There is no official ranking of the Ninja Gaiden series, and comparing its arcade and 2D platform-action roots directly with its 3D action games is imperfect. This is an editorial ranking based on combat depth and responsiveness, encounter and level design, replay value, historical influence, version quality, and how welcoming each game is to a new player. Version names matter: several entries are substantially different editions of the same game.

For most newcomers interested in modern action, start with Ninja Gaiden: Master Collection for three later entries, or choose Ninja Gaiden 2 Black for a remaster of the 2008 sequel. Neither covers the entire series. Here is how ten notable games and versions stack up.

10. Ninja Gaiden III: The Ancient Ship of Doom

The third NES-era adventure earns a place for showing how the original side-scrolling formula developed beyond its breakthrough first game. Its historical role gives it more significance than a simple nostalgia pick, but it sits last here because the modern entries offer more room for expressive combat and replay.

Tradeoff: Its 2D action makes it a different kind of challenge from the later 3D games; this ranking does not treat the two styles as interchangeable.

  • NINJA GAIDEN 4 fuses Team NINJA'S tempered combat philosophy with the stylish, dynamic action gameplay of PlatinumGames. Engage in visually stunning combat that rewards precision and strategy.
  • An endless rain of miasma hangs over a near-future Tokyo in the wake of an ancient enemy’s resurrection. The fate of the city lies in the hands of young ninja prodigy, Yakumo.

9. Ninja Gaiden II: The Dark Sword of Chaos

The second NES game is a strong choice for players who want the franchise’s classic platform-action style rather than its later close-quarters 3D combat. It ranks above the third classic entry for its place in the series’ early evolution, though its appeal is tied to that older format.

Tradeoff: Players seeking the modern series’ swordplay and 3D encounter design should begin elsewhere.

8. Ninja Gaiden (1988)

The original arcade game, known as Ninja Ryukenden in Japan and Ninja Gaiden internationally, launched the franchise in 1988. The series later moved across 2D and 3D forms, retaining the fast traversal, swordplay, ninjutsu, and demanding battles that Xbox Wire identifies as its defining traits (Xbox Wire’s series history).

Its influence earns it a position in the ten, but the arcade original is a historical starting point rather than the best entry point for every contemporary player.

Rank #2
Ninja Gaiden: Master Collection Trilogy (Nintendo Switch) [IMPORT] (Nintendo Switch)
  • Ninja Gaiden: Master Collection Trilogy (Nintendo Switch) [IMPORT]
  • The "Clan Battle" for "Shadows of the World" in NINJA GAIDEN 3 Razor's Edge is not included. Online multiplayer is not available for “Ninja Trials".
  • Included Titles All in 1 cartridge NINJA GAIDEN Sigma NINJA GAIDEN Sigma 2 NINJA GAIDEN 3: Razor's Edge
  • Included Titles All in 1 cartridge NINJA GAIDEN Sigma NINJA GAIDEN Sigma 2 NINJA GAIDEN 3: Razor's Edge

Tradeoff: The original arcade release and the later NES game called Ninja Gaiden are not the same version or experience.

7. Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor’s Edge

Razor’s Edge is the revised 2012 version of Ninja Gaiden 3, and the version included in Master Collection. It places higher than the original Ninja Gaiden 3 because the revised edition is the more relevant way for most players to approach that installment.

Tradeoff: It remains the third mainline 3D-era game in this ranking, behind entries that make a stronger overall case on combat and lasting appeal.

6. Ninja Gaiden 4

Released October 21, 2025, Ninja Gaiden 4 was co-developed by PlatinumGames and Team NINJA. It introduces Yakumo as a new protagonist while also making Ryu Hayabusa playable, giving the series a fresh lead without dropping its best-known ninja. Its lower-middle placement reflects the difficulty of weighing a new chapter against the established influence of the older standouts, not a claim that its release makes them obsolete.

Rank #3
PS4 - Ninja Gaiden: Master Collection
  • Enjoy 3 epic games from the NINJA GAIDEN series in this single collection - The nostalgic yet timeless high-speed action unfolds on the latest hardware, so prepare for vigorous battles with fearsome opponents!
  • Most of the previously downloadable contents are included! - Most of the previously released game modes and DLC costumes for each title are included in this thrilling collection. In addition to Ryu Hayabusa, each of the other characters will have a variety of costumes to choose from, allowing for action-packed battles in the outfit of your choice
  • Ayane, Rachel, Momiji, Kasumi playable! - Besides Ryu Hayabusa, the four iconic female characters; Ayane, Rachel, Momiji, Kasumi will be playable. Master your favorite characters in exciting battles

Tradeoff: The new protagonist is a change in emphasis for a series long associated with Ryu. Producer and director Yuji Nakao told Xbox Wire the team wanted “a new hero to make the series more approachable for new players” (Xbox Wire).

5. Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2

Sigma 2 is the 2009 version of Ninja Gaiden II included in Master Collection. It is a distinct release, not simply another name for the original 2008 game: critic comparisons describe differences in enemy numbers, balance, and the feel of its combat. It makes the top five as a substantial 3D action entry and as the version most readily available in the collection.

Tradeoff: Players seeking the original sequel’s more aggressive combat may prefer the 2008 release or the later Ninja Gaiden 2 Black. PC Gamer’s comparison argues that Sigma 2 differs from the original in enemy density and balance (PC Gamer).

4. Ninja Gaiden (2004)

The 2004 Xbox Ninja Gaiden was a major turning point in the franchise’s 3D era. Xbox Wire describes its controls and action as revolutionary; that is the publication’s characterization, but the game’s place as a defining shift from the 2D lineage is clear. Its combination of responsive action and demanding battles gives it a strong claim among the series’ best.

Rank #4
Ninja Gaiden (Renewed)
  • Become a one-man assault team, fighting the army of the so-called Holy Emperor to reclaim the magic sword stolen from your lineage
  • Learn to fight like a ninja master - Fast, intuitive controls make learning deadly fighting combos quick -- you can even develop your own combos

  • Draw from a well of Ninpo(ninja magic) to enhance your powers -- vaporize opponents or use it strategically, upgrading to make unstoppable combat spells
  • Amazing visual effects suck you into the battles - realistic combat combined with beautiful, detailed graphics

Tradeoff: The original 2004 release is not the same version as Ninja Gaiden Black or Ninja Gaiden Sigma; check which edition you are choosing rather than assuming the names are interchangeable.

3. Ninja Gaiden Sigma

Released in 2007, Sigma is a later version of the 2004 game and the version included in Master Collection. It retains the core appeal of the 3D reboot while offering a practical route to play that chapter on modern platforms. Its high placement reflects the strength of the underlying game and the accessibility of this edition.

Tradeoff: Players comparing it with the Xbox original or Black should treat them as separate versions, not assume that a collection’s edition is automatically the definitive one.

2. Ninja Gaiden 2 Black

Released January 23, 2025, Ninja Gaiden 2 Black is a remaster of the 2008 sequel, not a new title and not the same release as Sigma 2. PC Gamer considers it closer to the original’s aggressive combat than Sigma 2, while also judging that it does not fully restore the original’s enemy numbers and balance. That makes it a useful modern option for players drawn to the 2008 game’s intensity, while its position just below the original reflects that distinction.

Tradeoff: “Black” does not mean an untouched reissue of the 2008 version; the comparison depends on what aspect of the original matters to you (PC Gamer’s comparison).

1. Ninja Gaiden II (2008)

The original 2008 Ninja Gaiden II takes the top spot for the series’ 3D action at its most aggressive and demanding. Its combat identity is the standard that makes the distinctions among the original, Sigma 2, and Black important. PC Gamer’s headline calls the game “untouchable,” a critic’s emphatic opinion rather than a universal verdict; it captures why this version remains a compelling benchmark for the franchise.

Tradeoff: The original is not the version bundled in Master Collection, and players who prioritize a current remaster may prefer Ninja Gaiden 2 Black.

Which Ninja Gaiden should you play first?

  • For three modern entries in one package: Choose NINJA GAIDEN: Master Collection. It includes Sigma, Sigma 2, and Razor’s Edge, not the full series or the original versions of every game. KOEI TECMO America says it launched June 10, 2021, for Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and Steam, with backward compatibility on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S (KOEI TECMO America).
  • For the 2008 sequel’s combat in a 2025 remaster: Choose Ninja Gaiden 2 Black. The official portal lists Xbox Series X|S, Microsoft Store, Steam, and PS5 (Team NINJA’s official page).
  • For the newest chapter: Choose Ninja Gaiden 4, released October 21, 2025, for Game Pass, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PS5; its publisher is Xbox Game Studios and its developers are PlatinumGames and Team NINJA (PlatinumGames).
  • For the franchise’s roots: Start with the 1988 arcade game if you want the historical origin, or explore the NES-era 2D entries for the classic platform-action branch.

How to read the ranking

The series has sold “over 7.5 million units worldwide,” according to Team NINJA and KOEI TECMO’s official portal, which gives no publication year for that figure (Team NINJA series portal). That milestone speaks to the franchise’s longevity, not to any official ordering of its games.

Critic scores can help frame the conversation but do not settle a cross-generation ranking. GamesRadar+ published a Metacritic score snapshot for several entries, including Ninja Gaiden 4 at 83 and the original Ninja Gaiden at 91; those are values reported by its article at publication time, not a live or independently confirmed scorecard (GamesRadar+). This list instead weighs the games’ version differences, historical roles, action design, and value to a new player.
