For a first-person RPG with room to explore, start with The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim or Cyberpunk 2077. For a different kind of adventure, consider a dense cyberpunk hub, a medieval role-playing journey, or a grid-based dungeon crawl. This is GamesRadar+’s editorial selection of ten games, not an objective ranking; its list spans games built around first person and games that let you choose your viewpoint.

10 first-person RPGs to play

The order below follows GamesRadar+’s list. Its writer says the selections commit to first person or become especially compelling from that perspective, and that the list is updated when new games merit inclusion. That is the outlet’s stated approach, not an independently verified playtest or a shared scoring system. Read GamesRadar+’s list and descriptions.

  1. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Skyrim is the list’s top pick for fantasy exploration and build freedom. Follow the main quest or set it aside to pursue other adventures and develop your character. It suits players who want a broad fantasy world to explore at their own pace. Bethesda’s catalog lists the game and storefront options; check the platform and edition that match your setup.

  2. Fallout: New Vegas

Set in the Mojave, this post-apocalyptic RPG offers branching quests and VATS tactical aiming. Choose it if you want a science-fiction setting where quests and character decisions matter as much as combat. Bethesda’s catalog lists storefront options for the title; confirm the platform and edition before buying.

    #1 Best Overall
in Dreams - a Slightly Surreal Storytelling Game for one Player (14+)
    • In Dreams is a slightly surreal storytelling game for one, which uses vivid imagery and evocative prompts to immerse you in a dreamworld you wouldn’t have otherwise imagined.
    • In this storytelling solo game, the player writes a story in which a character in a dreamworld must complete a specific goal before waking. The player begins by drawing cards to create a randomized character with a starting temperament. Card draws will also determine the goal the character must achieve by the dream's end in order for the player to win.
    • Storytelling then begins by drawings cards to create an Encounter. An Encounter consists of 2-4 short prompts as well as a location. All Encounter cards include surreal artwork to help inspire fresh and creative interpretations each game. The player must immediately write about the generated Encounter, including all of the prompts and the location while attempting to move the character closer to their goal.
    • Some Encounters will prompt the player to generate an Event. Two cards from the Event deck will determine what is happening as well as the tone. These cards too include surreal artwork for inspiration. Events are resolved in the same manner as Encounters.
    • The game continues, with the player drawing and resolving Encounters and Events through storytelling until the character's goal is met.
  3. Kingdom Come: Deliverance II

This grounded medieval RPG follows Henry. Its progression includes exploration, teachers, quests, and perks, while the player shapes how Henry’s journey unfolds. It is a fit for players seeking a historical setting rather than fantasy or science fiction. Deep Silver’s official page describes its progression systems.

  4. Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines

Choose this urban supernatural RPG for vampire politics, city exploration, and role-play choices. Clans offer different powers and can shape how you approach quests and conversations, making it a strong pick if you want character identity and social decisions to matter.

  5. Labyrinth of Galleria: The Moon Society

This turn-based grid dungeon crawler sends you through a maze filled with traps. You customize puppet fighters and use abilities that can change routes through the dungeon. Its inclusion is a reminder that first-person RPG recommendations are not limited to open-world action games.

    Rank #2
Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin - PlayStation 4
    • All 3 DLC Pack Contents: Crown of the Sunken King, Crown of the Old Iron King, Crown of the Ivory King
    • Additional NPCs Added For Enhanced Story Experience To Assist Guiding Players Through Level
    • Parameter Setting Adjustments for Improved Balance
    • Augmented Item Descriptions
    • Increase in Maximum Online Players
  6. Deus Ex: Human Revolution

In this cyberpunk RPG, missions can be approached through stealth, social abilities, or combat upgrades. Its dense spaces reward looking around without requiring an enormous open world. Pick it if you prefer compact, layered locations and multiple ways to handle obstacles.

  7. Legend of Grimrock

A deliberate, grid-based dungeon adventure built around traps, monsters, puzzles, and party progression. It also includes a dungeon editor. Choose it for a focused crawl through dangerous spaces rather than a sprawling world.

  8. Dread Delusion

This offbeat fantasy RPG pairs retro-styled visuals with old-school combat, skills, and discovery-led progression. It is the choice for players who want a stranger, smaller-scale open-world trip instead of a conventional blockbuster fantasy adventure.

  9. Cyberpunk 2077

CD Projekt Red describes Cyberpunk 2077 as an open-world role-playing game about V in a dangerous future city. Gigs and consequential choices shape the story and the people V encounters in Night City. GamesRadar+ highlights its strongly first-person presentation, with third-person view limited to some vehicle segments. Consider it if you want a modern city setting and a first-person perspective that is central to the experience. See CD Projekt Red’s official game site.

  10. Avowed

This fantasy RPG supports both first- and third-person perspectives. Its Living Lands exploration and flexible dual-wielding combat make it a good fit if you want modern fantasy but would like the option to switch viewpoints.

How to choose the right first-person RPG

Start with the experience you want rather than treating the list as a universal best-to-worst ranking. GamesRadar+ does not publish a numerical score or consistent rubric for these picks, so the most useful comparison is practical:

  • Setting: Choose fantasy in Skyrim or Avowed, futuristic cyberpunk in Cyberpunk 2077 or Deus Ex: Human Revolution, post-apocalyptic science fiction in Fallout: New Vegas, medieval history in Kingdom Come: Deliverance II, or urban supernatural intrigue in Bloodlines.
  • Viewpoint: If you want a first-person presentation that is especially central, GamesRadar+ points to Cyberpunk 2077. If you want a choice of perspective, Avowed supports first and third person.
  • World structure: Look to Skyrim or Cyberpunk 2077 for broad exploration, Deus Ex: Human Revolution for dense spaces, and Legend of Grimrock or Labyrinth of Galleria for grid-based dungeon crawling.
  • Combat: The selection spans shooting, melee, magic, tactical aiming, and turn-based systems. Check the individual game descriptions above for the style that appeals to you.
  • Role-playing emphasis: For branching quests and choices, consider Fallout: New Vegas or Cyberpunk 2077. For clan identity and conversation approaches, look at Bloodlines; for a player-shaped medieval journey, consider Kingdom Come: Deliverance II.

Other first-person RPGs to consider

The Outer Worlds

If you want another first-person science-fiction option, Obsidian explicitly describes The Outer Worlds as a first-person sci-fi RPG with a player-driven story shaped by your character. Obsidian’s official page is a useful starting point.

Fallout 4

Fallout 4 is another option for players interested in a post-apocalyptic RPG. Bethesda says its Anniversary Edition contains the base game, six official expansions, and more than 150 Creation Club items. Those contents describe that edition specifically; confirm the platform and package before purchasing. Bethesda’s Fallout 4 page provides the edition information.

Check platform and edition before buying

Availability and included content can depend on the platform, edition, region, and storefront. Bethesda’s catalog lists platform and store options for Skyrim, Fallout: New Vegas, and Fallout 4. For other games, use the publisher’s official page or your preferred store to confirm the version available for your system. No current price, stock, or retailer listing is established here.
