Short answer: an RTX 5090 is easiest to justify if you play demanding games at 4K, care about path tracing or other ray-traced effects, and want headroom for high-refresh output. It is not required to play any of the games below. The strongest cases are Cyberpunk 2077 and Alan Wake 2, where full ray tracing can make the GPU’s capabilities visible; other games offer useful but narrower demonstrations.

This is a shortlist of games that show different parts of the RTX 5090’s appeal, not a claim that they are the ten fastest or most demanding titles in a single comparable benchmark. Several cited performance figures come from NVIDIA demonstrations using upscaling and frame generation, not independent tests of native rendering.

What makes a game a good reason to buy an RTX 5090?

NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 5090 has 32 GB of GDDR7 memory and is positioned for 4K gaming, ray tracing and neural rendering. Those capabilities matter most in games that use demanding lighting effects or at high resolution. They matter less if you play at 1080p, favor modest settings, or are already satisfied with your current frame rates. NVIDIA’s product page describes the card and its features.

It is also important to distinguish rendered frames from generated frames. DLSS Super Resolution reconstructs an image from a lower internal resolution; Multi Frame Generation inserts generated frames between traditionally rendered ones. A reported output rate using these features is not the same as that many natively rendered frames, and it does not by itself establish image quality or responsiveness.

The games below are grouped by what they demonstrate. Where the available evidence is a manufacturer announcement or demonstration, that is identified rather than presented as an independent benchmark.

The games that best show the RTX 5090’s strengths

1. Cyberpunk 2077 — full path tracing at 4K

Cyberpunk 2077 is the clearest fit for a player who wants to see path tracing push a GPU. NVIDIA reported an RTX 5090 demonstration at up to 280 FPS at 4K with DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation and the broader DLSS suite. That is NVIDIA’s demonstration figure, not a promise of typical play or a native-rendering result. NVIDIA’s game update article gives the context.

Independent testing also shows why a single frame-rate figure is incomplete. PC Gamer compared DLSS 4 and DLSS 4.5 in Cyberpunk 2077 at 4K Performance mode with path tracing on an RTX 5090. The reviewer found a more stable image and less pixel crawling with DLSS 4.5, but also noted loss of fine-line detail and more noticeable halos in some scenes. PC Gamer’s comparison is a useful reminder to consider image quality as well as output FPS.

2. Alan Wake 2 — full ray tracing and maximum settings

Alan Wake 2 is another demanding showcase for full ray tracing. NVIDIA reported up to 230 FPS with maximum settings and full ray tracing in an RTX 5090 demonstration using Multi Frame Generation and other DLSS technologies. NVIDIA also described the result as an 8.7× average performance multiplier versus brute-force rendering for that demonstration. Both figures are specific to NVIDIA’s stated configuration; neither should be generalized to other games or treated as a native-rendered result. NVIDIA’s update describes the demonstration and the game’s DLSS 4, RTX Mega Geometry and ray-tracing updates.

3. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle — reconstruction and detailed character rendering

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is a useful example of newer RTX features extending beyond lighting. NVIDIA described an update adding DLSS Ray Reconstruction, Multi Frame Generation and RTX Hair. These features target image reconstruction, generated output and hair rendering respectively. NVIDIA’s announcement is the source for the integration details; it is not an independent performance test. See NVIDIA’s game update article.

4. Hogwarts Legacy — ray-traced effects with DLSS 4

Hogwarts Legacy combines ray-traced effects with DLSS 4 support, making it a relevant test of both lighting features and reconstruction. NVIDIA reported an upgraded ray-tracing implementation and shared a generated-frame demonstration. Generated output should not be confused with the base render rate; the demonstration also involved a CPU bottleneck, so its result is not a clean measure of how much GPU rendering capacity the RTX 5090 adds. NVIDIA’s article provides the announcement details.

5. Star Wars Outlaws — ray tracing with RTXDI

Star Wars Outlaws is relevant for its RTXDI-enhanced ray tracing and Ray Reconstruction, alongside DLSS 4 support described by NVIDIA. These features make it a reasonable choice for exploring ray-traced lighting and image reconstruction, though the cited NVIDIA material does not provide a comparable independent RTX 5090 benchmark. NVIDIA’s update article outlines the announced integrations.

