If you love Arma 3 for its military sandbox and freedom to shape missions, start with Arma Reforger. If you want a different part of the experience—large team battles, tightly coordinated co-op, survival or logistics—there are other strong fits, but none is a direct substitute for every part of Arma 3.
That distinction matters: Bohemia Interactive describes Arma 3 as a “military sandbox,” so battlefield scale, tactical gunplay, teamwork and scenario freedom are separate things to compare. These ten games share some of those qualities, not all of them.

Which Arma 3 qualities do you want to keep?
- Scenario-building and sandbox play: begin with Arma Reforger.
- Large battles with coordinated teams: consider Squad for modern combat or Hell Let Loose for a historical setting.
- Small-team tactics: look at GROUND BRANCH, Insurgency: Sandstorm, Six Days in Fallujah or Ready or Not, depending on whether you prefer customization, PvP, co-op missions or close-quarters police tactics.
- A different kind of campaign and progression: Escape from Tarkov, Foxhole and DayZ move farther from the Arma formula, toward extraction, persistent logistics and survival, respectively.
10 games to try if you love Arma 3
1. Arma Reforger — for the closest sandbox connection
Arma Reforger is the most natural first stop if what you value is the Arma combination of military combat and player-shaped scenarios. Bohemia Interactive’s official site describes its Conflict mode and its Game Master tools for creating and directing scenarios. That makes it a closer match for the sandbox side of Arma 3 than a shooter that shares only its military theme.
The official site lists PC, Xbox and PlayStation 5 support. Those details reflect the site as checked on October 7, 2026; check the official Arma Reforger site for current platform and update information.
#1 Best Overall
- Player-driven story
- More than 70 weapons
- Over 100 different vehicles
- Massive online battles
- Game world of 225 square km
2. Squad — for coordinated, large-scale modern battles
If the draw is moving with a large team, communicating under pressure and fighting alongside vehicles, Squad is a relevant alternative. Comparative coverage describes its battles as large-scale and vehicle-inclusive. It is a better match for the collective battlefield experience than for Arma 3’s scenario-building freedom; the available comparison does not establish a current player count.
3. Hell Let Loose — for large battles in a historical setting
Hell Let Loose shifts the setting to World War II. Its appeal for an Arma fan is the scale and coordination of battle, not modern military equipment or an open-ended sandbox. The official franchise site lists the original WWII game and, as of October 7, 2026, describes Hell Let Loose: Vietnam as upcoming and available to wishlist. Since release plans can change, consult the official Hell Let Loose franchise site for the latest status.
4. GROUND BRANCH — for small-team tactics and gear choices
GROUND BRANCH suits players who want to focus on outfitting a small team and working together through tactical encounters, rather than commanding a broad battlefield. Its official site emphasizes gear customization and teamwork. The site says version 1.0 is available on Steam; its Steam listing describes eight-player co-op and 8v8 adversarial modes. These mode details come from the listing checked for this article, so confirm the current options on the official GROUND BRANCH site and Steam page.
Rank #2
5. Insurgency: Sandstorm — for tactical PvP and objective-focused co-op
Insurgency: Sandstorm is a fit if you want team-based tactical shooting but prefer matches and objectives to open-ended scenario play. Publisher Focus Entertainment describes it as offering PvP alongside objective-oriented co-op. That mix gives it more than one way to play, but it does not make it a substitute for Arma 3’s sandbox framing. See the publisher’s Insurgency: Sandstorm page for its current mode information.

Six Days in Fallujah is worth considering if you are looking for a mission-focused experience that can be played solo or online with others. Its Steam listing describes both options and labels the game Early Access. That status is subject to change, and it is useful context when deciding whether its current scope is right for you. Check the Steam listing for current status and content.
7. Escape from Tarkov — for high-risk extraction and gear progression
Escape from Tarkov is the genre-adjacent pick for players drawn to the stakes of risking equipment and trying to get out with what they find. Extraction is a fundamentally different loop from Arma 3’s military sandbox, so choose it for that tension and progression rather than expecting broad scenario freedom. Current product details are not established here; check the game’s official channels before making a platform or availability decision.
8. Foxhole — for a war effort that includes logistics
Foxhole takes the war beyond the individual firefight: comparative coverage highlights player-made equipment and logistics. Its isometric viewpoint makes it a sharp departure from Arma 3’s first-person military sandbox, but it may appeal if the part you enjoy is contributing to a larger coordinated effort rather than focusing only on personal combat.
9. DayZ — for survival in an Arma-related lineage
DayZ is a survival-oriented option for players interested in the harsher, less mission-directed side of the Arma family tree. It is a genre and lineage connection, not a promise of the same military scenarios, battlefield scale or structure. Current product details are not established here, so verify the game’s official information if platform or availability affects your choice.
10. Ready or Not — for deliberate close-quarters team tactics
Ready or Not narrows the focus to close-quarters police tactics. It can suit players who prize careful coordination and disciplined room-to-room decisions, but its setting and scale are a clear contrast with Arma 3’s military sandbox. Treat it as a tactical change of pace, not a battlefield replacement; current product details are not established here.

The useful comparison is not simply “realistic” versus “arcade.” A game can offer tactical teamwork without a large battlefield, or a large war without the same first-person perspective or freedom to make scenarios. Use the distinctions below to narrow your choice.

How to choose your next game
- Start with the activity you miss most. For building or directing scenarios, try Arma Reforger. For a large team battlefield, compare Squad and Hell Let Loose.
- Decide how many people and what kind of teamwork you want. GROUND BRANCH emphasizes small-team tactics; Insurgency: Sandstorm combines PvP with objective co-op; Six Days in Fallujah offers solo and online co-op according to its Steam listing.
- Choose how far you want to move from a conventional shooter. Ready or Not shifts to close-quarters police tactics, DayZ to survival, Escape from Tarkov to extraction, and Foxhole to an isometric war effort that includes logistics.
- Verify current availability and status before buying or installing. The evidence here supports specific current details for some games, not every title’s platforms, prices or development status. Use each game’s official or storefront page for those decisions.
