For VR survival horror, choose The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners; for a TV-series action-adventure, consider The Walking Dead: Destinies. This ranked list weighs narrative strength, distinctiveness, accessibility on current platforms and gameplay style. The order is an editorial recommendation, not a ranking established by comparative review scores; players seeking different kinds of games may prefer different entries.
How this ranking works
The list ranks games by how well they deliver a distinctive Walking Dead experience, with story and character work weighted heavily and format, hardware needs and ease of access also considered. It includes both standalone games and a collection, so those entries are not equivalent purchases: the Definitive Series bundles several games ranked separately below. The sources available for these titles establish their formats and product descriptions, not a like-for-like critical scoring system.

The 10 best The Walking Dead games
1. The Walking Dead: The Final Season
For players who want a focused continuation of Clementine’s story, The Final Season is the strongest standalone starting point on this list. It is one of the four main seasons collected in the Definitive Series. If you plan to follow the complete arc, begin with Season One rather than starting here.

2. The Walking Dead: Season One
Season One is the natural entry point for the Telltale narrative games: it introduces the series’ story-driven approach and begins Clementine’s arc. Choose it first if you want to experience the games in story order and already own, or prefer to buy, a single season rather than a bundle.
#1 Best Overall
- Play the series that revolutionized storytelling in games. The Walking Dead: The Telltale Definitive Series contains all 4 Seasons, 400 Days DLC, and The Walking Dead: Michonne.
- “Graphic black” art style brings Season 4's enhanced visual style to all previous seasons of the acclaimed series.
- Exclusive looks at the making of the game from the developers, VO artists, and other team members that brought Clementine’s story to life.
- Character performances, lip syncing, and other gameplay and UI enhancements make this the definitive Telltale’s The Walking Dead experience.
- Music player that includes 140+ tracks across all seasons, art gallery, 3D model viewer with playable voice lines, & new 3D front end.
3. The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners
This is the franchise’s VR survival-horror branch among the games covered here. Its physical, first-person approach makes it a better fit for players seeking tense exploration and survival gameplay than for those looking for a choice-driven episodic story. Hardware requirements vary by version: the PlayStation 5 listing specifically requires PlayStation VR2; that requirement should not be generalized to every edition. See Skydance Media’s game page and the PlayStation listing for the relevant product details.
4. The Walking Dead: The Telltale Definitive Series
The best-value format for newcomers who want the full Telltale collection in one purchase, the Definitive Series includes all four seasons, 400 Days and The Walking Dead: Michonne. Xbox’s 2019 product listing describes “over 50 hours of gameplay across 23 unique episodes”; that is the store’s product-description figure, not an independently measured playtime guarantee. Check the edition and platform listing before buying. View the Xbox listing.
Rank #2
- Graphical enhancements: graphic Black art style brings Season 4's enhanced visual style to all previous seasons of the acclaimed series. Will also include full dynamic lighting to episodes that previously did not receive this upgrade.
- Behind the scenes bonuses: exclusive looks at the making of the game from the developers, VO artists, and other team members that brought Clementine's story to life. This includes over 10+ hours of developer commentary and other behind the scenes Material.
- Gameplay improvements: character performances, lip syncing, and other gameplay and UI enhancements make this the definitive tell-tale's the Walking Dead experience. Even more digital bonuses: music player that includes 40+ tracks across all seasons, art gallery, 3D model Viewer with playable voice lines, and new 3D front end that still includes the original menus and music from all past seasons
5. The Walking Dead: A New Frontier
The third main Telltale season is a useful next step for players continuing the episodic story after Season Two. It is included in the Definitive Series, which is a simpler option if you are starting the series and do not already own the earlier games.
6. The Walking Dead: Season Two
Season Two continues the Telltale story after Season One. It makes the most sense in sequence, since its character and story context comes from the earlier game; the Definitive Series packages both seasons along with the rest of the main collection.
Rank #3
- Shatter Fate: Alter the story of AMC’s The Walking Dead by weaving your own path through the series’ events. Save the villain, kill the hero… and live with the consequences.
- Slash, Bash, and Shoot the Undead: Slay hordes of walkers in third-person action with a variety of melee and ranged weapons, including bats, katanas, revolvers, shotguns, and crossbows.
- Build Your Dream Team: Assemble your roster from over twelve iconic characters from AMC’s The Walking Dead, including Rick, Shane, Michonne, Carol, Daryl, and more.
- Survive the Apocalypse: Manage limited resources, scavenge for weapons and ammo, and maximize your party’s abilities to stay alive.
- Experience the Tension: Defend your camp, rescue survivors, and fight through stealth and all-out combat. Get one last chance at survival in a “broken state” before the zombie threat overwhelms you.
7. The Walking Dead: Michonne
This Telltale miniseries centers on Michonne rather than serving as another main season in Clementine’s arc. It suits players who want a shorter character-focused side story and is included in the Definitive Series.
8. The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners – Chapter 2: Retribution
Retribution is the follow-up choice for players who want more of the Saints & Sinners VR survival-horror format. It is a separate game from the first entry, so check the platform edition and its requirements rather than assuming compatibility from the original game.
Rank #4
- The Walking Dead is an unparalleled journey into the heart of what it means to be human in a world that has lost its humanity
- Set in Robert Kirkman's award-winning comic book universe
- Your story is determined by the choices you make
- Enhanced graphics for Season One, Season Two, 400 Days and Michonne
9. The Walking Dead: 400 Days
This compact Telltale side story expands the world through a group of survivors and sits alongside the main seasons in the Definitive Series. Play it as a supplement to the episodic games, not as a replacement for Season One.

Destinies is an action-adventure based on the television series, revisiting events from seasons 1–4 and letting players change outcomes. It is the pick here for fans who want TV characters and alternate decisions rather than the comics-inspired, choice-focused Telltale format. Its official site lists PC and major console platforms; verify the current platform and edition listing for your region. Visit the official Destinies site.

- For VR survival horror: Start with Saints & Sinners, after confirming your headset and edition are compatible.

Platform and availability checks
Availability can differ by platform, edition and region, and store listings can change. In particular, Skybound Support says the Definitive Series has not been announced for Nintendo Switch; it notes that Season One and The Final Season are separately available. Do not assume the Switch status of those individual games means the collection is available on Switch. Check the relevant store and Skybound’s Definitive Series Switch support page before purchasing. For help finding official support routes for the series, consult Skybound Support.
