For the classic PC version of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, the most useful mods depend on what you want to change: fix issues, support widescreen displays, add scripts, or overhaul the visuals and world. These ten are worthwhile options, not a tested ranking, and they are not meant to be installed as one bundle. The title’s “2025” framing is retained here as a search topic; details were checked in October 2026, including guides updated after 2025.
Which GTA San Andreas mods should you try?
Start with the changes closest to your goal. SilentPatch and Widescreen Fix suit players who want practical improvements without rebuilding the game’s look. CLEO and ModLoader support script-based customization. SkyGfx, Project 2DFX, RoSA Project Evolved, and Project Urbanize make more visible changes; some require supporting tools.

SilentPatch: keep the game close to its original design
SilentPatch provides fixes and quality improvements for the 3D-era GTA games, including San Andreas. Its project says it does not alter core gameplay, making it a sensible starting point if you want improvements without a broad visual or content overhaul.
#1 Best Overall
- Classic Open-World Adventure: Experience the iconic story of Carl Johnson as he returns to Los Santos, navigating through gang warfare, corruption, and family drama in this legendary action-adventure game set in early 1990s California
- Massive Explorable Territory: Roam freely across three distinct cities and vast countryside areas, featuring diverse landscapes from urban streets to rural farmlands, deserts, and mountain ranges with endless opportunities for exploration
- Enhanced Xbox 360 Performance: Enjoy improved graphics, smoother gameplay, and enhanced visual details optimized for Xbox 360 hardware, bringing the sprawling world of San Andreas to life with better rendering and performance
- Extensive Customization Options: Personalize your character's appearance with numerous clothing options, hairstyles, and tattoos while also customizing vehicles and building CJ's skills through various activities including gym workouts and driving challenges
- Diverse Gameplay Activities: Engage in a wide variety of missions and side activities including street racing, casino games, property acquisition, gang territory control, and numerous mini-games that provide hours of entertainment beyond the main storyline
Widescreen Fix: adapt the presentation to modern screens
The community guide describes Widescreen Fix as adjusting the game, camera, subtitles, HUD, and radar for widescreen displays. The LibertyCity listing warns that it may cause SAMP issues and suggests trying an earlier version if problems occur. That is a listing-specific suggestion, not a guarantee that an older version will resolve every setup.
Framerate Vigilante: a frame-rate-related option
Framerate Vigilante appears in the LibertyCity essentials collection. That listing does not establish its exact behavior or show a measured performance gain, so check the mod’s own current instructions before installing it rather than expecting a particular FPS improvement.
Tools for scripts and file-based mods
CLEO: add scripts with different behaviors
CLEO is a scripting plugin used by third-party mods to add or change gameplay behavior. CLEO 5 requires an ASI Loader. Its README says the bundled loader replaces vorbisFile.dll; back up that file before installation, then check for the CLEO indicator on the game’s main menu to verify that CLEO loaded.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteScripts are made by different authors and can have different game-version or mod requirements. If the game will not start, check the relevant version guidance; if it crashes after adding a script, isolate that script before troubleshooting the rest of the setup. CLEO’s documentation covers installation and troubleshooting.
Rank #3
- Five years ago Carl Johnson escaped from the pressures of life in Los Santos, San Andreas... a city tearing itself apart with gang trouble, drugs and corruption. Where filmstars and millionaires do their best to avoid the dealers and gangbangers.
- Now, it's the early 90s. Carl's got to go home. His mother has been murdered, his family has fallen apart and his childhood friends are all heading towards disaster.
- On his return to the neighborhood, a couple of corrupt cops frame him for homicide. CJ is forced on a journey that takes him across the entire state of San Andreas, to save his family and to take control of the streets.
ModLoader: keep file-based changes separated
ModLoader can keep many file-based mods in separate folders rather than requiring you to merge every change directly into the game files. CLEO’s documentation also says CLEO scripts can be installed in ModLoader folders, but warns that some scripts may not work properly that way. Follow each script’s instructions; if one fails through ModLoader, move it to the CLEO folder as a troubleshooting step.
Visual changes: choose the look you want
SkyGfx: bring the PC version closer to the PS2 look
SkyGfx aims to bring accurate PS2-style graphics to the PC version. It is a matter of taste, not a universal graphical upgrade: choose it if you prefer that presentation rather than assuming every player will find it better.
Rank #4
- Drive through the largest GTA environment ever -- The game has three cities players can explore, for a gaming area 5 times larger than Vice City
- Recruit new characters into a street gang and take over by leading drive-by shootings against rivals Steal all-new vehicles, including bicycles
- Improved fighting elements -- smoother hand-to-hand combat, plus the ability to hold a weapon in each hand
- New graphics elements as cars get dirty and even rust, the longer you drive them
- Advanced role-playing elements -- Unlike previous GTA characters, Carl can swim and he needs to eat to survive
Project 2DFX: extend visible distance and lighting
The community guide describes Project 2DFX as improving the draw distance of map details and lights. The guide lists Open Limit Adjuster as a requirement already included with the mod. Check the package’s current instructions before installing, since dependencies and versions can change.

RoSA Project Evolved remasters game textures in HD, making it a larger visual change than a fix or display adjustment. The community guide lists Open Limit Adjuster as required. Use it if you want a texture overhaul, and confirm the current package requirements before combining it with other visual mods.
Best Value
- Grand Theft Auto III: It all starts in Liberty City. With the revolutionary freedom to go anywhere and jack anyone, Grand Theft Auto III puts the center of the criminal underworld at your fingertips, if you have enough guts to take it.
- Grand Theft Auto: Vice City: Welcome to the 1980s. From the decade of big hair and pastel suits comes the story of one man's rise to the top of the criminal pile.
- Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: Five years ago, Carl ‘CJ’ Johnson escaped the haze of Los Santos, San Andreas...a city tearing itself apart with gang trouble, drugs, and corruption.
World changes and supporting utilities
Project Urbanize: add activity and objects
The community guide describes Project Urbanize as adding pedestrians, animations, and objects. It lists CLEO+ and Open Limit Adjuster as requirements. Because this adds content and depends on other components, follow the author’s installation order and instructions rather than treating it like a standalone cosmetic tweak.
Open Limit Adjuster: install when a chosen mod needs it
Open Limit Adjuster supports larger setups and is listed by the guide as a requirement for RoSA Project Evolved, Project Urbanize, and Project 2DFX. It is a supporting utility rather than a mod that visibly changes gameplay on its own. Install it when required by the mods you select, and check the current package instructions.
How to build a compatible mod setup
- Choose one goal first. Decide whether you want fixes, widescreen support, scripts, a particular graphics style, longer draw distance, new textures, or more world activity. Avoid installing all ten simply because they are listed together.
- Check your game and multiplayer setup. Confirm that each mod supports your PC game version and consider any multiplayer tools you use. The Essentials listing specifically flags a possible Widescreen Fix and SAMP issue.
- Read current requirements for each package. Use the project or author’s installation notes; community-guide dependencies are a starting point and may change as versions change.
- Back up files before adding loaders or replacing game files. For CLEO 5 in particular, preserve
vorbisFile.dllbefore installing its ASI Loader. - Add components in small groups and check the result. Verify CLEO using its main-menu indicator. If a script causes trouble, test it separately and check whether it needs to be moved from a ModLoader folder to the CLEO folder.
- Keep a rollback path. Retain your backup and make note of which components you added so you can remove a problem mod without rebuilding the entire setup.
The recommendations here are based on project documentation, the LibertyCity essentials collection, and the community guide. They do not establish a universal compatibility order, comparative stability, or measured performance advantage.
