Classic first-person shooters are worth revisiting for different reasons, not because they have all aged in the same way. Choose DOOM or Quake for speed, GoldenEye 007 for stealth and split-screen play, Half-Life for a story-led campaign and modding legacy, or System Shock 2 for shooting blended with horror and role-playing systems. This is a varied selection, not a ranked list of the ten greatest FPS games.
How to choose a classic FPS
Start with the kind of play you want: direct arena combat, a campaign with a strong narrative, tactical stealth, competitive multiplayer, or a hybrid that borrows from horror and role-playing games. These games also come from different traditions—PC shooters, console-first experiences, and multiplayer games—so their historical importance does not guarantee that each will feel equally comfortable today.

Xbox Wire’s 2015 history of the genre provides context for the selection and its distinctions; it is best read as a historical overview, not a guide to current store availability. Present-day access is specifically documented below only for games with newer official release information.
10 classic FPS games worth revisiting
1. DOOM — a direct route to the genre’s foundations
Developed in 1993, DOOM is a natural starting point for players curious about the genre’s early identity. Its place here is as a foundational, action-first shooter. Bethesda’s 2024 release notes describe an enhanced combined release with DOOM II, making this an officially documented modern route to both games.
#1 Best Overall
- Crysis Remastered Trilogy includes each of the single-player campaigns from the legendary first-person shooters Crysis, Crysis 2, and Crysis 3
- optimized for today's hardware
- Relive the adventure in this great value all-in-one bundle.
2. DOOM II — more of the original formula
Released in 1994, DOOM II continues the series’ early approach to fast, direct shooting. It is a useful companion to the original rather than a different kind of FPS; Bethesda’s combined release packages the pair together, alongside additional content described in its release notes.
3. Quake — speed, combat, and the move into 3D
Quake is the pick for players who want movement and combat to stay at the center. It was first released on June 22, 1996, according to the Epic Games Store listing. Xbox Wire’s genre history also discusses its influence on 3D graphics and multiplayer groups. id Software executive producer Kevin Cloud described its appeal as “the fast movement and combat with clear and fun game mechanics.”

- Mobile friendly optimized game
- Multiple amazing environmen
- Smooth Controls
- Real encounter strike commando missions
- Detailed beautifully designed environments
The Epic listing describes an enhanced version with widescreen and high-resolution support, the two original expansions, additional expansions, and co-op and multiplayer. Details and catalog availability can differ by platform and region, so check the listing for the version you intend to play.
4. GoldenEye 007 — stealth and split-screen console play
Released for Nintendo 64 in 1997, GoldenEye 007 brought stealth elements and split-screen multiplayer together in a console-oriented package, as Xbox Wire’s 2015 retrospective recounts. It is a different proposition from the speed-focused PC shooters on this list: its appeal is tied to its missions, stealth approach, and shared local play.

The official James Bond franchise announcement documented availability through Nintendo Switch Online and Xbox Game Pass. It noted online multiplayer on Switch, handheld play, and Xbox achievements. That was a launch announcement, not confirmation of today’s regional subscription catalog; check the service in your country before subscribing or expecting access.
5. Half-Life — a campaign whose influence extended into mods
Half-Life is the story-led choice in this group. Xbox Wire’s 2015 genre history singles out its campaign and the mod-ability that helped inspire further game experiences. Its inclusion is about that combination of narrative and community-created possibilities, rather than a claim that its present-day availability is the same across platforms.

- EXTREME-RANGE SNIPING Series veterans are in for a challenge, as Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts 2 demands a new level of skill, focus, and precision, with many targets now over a 1000m away - a first for the series
- NEXT - LEVEL REALISM Developed by the same studio behind the original game, Contracts 2 pushes new boundaries with its hyper-realistic sniping experience; master a wide arsenal of weaponry based on authentic military equipment; explore vast terrains with an enhanced level of detail; and confront the series’ most lifelike enemies to date.
- PLAN YOUR ASSAULT Equipped with all-new equipment, each highly replayable contract can be completed in a variety of ways. Replay the mission with a different approach to complete all objectives, ready to spend your earnings on improved gadgets and weaponry.
- UPGRADED VISUALS Contracts 2 introduces new levels of fidelity, with optimized visuals, improved FPS, and an enhanced game engine, resulting in the best looking entry to the series yet. Pull off ultra realistic stealth kills, captured in viscerally graphic detail thanks to the cinematic bullet cam.
6. Unreal Tournament — arena competition
For players drawn to multiplayer competition, Unreal Tournament represents the arena side of classic FPS design. Xbox Wire names it among early FPS titles in esports. Its reason to revisit is the competitive focus, distinct from the campaign-first games elsewhere on this list.
7. System Shock 2 — shooting with horror and RPG systems
System Shock 2 is the clearest hybrid here: Xbox Wire describes it as combining FPS mechanics with survival horror and role-playing elements. Choose it if you want shooting to sit inside a more layered, unsettling experience rather than serving as the whole point of play.

8. Halo — a console-era blend of story and competition
Halo offers a console-era alternative, combining storytelling and competitive multiplayer. Xbox Wire places it among the important Xbox launch-era titles. It earns a place for that pairing of campaign and multiplayer, not because it plays like the faster arena-focused entries.
9. Counter-Strike — multiplayer built from a mod
Counter-Strike began as a Half-Life mod and became a distinct multiplayer-focused branch of the genre, according to Xbox Wire’s history. It is the choice for readers more interested in team competition than a traditional single-player campaign.
10. Medal of Honor — a historical war setting
Medal of Honor represents another direction for the FPS: a war game framed around a historical setting. Xbox Wire includes it in its account of the genre’s development. Its place in this selection broadens the range beyond arena action and science-fiction worlds.
