10 Revolutionary Shooters That Shaped the Genre

Ten shooters, ten different kinds of influence: trace the genre from Maze War’s early precedent to the multiplayer, console and modding milestones that followed.

The most influential shooters did more than make aiming feel good: they established the genre’s early conventions, made multiplayer a defining feature, brought first-person action to consoles, and showed how story, modding and team roles could reshape play. This editorial selection follows those different kinds of influence; it is not a definitive ranking or a verified reproduction of another outlet’s list.

How did the first shooters become a popular genre?

“First” and “most influential” are different claims. Guinness World Records identifies Maze War, developed beginning in 1973, as the first first-person shooter. It began as a maze-navigation game and later added player-versus-player shooting, but its availability on specialist computers limited its direct reach. Guinness World Records’ history of the first FPS makes that distinction important: historical priority did not automatically mean broad popular influence.

The wider audience came later. Wolfenstein 3D helped popularize fast first-person action, and DOOM pushed it further into the mainstream. The ten games below are arranged roughly by release chronology, with each included for a different contribution rather than as a claim that one single design defines the genre.

Which 10 shooters changed what the genre could be?

1. Maze War (begun in 1973): an early foundation

Maze War earns its place for establishing the historical precedent: a first-person view, maze navigation and, later, shooting against another player. Guinness identifies it as the first FPS, while noting that the specialist systems it ran on constrained its reach. Its importance is therefore foundational, not a claim that it directly shaped every later hit. Guinness World Records

2. Wolfenstein 3D (1992): a fast, recognizable FPS formula

Wolfenstein 3D helped turn first-person shooting into a popular, action-led format. Xbox Wire describes conventions that became familiar across the genre: escalating weapons and enemies, secret areas, quick pacing and relatively little story. Its shareware distribution also helped the game reach players. It was a major popularizer, not the first FPS. Xbox Wire’s FPS history

3. DOOM (1993): multiplayer and modding become part of the legacy

DOOM carried the fast-action approach to a much wider audience, but its influence extends beyond its campaign. Bethesda’s id Software timeline credits it with pioneering local and online multiplayer deathmatches and community modding. Those additions helped make a shooter’s life beyond its original levels part of the genre’s culture. Bethesda/id Software’s timeline; Xbox Wire

  • Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort

4. Quake (1996): fully 3D spaces and organized competition

Quake marked a technical change from sprite-based imagery and simulated perspective to fully three-dimensional polygonal environments. Xbox Wire links that shift to larger, more vertical spaces, while both Xbox Wire and Bethesda connect the game’s multiplayer legacy to clans, tournaments and the growth of FPS esports. Its contribution was not just a new look: it helped make three-dimensional movement and organized competitive play central possibilities for shooters. Xbox Wire; Bethesda/id Software

5. GoldenEye 007 (1997): console-first FPS design

GoldenEye 007 showed how a 3D first-person shooter could work as a console-focused game. Its split-screen multiplayer brought local competition into the living room, and its design incorporated stealth as well as shooting. Xbox Wire also highlights differences in damage according to where enemies were hit; Guinness notes its sniper-rifle zoom scope. Together, those elements helped distinguish it from a simple translation of PC shooter conventions. Xbox Wire; Guinness World Records

6. Half-Life (1998): story and mod culture in the same engine

Half-Life integrated an elaborate plot into the shooter experience and drew attention to enemy AI, rather than treating narrative as a pause between fights. Its mod-friendly engine also had consequences beyond the game itself: Counter-Strike began as a modification made by independent developers, who were later hired by Valve. That path illustrates how a shooter’s tools and community can give rise to influential work of their own. Xbox Wire

7. Halo: Combat Evolved (2001): a console multiplayer benchmark

Released as a launch title for the original Xbox, Halo: Combat Evolved combined campaign storytelling, weapons, vehicles and enemy AI with competitive multiplayer. Guinness describes its multiplayer as a benchmark; Xbox Wire credits the game’s accessibility and presentation, alongside its storytelling and multiplayer, with helping secure the console’s success. Its influence lies in establishing a prominent console FPS model in which campaign and competition both mattered. Xbox Wire; Guinness World Records

8. Call of Duty (2003): the start of a major series

The original Call of Duty is the series’ starting point, rather than the game to credit for every later feature associated with the franchise. Activision dates its release to October 29, 2003. Xbox Wire’s account describes the series’ later move from World War II settings toward contemporary conflict, a shift that became especially visible with Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Activision’s franchise chronology; Xbox Wire

9. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (2007): a new framework for series multiplayer

Modern Warfare brought contemporary conflict to the series and introduced multiplayer systems that would become strongly associated with its identity. Activision lists Create-a-Class, perks, prestige, killstreaks and weapon camouflage among the game’s additions. Those systems made player loadout choices and progression an explicit part of the multiplayer structure. Activision’s anniversary account; Xbox Wire

10. Team Fortress 2: the character-based team shooter

A list focused only on technical milestones or blockbuster console releases would miss the distinct role of character-based team play. Guinness identifies Team Fortress 2 as an early character-based team FPS, making it a useful inclusion for the way it represents that multiplayer branch of the genre. The milestone record cited here does not specify a release year, so none is assigned. Guinness World Records

Are these the only shooters that belong on the list?

No. This is one defensible selection built around distinct kinds of influence, not a fixed canon. Guinness also identifies Far Cry as an early open-world FPS milestone, making it a credible alternative if the focus is level structure rather than character-based team multiplayer. The central historical distinction still holds: Maze War has the first-FPS claim, while later games such as Wolfenstein 3D and DOOM had wider popular impact.
