10 PS2 Games Worth Replaying for Different Reasons

These ten PS2 picks offer different reasons to return, from Gran Turismo 4’s varied racing modes to local two-player play and story-led campaigns.

There is no measured, definitive ranking of the PlayStation 2 library by replay value. This editorial shortlist instead picks ten games that invite a return in different ways: varied racing, open-ended activity, additional modes, repeat challenges, or another story run. Gran Turismo 4 has the clearest documented case for varied play; the other entries are best understood as genre-specific recommendations, not a ranked comparison.

How to read this list

Replay value means different things across genres. A racer can offer more events and reasons to revisit a race; an open-world game can make it easy to return to activities beyond the main story; a story-led game may be worth another full run. The order below is editorial, not a score or a claim that one game objectively lasts longer than another.

For several games in this slate, the available PlayStation history page establishes their place in the PS2 era but does not document a replay-value ranking or every feature described by later coverage. The entries therefore avoid unsupported feature-by-feature claims.

10 PS2 games with reasons to return

1. Gran Turismo 4

Gran Turismo 4 is the strongest documented replay pick here. Its official product page calls it “Packed with more cars, courses, and race modes” and describes a “Refined replay mode with broadcast-quality graphics.” Those are promotional descriptions from the product page, but they point to a clear mix of race variety and the pleasure of revisiting a run. The same page identifies it as a PlayStation 2 exclusive and lists B-Spec; PlayStation’s history page also highlights B-Spec and photo mode. Pac Man World 2 - PlayStation 2 (Renewed)
  • Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
  • This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.

Sony’s North American launch announcement gives the US release date as February 22, 2005, and says players could save in-game photos to a PS2 memory card or USB key. That is a period-specific detail, not a guarantee that every modern setup can use the same accessories. Sony’s launch announcement.

2. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

San Andreas suits players who want a game to return to between story missions, rather than a title built around a single repeatable event format. The PlayStation Store listing is for a PS4 conversion of the original PS2 game, and warns that it may play differently or that some features may not function properly. It should not be used as evidence that the current conversion is identical to the PS2 disc. If you want the PS2 edition, check that a listing is actually for that version. PlayStation Store listing.

Rank #2
Grand Theft Auto San Andreas
  • Drive through the largest GTA environment ever -- The game has three cities players can explore, for a gaming area 5 times larger than Vice City
  • Recruit new characters into a street gang and take over by leading drive-by shootings against rivals Steal all-new vehicles, including bicycles
  • Improved fighting elements -- smoother hand-to-hand combat, plus the ability to hold a weapon in each hand
  • New graphics elements as cars get dirty and even rust, the longer you drive them
  • Advanced role-playing elements -- Unlike previous GTA characters, Carl can swim and he needs to eat to survive

3. Final Fantasy X

Final Fantasy X is a story-led choice for players whose reason to replay is returning to a full narrative rather than dipping into short standalone rounds. PlayStation’s Japanese PS2 history page identifies it as a representative title and describes its story premise, but does not establish a comparative replay ranking or document additional completion paths. 4. Tony Hawk’s Underground

Tony Hawk’s Underground earns a place for readers drawn to a skating game with a free-roaming direction and story elements. GamesRadar+ includes it in its July 2026 retrospective of the best PS2 games. That supports its historical standing, but the cited retrospective is editorial coverage rather than primary documentation of every mode or replay feature. GamesRadar+’s PS2 retrospective.

Rank #3
Capcom Classics Collection
  • Capcom Classics Collection includes the following features -
  • Experience more than 20 groundbreaking and revolutionary games of their time on one disk
  • Hundreds of hours of nostalgic gameplay
  • Enjoy a wealth of added features including original artwork, remixed music and playing tips

5. Dynasty Warriors 2

Dynasty Warriors 2 has a documented reason to revisit it with someone else: PlayStation’s history page says it supports two players and includes added game modes. That makes it a useful pick for players who value local play and more than one mode, although the page does not describe those modes in enough detail to compare their depth with other games here. PlayStation’s PS2 history.

6. ICO

ICO is a story-focused recommendation for players who are willing to replay a complete adventure rather than chase a long list of separately documented modes. PlayStation’s history page names it among representative PS2 games; the available source does not make a specific claim about alternate routes, optional goals, or multiplayer. Rank #4
Medal of Honor Frontline - PlayStation 2 (Renewed)
  • Jimmy has been sent back behind enemy lines to steal the HO-IX flying wing, an experimental Nazi weapon
  • To get it, you'll have to survive six major missions and 20 unique levels of gameplay
  • There's all-new non-player character animations, with superior 3D details -- even full facial expressions and lip synchs
  • Use 20 authentic WWII weapons, from a Colt. 45 pistol to a German Panzerschrenk rocket launcher
  • You can even drive vehicles like the motorized rail car, train, and mine cart

7. Shadow of the Colossus

Shadow of the Colossus is another single-adventure pick: it belongs on a replay list for players who want to return to a complete, focused experience. PlayStation’s history page confirms its place among notable PS2 releases but does not establish a particular completion system or replay ranking, so this recommendation is about the appeal of revisiting a story-led game rather than a sourced claim about extra modes. 8. Kingdom Hearts II

Kingdom Hearts II is a fit for players who enjoy returning to a substantial story-led game. PlayStation’s PS2 history page names it as representative of the console’s library, but the source does not provide comparative data on its replay length or optional content. PlayStation’s PS2 history.

9. Need for Speed Underground 2

Need for Speed Underground 2 is included as a racing-game candidate for players who would rather revisit a driving title than a narrative campaign. The available sales-list excerpt establishes only that the game appears among top-selling PS2 titles; it does not verify modes, replay features, or current availability. Treat its inclusion here as an editorial genre pick, not a conclusion drawn from sales. Industry console-sales PDF.

10. Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty rounds out the list as a story-led PS2 candidate for players who enjoy revisiting a campaign. The available sales-list excerpt records it among top-selling PS2 games, but sales are not evidence of replay value or a particular feature set. Industry console-sales PDF.

A story-led game to return to Final Fantasy X, ICO, Shadow of the Colossus, or Kingdom Hearts II PlayStation’s history page names these titles, but does not rank their replay value.
Open-world activity or a skating game with a free-roaming direction Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas or Tony Hawk’s Underground The cited San Andreas page is a PS4 conversion listing with a feature-parity warning; GamesRadar+ describes Underground’s free-roaming direction and story elements.
A racing or action campaign to revisit Need for Speed Underground 2 or Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty The cited sales-list excerpt establishes inclusion among top-selling PS2 games only, not specific replay features.

Check the edition before buying

These recommendations concern PS2 games, but a modern listing may refer to a conversion rather than the original disc. The San Andreas PlayStation Store listing explicitly identifies a PS4 conversion and warns that it may differ from the PS2 version. For a physical PS2 copy, confirm the listing names the PS2 edition and check its region and disc condition. Current stock, price, and condition vary by seller.
