“Best” depends on what you want to customize. Some RPGs focus on appearance; others give you more freedom over builds, make identity affect roleplay, or let your character evolve throughout the game. This guide compares those four dimensions—but the available evidence supports detailed recommendations for only two games, not a reliable top ten.
How to judge character customization
- Visual control: How much can you shape your character’s face, body, voice, clothing, or other visible traits?
- Build freedom: How much choice do you have over classes, abilities, skills, and progression?
- Roleplay consequences: Do identity and character choices affect dialogue, NPC reactions, or the story?
- Customization after creation: Can your character’s build or identity continue to change as you play?
A player asking, “Games with the best character creation/customization?” might mean any of these. A Reddit discussion illustrates that people weigh appearance, builds, and in-game consequences differently; it is an example of individual opinion, not a consensus ranking (Reddit discussion).
1. Baldur’s Gate 3 — best for roleplay choices that matter
Strongest dimension: Roleplay consequences, with substantial build choices and a detailed appearance creator.
Character creation in Baldur’s Gate 3 goes well beyond looks. Larian’s Community Update #8 describes choices including race, subrace, background, class, abilities, skills, and appearance, and says those decisions can ripple into roleplay and how the world responds.

A September 2023 PlayStation Blog article by Larian Product Manager Emily Gera describes options including freckles, scars, individual eye colors, body type, gender, appearance, voice, and pronouns. The same dated article reports 12 classes, 11 races, 46 subclasses, and 12 backgrounds, plus over 200 dialogue responses tailored to the Duergar subclass. Those are figures reported in 2023, not verified current counts.
Best for: Players who want ancestry, background, and build choices to inform how they inhabit the story—not just how their character looks.

2. Dragon’s Dogma 2 — best for designing a companion too
Strongest dimension: Visual identity for both the player character and a key companion.
PlayStation’s Dragon’s Dogma 2 page describes a single-player, narrative-driven action RPG in which players can customize both the Arisen and their main Pawn. That gives character creation a companion-design angle as well as a player-character one.

Steam also lists a separate Dragon’s Dogma 2 Character Creator & Storage utility. Its listing says character data created there can transfer to the separately available base game. Check the current listing for availability and transfer details before relying on that workflow.
Best for: Players who want to shape a main companion alongside their own character. The cited information establishes the two-character creator angle, but does not support a broader comparison of its visual tools or progression options.

Why this is not a definitive top ten
Cyberpunk 2077, Elden Ring, Black Desert Online, Mass Effect, Dark Souls, Dragon’s Dogma, Final Fantasy XIV, and Divinity: Original Sin 2 surfaced as possible candidates in broader lists. That does not, by itself, establish each game’s current creator features or make them comparable on the four dimensions above. Rather than fill out ten entries with unsupported specifics, this list sticks to the two games for which the available material supports concrete claims.
