If you want to be the threat instead of fighting it, Carrion is the clearest match: you control a creature escaping captivity and hunting its captors. The other games here broaden the idea in different ways, from playing an alien invader or a zombie to taking a monster role in a hunt or fighting game. Those distinctions matter: not every entry is a creature-led horror game.
Direct creature and monster protagonists
These games put a nonhuman creature at the center of the action. Some focus on hunting people; others lean into destruction or fighting.
1. Carrion
Carrion is the strongest fit for reverse horror. You play an amorphous creature trapped in a secret underground laboratory, escaping through it while stalking and consuming the people who captured you. The creature grows and gains abilities as it progresses. Steam describes the game as reverse horror, and PlayStation’s game page outlines the lab escape and progression. It suits players who want to be the monster in a tense, side-scrolling action game rather than simply select one in a roster.
2. Maneater
Maneater is an adjacent creature fantasy: you control a shark rather than a humanoid monster. It is repeatedly suggested alongside monster-player games, including in a gaming-suggestions discussion and a Steam community group. Those recommendations establish its fit as a reader-facing suggestion, but do not specify a particular edition or platform. Check the platform store for the version you intend to play.

3. Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee
This is a monster-fighting option rather than a story about one creature escaping or hunting humans. A 2014 TIME feature on the appeal of playing as the hunted monster names Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee as an earlier example in the broader monster-game lineage. Expect the central appeal to be controlling a giant monster in combat; the cited feature does not establish current platform availability.
4. Rampage World Tour
Rampage World Tour offers the monster-destruction side of the category: the point is to play as a monster causing havoc, not to survive an encounter with one. TIME also cites it as an earlier example of games that let players inhabit the monster role. The article is historical context, not a current listing, so check platform availability before seeking out a copy.

Aliens, villains, and monster-like heroes
These games deliver some of the power fantasy of being the threat, but their protagonists are not all literal monsters.
5. Destroy All Humans!
In Destroy All Humans!, you play as Crypto-137, an alien invading Earth. The fantasy is gleefully villainous: terrorize humans with alien weapons and psychic powers. That makes it a good pick if “playing as the monster” means being the invading menace, rather than controlling a creature in a horror setting. THQ Nordic’s game page and Nintendo’s Switch listing describe the alien premise; Nintendo identifies the Switch edition on that page as digital.

6. Alien vs. Predator
Alien vs. Predator is a franchise recommendation, not one unambiguous game edition. TIME includes it among earlier examples relevant to the monster-player fantasy, and players mention it in the same kind of recommendation discussion. The franchise’s appeal for this list is its alien and Predator perspectives, but the cited sources do not establish which installment, campaigns, or platforms are available now. Choose a specific game only after checking its own store or official page for the playable roles it includes.
7. Prototype
Prototype is best treated as monster-adjacent action, not a straightforward creature protagonist game. It appears in reader and community recommendations, but those suggestions do not verify a particular installment or explain its playable abilities. If you want a human-shaped protagonist with a monstrous, shapeshifting premise, it may fit the mood; if you specifically want to control a literal creature, start with Carrion instead.

8. Stubbs the Zombie in Rebel Without a Pulse
This is the undead-comedy branch of the idea: a zombie protagonist rather than a creature stalking a lab or an alien invading Earth. It is a natural recommendation for players who want a comic undead perspective, but the available sources here do not verify its current platforms or edition details. Check the store listing for your system before buying.
9. Overlord
Overlord fits if the appeal is being the villain. It is a villain-protagonist suggestion rather than a verified literal-monster pick, and the sources cited here do not establish the details of a particular game or edition. Consider it when you want a dark-fantasy power fantasy; look elsewhere if your main requirement is playing as a nonhuman creature throughout.

A monster role in a hunt
10. Evolve
Evolve makes the monster one side of a competitive hunt: one player inhabits the hunted monster while others pursue it. That is a different commitment from a single-player creature protagonist, but it directly explores the appeal of being the target that hunters are trying to bring down. TIME’s feature discusses this monster-versus-hunters framing and uses it to connect the game to earlier monster-player examples. The cited coverage does not establish current matchmaking or platform availability, so verify those details before planning to play online.
Which kind of monster game should you choose?
| Game | Who you play | Core appeal | How directly it fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carrion | Amorphous creature | Escape, stalk, consume, and grow | Direct creature protagonist |
| Maneater | Shark | Creature-led action | Adjacent animal-creature fantasy |
| Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee | Giant monster | Monster combat | Monster fighting roster |
| Rampage World Tour | Monster | Destruction | Direct monster fantasy |
| Destroy All Humans! | Alien invader | Attack humans with weapons and psychic powers | Alien-villain power fantasy |
| Alien vs. Predator | Alien or Predator, depending on installment | Franchise perspectives | Specific roles depend on the game |
| Prototype | Monster-adjacent protagonist | Shapeshifting action premise | Qualified fit; details depend on installment |
| Stubbs the Zombie in Rebel Without a Pulse | Zombie | Undead comedy | Undead protagonist |
| Overlord | Villain protagonist | Dark-fantasy villainy | Villain role, not established here as a literal monster |
| Evolve | Monster in a competitive hunt | Be hunted by other players | Selectable competitive role |
For the most literal reverse-horror experience, choose Carrion. For an alien invasion fantasy, choose Destroy All Humans!. If you want a multiplayer monster role rather than a creature-led campaign, Evolve is the closest match in this list, subject to checking whether its online features are available for your platform.
