There is no universal best loot system: the thrill might come from a rare weapon drop, equipment that transforms a build, or materials earned through a challenging hunt. These 10 games offer different versions of that payoff, but the strongest recommendations depend on how much you enjoy randomness, repetition, and managing gear.
How to choose a loot system
Before picking a game, consider four questions: Do you want drops to feel unusual, or do you prefer steady upgrades? Should new equipment change your playstyle? Do you want to influence rewards through skill and crafting, or leave more to chance? And how much repeated farming and inventory management are you willing to do?
The games below are grouped by the kind of reward loop they offer, not ranked as a universal top ten. Current balance and reward details can change with updates, so the descriptions focus on each game’s broad appeal rather than promises about specific drop rates or endgame rewards.
Randomized drops and build progression
1. Borderlands 4
Borderlands is a natural pick if the excitement of finding a surprising weapon is central to your idea of good loot. Its design aims to pair immediate shooter action with longer-term character growth. As Gearbox founder and Borderlands creator Randy Pitchford put it, “Let’s blend the moment-to-moment fun of a shooter with the long-term, compelling feelings that we get from the growth and progression of role-playing games,” in an Epic Games Store interview.

- Loot is a captivating card game of who rules the high seas from Reiner Knizia.
- Storm your opponents' merchant ships and seize valuable treasure.
- But watch your back, matey - plundering pirates are also out to capture your loot. Yo-ho-ho and a barrel of fun!
- The goal of the game is to be the pirate with the most plunder (gold) at the end of the game, which is decided by the deck being depleted and one player has no cards.
- Includes 78 cards of trading ships, pirate ships, captains, and an admiral.
That combination suits players who enjoy trying new gear as they progress, rather than treating loot as a simple checklist of incremental upgrades. Borderlands Support said its January 15, 2026 update aimed to make drops feel like meaningful increases, and its notes referenced Moxxi’s Big Encore and Ultimate Vault Hunter modes. That is a useful reminder that even a loot-heavy game has to work at making rewards feel worthwhile.
2. Diablo IV
Diablo IV is a fit for players who want loot tied closely to character progression in an action RPG. Legendary loot is part of the game’s appeal, as noted in PlayStation’s overview of looter shooters. It is worth considering if you prefer building a character around equipment rather than chasing shooter-style weapon finds.
The exact value of particular items and the shape of endgame rewards can shift with updates and seasons. Choose Diablo IV for the broad action-RPG loot loop, not on the assumption that a particular item, class setup, or seasonal system will remain unchanged.

3. Grim Dawn
Grim Dawn may appeal to players looking for an action-RPG-style equipment hunt and character progression. However, the available evidence does not establish its current item systems in enough detail to compare specific mechanics, drop rates, or endgame rewards. Treat it as a candidate to investigate if you want another action RPG, rather than a verified recommendation for a particular kind of loot chase.

4. Monster Hunter Wilds
Monster Hunter Wilds suits players who find rewards satisfying when they are tied to taking on formidable creatures and steadily developing a hunter. PlayStation identifies the game among relevant modern looter-shooter recommendations, though that broad genre label does not by itself establish its detailed reward mechanics. It is a promising choice if you want a hunt-and-collection progression loop rather than a stream of randomized guns.
Do not assume that a particular material, part-break, crafting, or drop-rate detail is guaranteed by that description; the cited source does not establish those specifics. Check the current official game information for the platform and version you plan to play.

5. Warframe
Warframe is worth considering if developing a character and unlocking its potential is the kind of long-term progression you enjoy. PlayStation describes players developing their Warframe and unlocking its potential in its looter-shooter overview. That points to a progression-centered appeal, rather than proving any one current method of earning a particular item.
If your decision depends on specific drop tables, relics, blueprints, or crafting steps, check current official Warframe information. Those details are not established by the cited overview and may be too specific to infer safely from a broad genre description.

6. Elden Ring
Elden Ring is a possible choice for players who connect equipment rewards with exploration and overcoming difficult encounters. The available evidence here does not verify its present loot mechanics or establish which kinds of discoveries are most rewarding, so consider it a direction to explore rather than a fully substantiated loot-system recommendation.

7. Nioh 2
Nioh 2 is another possible fit if you want equipment collection alongside demanding action. Its inclusion in a list of candidates is not enough to establish specific current itemization details or the amount of grinding involved. Look into the current edition and its reward loop before choosing it specifically for loot.

8. Destiny 2
Destiny 2 illustrates the tension between rare rewards and a grind that feels meaningful. In a September 9, 2024 article, Bungie acknowledged that earlier reward experiences could be shallow and unsatisfying, concentrated in too few activities, and too dependent on luck rather than skill or mastery. Bungie said it would rework rewards across core, expansion, and event activities in its reward-design article.
That article describes an intended change, not a guarantee of Destiny 2’s live reward system in 2026. The game’s appeal is its evolving activity-and-reward loop, but players should check current Bungie information before choosing it based on a particular activity’s loot or reward rules.

9. The Division
The Division is a possible option for players who want a loot-focused action game, but the evidence available does not establish which installment or current version is meant, or support claims about its present gear systems. Check the exact game and edition before weighing it against other entries; a series name alone is not a reliable guide to the reward loop you will get.
10. Path of Exile
Path of Exile is a candidate for players seeking an action-RPG reward chase, but the available evidence does not establish current mechanics, version-specific differences, or how much repetition its loop requires. Before committing, verify the current game information and decide whether its particular progression and item systems match the amount of complexity you want.
Which game should you start with?
- For the thrill of finding a new weapon: Start with Borderlands 4, whose design explicitly blends shooter play with longer-term RPG progression.
- For character progression through loot: Consider Diablo IV or Warframe, while checking current official details if a specific mechanic matters to you.
- For rewards connected to hunts: Look at Monster Hunter Wilds, bearing in mind that broad recommendations do not verify individual material or crafting mechanics.
- For an activity-based reward chase that evolves: Destiny 2 is worth considering, but its 2024 design discussion should not be mistaken for a description of the 2026 live game.
- For any of the other candidates: Confirm the exact installment, edition, and current systems before deciding. The available descriptions do not establish detailed, up-to-date comparisons for Grim Dawn, Elden Ring, Nioh 2, The Division, or Path of Exile.
More drops do not automatically mean better loot. The satisfying system is the one that makes rewards feel distinct and useful to you, while asking for a level of randomness, repetition, and gear management you actually enjoy.
