I’m ranking recognizable looks by how clearly they signal a particular version of Leon, how distinct they are from his other costumes, and how strongly they endure across the series. The list is selective, not a definitive catalog of every outfit he has worn.

1. Resident Evil 4’s brown-jacket look
The brown leather jacket is the defining first impression of Leon’s Resident Evil 4 appearance: a broad, rugged silhouette that stands apart from his more uniform-like R.P.D. gear. It suggests a seasoned agent without making him look like a faceless soldier. Its strong outline and association with the game’s opening stretch make it the most instantly legible Leon look on this list.
2. The original Resident Evil 2 R.P.D. rookie uniform
Leon’s police uniform is inseparable from his rookie introduction. The outfit tells the story before he says a word: he is a new officer arriving in Raccoon City, badly outmatched by what he finds. The practical uniform is less visually flamboyant than later alternatives, but that character-and-story connection gives it lasting recognition.

3. Resident Evil 4’s jacketless shirt phase
After the brown jacket is gone, Leon’s fitted shirt and tactical gear keep the same capable-agent silhouette while making him look more battle-worn. This is a subtler design than the jacket, but it earns its place by showing the outfit evolve with the action rather than treating Leon’s look as a static costume.
4. The original 1998 low-polygon R.P.D. look
This version matters both as a snapshot of Leon’s first appearance and as an explicit nostalgia costume. Steam’s official listing says it changes Leon to his “original 1998 low-polygon visual look.” Its blockier proportions are less about realistic uniform detail than instantly recalling the original game.

5. The Resident Evil 4 gangster suit
A pinstripe suit and fedora turn Leon into a deliberate genre change: less field agent, more old-school gangster. The Resident Evil 4 official guide describes a gangster suit with fedora as a special Leon costume and suggests pairing it with the Chicago Typewriter. That is historical guide evidence for the costume, not confirmation that the same unlock appears in every later edition.
6. The Resident Evil 2 remake R.P.D. uniform
The remake’s uniform preserves the rookie-police identity while giving it a grounded, contemporary treatment. Capcom said the team aimed for a “fresh-faced rookie look.” Associate Manager Social Media Kellen Haney explained in a July 20, 2018 PlayStation Blog report: “As a result, the team created a physical version of Leon’s costume, using photogrammetry technology to scan his clothes into the game and added minor details and changes afterwards.” That attention to a physical costume helps the remake’s version feel tangible without losing the original design’s story role.

7. Resident Evil 2’s Noir costume
The Noir costume replaces tactical practicality with a film-noir-inspired look. Its appeal is not that it feels like the most plausible outfit for the scenario; it is that the sharp change in style is immediately recognizable. The Steam listing and PlayStation Store listing describe the costume as film-noir-inspired and note that it can be paired with a black-and-white filter.
8. The Arklay Sheriff costume
The Arklay Sheriff outfit is an official alternate named in Capcom’s 2018 Resident Evil 2 Collector’s Edition announcement. As a costume concept, it pushes Leon away from the rookie officer silhouette toward a more rugged lawman look. It is distinctive, though its impact depends more on the alternate styling than on a defining story moment.

9. Resident Evil 4’s Hero costume
The Hero costume leans into a larger-than-life action-hero aesthetic rather than Leon’s grounded field gear. Its official PlayStation Store listing says it can be used in the main story and Separate Ways; the listing specifies that its filter is limited to the main story. It was released March 24, 2023, for PS4 and PS5, with Capcom U.S.A. named as publisher. Availability can differ by platform and region, so check the relevant store listing for the edition you play.
10. The classic R.P.D. uniform as a Resident Evil 4 unlock
The 2005 Resident Evil 4 official guide also documents a classic Raccoon Police Department uniform as a special Leon costume. Its presence carries the rookie design into a later, very different game era, making it a neat bridge between Leon’s introduction and his more seasoned-agent identity. The guide establishes this historical costume, not its availability in every subsequent version.

For a single signature look, the brown jacket wins on silhouette and association with Resident Evil 4. For the clearest character introduction, the R.P.D. uniform is the stronger choice: both the original and remake versions make Leon’s rookie status part of the design. The Noir and gangster looks rank lower as story fits, but their sharp departures from tactical gear make them especially memorable alternates.
What the official listings establish—and what they don’t
Capcom and storefront materials verify several costume names and appearances, while the 2005 guide records two historical Resident Evil 4 unlocks. They do not establish a complete franchise wardrobe, a universal ranking, or which outfits fans prefer. Store listings are also platform- and region-specific; check your edition before assuming a costume is available.
