. Resident Evil 4
Resident Evil 4 earns a high place for the way it represents a major step in the series’ evolution. Nintendo’s interview says Mikami directed and produced the Resident Evil series through its fourth installment, making his responsibility here unusually clear. The evidence supports calling it part of his directed and produced work, but does not establish a more specific role split for this individual installment.
It is a strong candidate for Mikami’s best game if the priority is the series’ shift toward action-horror. The original remains more historically foundational; choosing between them depends on whether genre-making impact or the later series evolution matters more to you.
Rank #2
3. Vanquish
Vanquish shows Mikami working outside horror. PlatinumGames identifies it as a science-fiction shooter directed by Mikami. In a 2010 blog post, he described wanting a fast shooter without sections that felt like “slogging through,” and said the finished game was primarily a shooter with occasional hand-to-hand combat.

That clear design goal gives Vanquish a strong identity among his games: its appeal is speed and shooting, not dread or survival. PlatinumGames’ official game page and Mikami’s 2010 development blog document the game and its intent.
Rank #3
4. The Evil Within
The Evil Within belongs on this list as a survival-horror project associated directly with Mikami’s direction. In a 2014 interview with The Guardian, he discussed adapting camera movement and pacing to suit modern player expectations. That context makes the game notable not simply as a return to horror, but as an attempt to rethink how the genre should feel to contemporary players.
Mikami has also said, “Horror games are most scary when you’re by yourself.” That principle helps explain the value he places on isolation, though it should not be mistaken for a complete description of every design choice in the game. See The Guardian’s interview on Mikami and The Evil Within.
Rank #4
5. God Hand
God Hand rounds out this documented selection as a distinct action game in Mikami’s body of work. In his 2010 Vanquish blog, Mikami says Vanquish followed God Hand, establishing the connection but not, by itself, specifying his exact role on God Hand. Its inclusion reflects that documented creative context and the value of seeing his work beyond survival horror; the available sources do not support a more precise credit claim here.

The title promises ten, but a responsible ranking needs enough reliable evidence to identify each game and Mikami’s role. The available sources firmly establish the five entries above to different degrees; they do not provide comparable, title-specific credits for every other frequently discussed game. In particular, names such as Killer7, Viewtiful Joe, and Devil May Cry should not be assigned a precise Mikami role from a broad profile that does not distinguish the credit for each title.

Capcom’s interview also describes the Resident Evil franchise as having evolved across generations of staff. That matters when ranking Mikami-associated games: a series’ history is not the work of one person alone, and a franchise-wide legacy should not be turned into a claim that Mikami personally directed every entry.
Quick Recap
Which Shinji Mikami game should you start with?
- For survival-horror history: start with the original Resident Evil.
- For the series’ move toward action-horror: choose Resident Evil 4.
