The best Atomfall skills depend on how you survive: Disarm Traps is a strong all-round pick for exploration, while Deep Pockets, Healing Boost, and Gunsmith help scavengers and firearm users. There is no single best build, so use this base-game shortlist to spend Training Stimulants on abilities that solve problems you actually encounter.
How skills work in Atomfall
Atomfall has no conventional experience-level skill tree. You find Training Stimulants and spend them to learn skills that are available to you. Manuals reveal additional skills, so unlocking one may require both finding its Manual and spending the required stimulants. As Rebellion Senior Programmer Rich May put it in Xbox Wire’s launch guidance: “As you explore you will also uncover Manuals that teach you new skills – and unlock them by finding Training Stimulants.”

A 2025 Destructoid guide reports 36 skills in the base game: 12 available by default and 24 accessed through Manuals. It describes eight Manual types, with three skills per type. These are guide-reported base-game counts, not a total that includes expansions.

Favor abilities that address recurring needs in your run. Xbox Wire also stresses scavenging: weapons and ammunition are scarce, so carrying, healing, and resource-management skills can be as useful as damage upgrades.

This is a flexible shortlist, not a measured ranking. The first five are PCGamesN’s recommendations; the rest add options supported by guides with different playstyle emphases.

Disarm Traps
A high-utility exploration pick. It lets you disarm traps and recover their components instead of setting them off. PCGamesN calls it indispensable for moving through fortified areas and scavenging trapped resources.

Buff Duration
Extends the effects of consumables, giving you more time from combat or survival buffs. Choose it if tonics and other consumables are a regular part of your approach.

Increases carrying capacity for crafting supplies and ammunition. It is especially useful if you frequently scavenge and craft, or find yourself having to leave useful supplies behind.

Improves the health restoration over time provided by healing consumables. It suits a survival-minded player who often needs to recover after fights.

Unlocks recipes for weapon upgrades, making it a practical investment if you rely on firearms. Guides disagree about its Training Stimulant cost, so check the skill menu in your game rather than relying on a fixed number.

GamesRadar recommends this starting skill because health regenerates faster when it is low. Consider it if you want a passive safety net during combat.

Quiet Takedown
Reduces takedown noise, supporting a stealth approach. It pairs naturally with Quiet Movement if you plan to prioritize stealth, but is less compelling for a direct-combat run.

A situational defensive choice for hazardous areas. Take it when radiation exposure is a real concern in your route; it need not be an automatic early pick.

Charisma
Destructoid includes Charisma among its early recommendations because it improves selling prices with merchants. It pays off most for players who barter often, and less for those who rarely trade.

Melee Weapon Attack Power
Windows Central recommends this for a melee-heavy approach. More damage can shorten fights when melee weapons are your preferred way to deal with enemies.

The recommendations are not equally suited to every player: PCGamesN favors general utility and firearms, Destructoid highlights trading, GamesRadar includes recovery and survival or stealth choices, and Windows Central supports a melee-focused option. Treat the shortlist as a menu of trade-offs, not a consensus ranking.

Manuals, locations, and skill costs
Destructoid’s base-game location guide says Manuals can be found around the world or obtained through traders and story progression. For example, it places the Melee Combat Manual in Outlaw’s Cave, lists trader routes for several Manuals, and describes quest-linked routes for others. Use its Manual location guide as a third-party navigation reference rather than an official map.
Skill costs can also vary between guide listings. Gunsmith is listed as costing seven Training Stimulants by Destructoid and six by GamesRadar. Since the sources conflict, use the cost shown in your own game’s skill menu.
Do these recommendations include The Red Strain?
No: the ten picks above are a practical base-game shortlist. Rebellion’s official The Red Strain expansion information confirms that the expansion adds skills and equipment, and its support information recommends entering the area prepared. However, the official pages reviewed do not name those skills or give their effects and costs, so this list should not be treated as exhaustive for players with the expansion.