6. Black Myth: Wukong — a demanding ray-tracing candidate

Black Myth: Wukong is often considered for demanding PC graphics, but the evidence available here does not establish a specific current game mode, configuration or independent RTX 5090 result. Treat it as a candidate to try if its ray-tracing options suit your preferences, not as a proven RTX 5090 benchmark entry.

7. Portal with RTX — a path-tracing demonstration

Portal with RTX is a natural example to consider for path tracing, but the available material does not document its current availability or provide an independent RTX 5090 test. It can illustrate the visual workload in principle; this shortlist cannot substantiate a specific performance expectation for it.

8. DOOM: The Dark Ages — verify the specific RTX features

DOOM: The Dark Ages has been discussed as an RTX showcase, but the available material does not confirm the precise shipped rendering features or provide an independent RTX 5090 performance result. Check the game’s current settings and feature support before treating it as a reason to upgrade.

9. Resident Evil Requiem — announced path tracing, not a verified playable example

NVIDIA announced path-tracing support for Resident Evil Requiem in August 2025. That announcement alone does not establish that the game has shipped with the feature or what performance an RTX 5090 delivers. It is therefore a future-facing example rather than a confirmed playable benchmark here. NVIDIA’s Gamescom 2025 article documents the announcement.

10. The Witcher 4 — an upcoming title, not a current reason to upgrade

NVIDIA discussed planned RTX Mega Geometry foliage work for the upcoming The Witcher 4. Until the game is released and its implementation can be evaluated, it should not be counted among games a buyer can play now. Tom’s Hardware’s coverage describes the technology demonstration, not a retail-game benchmark.

How to judge the performance claims

Benchmark numbers only answer a useful question when their settings and method are clear. A 4K output can be upscaled from a lower internal resolution, and Multi Frame Generation can increase displayed output beyond the traditionally rendered frame rate. Neither makes the result meaningless, but they describe a different experience from native 4K rendering without frame generation.

  • Check the rendering workload: full path tracing is more demanding than a few ray-traced effects.
  • Check resolution and quality: note whether the result is native 4K or DLSS-upscaled, and whether it uses a maximum preset or custom settings.
  • Check the frame-rate method: distinguish the base render rate from output that includes frame generation.
  • Consider visual trade-offs: reconstruction can improve stability or performance, but may affect fine detail or produce artifacts in some scenes.
  • Prefer comparable test conditions: GPU, CPU, game version, driver, test scene and DLSS mode all affect the result.

Tom’s Hardware’s RTX 5090 testing used five demanding ray-tracing games, four with path tracing, on a Ryzen 7 9800X3D system with 32 GB of DDR5-6000 memory and a 4 TB PCIe 5.0 SSD. The publication cautioned that some GPU comparisons were not strictly apples-to-apples because DLSS and Ray Reconstruction support differed. Read its test methodology and caveats.

When an RTX 5090 is worth considering

  • It is a stronger fit if you have a 4K high-refresh display, want to use demanding ray tracing or path tracing, and value visual headroom enough to pay for a flagship GPU.
  • It is a weaker fit if you play at lower resolutions, do not care about ray tracing, or your current graphics card already meets your performance needs.
  • It is not justified by a single generated-FPS figure. Look for the base render rate, settings and upscaling mode alongside the displayed output rate.

DLSS support is broad but changes over time. NVIDIA reported more than 175 DLSS 4 games and applications in its August 18, 2025 Gamescom article; that is a dated vendor count, not a current total. NVIDIA’s Gamescom announcement also discusses new integrations. An executive statement in that article characterized DLSS 4 and path tracing as a foundation for modern PC gaming; that is a vendor position, not evidence that every player or game benefits equally.

Check system fit before buying

The RTX 5090’s board-partner cards can differ from NVIDIA’s reference specifications. NVIDIA recommends a PCIe CEM 5.1-compliant PSU and notes that power requirements depend on the complete system; it does not establish one universal wattage for every build. Before purchase, check the exact card maker’s power guidance, connector requirements, card dimensions and case clearance, then account for the rest of your components. NVIDIA’s product page includes the reference guidance and board-partner caveat.

A 4K high-refresh display can help reveal the card’s output capabilities, but whether it adds value depends on your current display and the games and settings you use. If you do not have a display suited to your target resolution and refresh rate, include that in the overall upgrade decision.
