Games that simulate crowds, AI, physics, traffic, large battles, or multiplayer worlds can put substantial work on a processor. Ten PC games often cited for those demands are Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, Cities: Skylines II, Starfield, Dragon’s Dogma 2, Baldur’s Gate 3, Escape from Tarkov, Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty, Hogwarts Legacy, Total War: Warhammer III, and Arma Reforger.
This is a useful shortlist, not a verified ranking: the source does not document a matched benchmark across all ten games. CPU demands also vary with the scene, settings, resolution, and the rest of the PC. Position Is Everything’s 2026 list identifies the workload patterns behind its selections; independent test reports provide examples for other games, not a direct comparison of these ten.
Which PC games are the most CPU-intensive in 2026?
The following games are notable for workloads that can shift work toward the CPU. The descriptions reflect the reasons given by Position Is Everything, rather than a standardized ranking or a claim that every PC will struggle with them.

Terrain and scenery streaming, aircraft systems, air traffic, and weather all contribute to the simulation workload. Dense airports and add-ons can add further demands.

Terrain, ballistics, vehicles, AI, and multiplayer synchronization all contribute to its simulation demands. Server conditions can also limit performance, so not every slowdown points to a local CPU.
Why these games can stress a processor
Rendering is only part of a game’s workload. The CPU may need to update game logic, simulate objects and agents, coordinate traffic or combat, and prepare work for the GPU. Intel’s guidance puts it plainly: “Games with complex AI, physics, and graphical post-processing tend to be more CPU-intensive and may benefit more from a CPU with a higher core/thread count and higher clock speed.” Intel’s CPU benchmark guide also emphasizes that games use processors differently: some favor a few fast cores, while others can use more cores.

Streaming, crowds, networking, and large simulations can add to that work, but a game’s reputation is not a performance guarantee. A busy city, airport, hub, or battle may behave differently from a quiet area in the same game. Memory, storage, graphics hardware, software, resolution, and settings affect overall results too.
What recent CPU-heavy game tests can—and cannot—show
Independent 2026 reports illustrate why test conditions matter, but neither compares the ten games above as a group.

In a Tom’s Hardware test of Gears of War E-Day, CPU utilization was reported at 80% to 90%. With an RTX 5090 at 1080p High, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D delivered 42% higher performance than the Ryzen 5 7600X. The test used 1080p to expose CPU differences; Tom’s Hardware omitted 4K because its graphics analysis found the game GPU-bound at that resolution. These findings describe that game and test setup, not a predicted result for the titles in this list.

PC Gamer’s Forza Horizon 6 analysis reported CPU utilization typically in the high 70% to 80% range on a Ryzen 5 5600X setup, with occasional rises into the 90s. On a Ryzen 7 7700X setup, utilization was generally around 30%, rising to roughly 45% to 50% in more detailed scenes. Those observations are specific to the systems and game conditions tested.
Tom’s Hardware’s September 2026 gaming CPU guide describes a benchmark selection of 17 demanding games. That wider selection can inform a general CPU recommendation, but it does not confirm this article’s ten-game shortlist or establish an order among its entries.

How to tell whether your CPU is limiting performance
Low GPU utilization or a frame rate that barely changes when resolution is lowered can be clues, but neither alone proves a CPU bottleneck. A game may be limited by another component, software, a particular engine behavior, or a server. Diagnose it in the same demanding scene and at the resolution and settings you actually use.

Choose a repeatable scene. Use a busy town, airport, battle, or other situation where you notice slowdowns. Repeat the same route or sequence so that comparisons are meaningful.

Compare frame rate and frame pacing. Look beyond the average: dips and uneven frame times can affect smoothness even when the average seems acceptable.

Observe CPU and GPU behavior together. Check whether GPU utilization remains low while the CPU is heavily occupied, but treat utilization as one clue rather than a diagnosis. Overall CPU percentages can conceal a heavily loaded game thread.

Change one setting at a time. Lowering resolution often reduces GPU work. If performance barely improves in the same scene, that may point toward a non-GPU limit, but it is not conclusive on its own.

Check the whole system. Intel notes that memory, storage, software, graphics hardware, and settings can all affect results. For multiplayer games, consider server conditions as well as local hardware.
Intel’s explanation of how CPU benchmarks work is useful context: a low-resolution test paired with a powerful graphics card can reveal CPU differences that are masked when a game is GPU-bound at higher resolution. That makes benchmark results informative, but not interchangeable with every player’s setup.
Should you upgrade your CPU for these games?
Only consider a purchase after checking that the processor is actually limiting the performance you want. A CPU upgrade may help with CPU-bound scenes, but the available evidence does not establish a specific gain across all ten games. Check your motherboard and platform compatibility, budget, target resolution, and the performance you need before choosing a processor.
Tom’s Hardware names the Ryzen 7 9800X3D as its overall gaming CPU pick in its September 2026 guide. That is one recommendation from its benchmark selection, not a universal requirement for these games. The same guide and its test results should be considered alongside your own system and priorities.
