Fallout 4’s April 2024 next-gen update brought native PS5 and Xbox Series apps, new display options, PC support changes, free Creation Club content, and a long list of fixes. It was not one identical upgrade across every platform: the console features differed from the PC additions, and Bethesda revised console frame-rate controls in Update 2 on May 13, 2024. The specifications below are Bethesda’s announced settings and fixes, not independent performance test results.
1. Native PS5 and Xbox Series applications
The April update added native applications for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Bethesda said the update was free, but players needed to own Fallout 4 for the relevant device to download it. The announcement described the package as including native applications, display modes, stability improvements, and fixes (Bethesda’s April 11 announcement).

2. Performance mode set a 60 FPS target
In the original April 25 notes, Performance mode targeted 60 FPS at 4K using standard settings and dynamic resolution scaling. “Target” matters: Bethesda did not promise a locked 60 FPS in every scene, and the notes are not a platform-by-platform benchmark (original update notes).

The original Quality mode targeted 30 FPS at 4K with ultra settings. Bethesda also listed a 40 FPS target when connected to a 120 Hz display. For a 1440p display, it specified 1440p at 60 FPS with ultra settings regardless of rendering mode. These were the original mode descriptions, not a guarantee that every console and display combination would produce identical results.

4. Update 2 added selectable frame-rate targets and priorities
Bethesda’s May 13, 2024 Update 2 notes introduced a more flexible set of console options on PS5 and Xbox Series S|X. The game’s menu wording is “Frame Rate Target” and “Visuals/Performance Target”; Bethesda stated that 60 is the default frame-rate target. A 120 Hz display is required to select 40 FPS.
| Update 2 setting | Options or behavior |
|---|---|
| Frame Rate Target | 30, 40, or 60 FPS; 60 is the default. |
| Visuals/Performance Target | Visuals or Performance priority. |
| Changing options | Settings can be changed only from the main menu. |
| Demanding scenes | Either priority may dynamically adjust internal resolution. |
These are selectable targets and priorities, not measured results for every scene. Bethesda’s Update 2 notes describe the controls and conditions (Update 2 release notes).

5. PC gained widescreen and ultrawide support
Bethesda announced support for both widescreen and ultrawide displays on PC. The original notes also listed Creation Kit fixes. These PC additions are separate from the native console applications and console display controls; the notes do not establish a specific resolution or frame-rate guarantee for every PC setup.
6. Steam Deck verification and an Epic Games Store release
The April 25 notes included Steam Deck verification and the release of Fallout 4 on the Epic Games Store. Bethesda listed these alongside the PC changes, broadening where players could access the game beyond its existing PC distribution options.

These are issues Bethesda said it addressed; the notes do not establish that every affected player’s problem was eliminated.
Quick Recap
Which changes matter most depends on how you play
- On PS5 or Xbox Series S|X: the native app and Update 2’s target and priority controls are the central changes. The usable options depend on display refresh rate, and Bethesda’s listed values are targets rather than a cross-platform benchmark.
- On PC: widescreen and ultrawide support, the Creation Kit fixes, Steam Deck verification, and Epic Games Store availability are the relevant additions.
- If you want new quests and build options: the three named content additions are Enclave Remnants, Makeshift Weapon Pack, and Halloween Workshop.
- If you are comparing versions: Bethesda’s notes establish announced features and fixes, but do not provide controlled performance comparisons between platforms or confirm how every later patch may have changed the game.
