Several Nintendo Switch games have dedicated Nintendo Switch 2 Editions that improve image quality, performance or loading—or add substantial content and new ways to play. The strongest picks depend on what you value: sharper, smoother play; fresh modes and story content; or features such as mouse controls and expanded multiplayer. Here are 10 editions with specific benefits documented by Nintendo, plus what to know before buying.
Which games get the most meaningful Switch 2 upgrades?
Nintendo Switch 2 Editions vary: some focus on technical improvements, while others add content or play features. The specifications below are Nintendo’s published claims, not independent comparative tests, and “up to” figures are not guarantees that every scene or setup will reach a maximum.

Switch 2 Editions that prioritize smoother or sharper play
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom
Both Zelda editions target the same pain points: Nintendo lists improved frame rates and resolution, faster loading and HDR support for each. They also add ZELDA NOTES support through the Nintendo Switch App. If you spend most of your time exploring Hyrule, the technical changes are the main draw; ZELDA NOTES is an additional app-based feature rather than a new game campaign. See Nintendo’s Switch 2 enhanced games catalogue and UK edition listings.
Pokémon Legends: Z-A
Nintendo describes the Switch 2 Edition as having improved performance, higher resolution and smoother, higher frame rates. That makes this a straightforward technical upgrade rather than an edition defined by new story content. Nintendo’s support information says the upgrade requires the base game—physical or virtual—on the system. Check the edition listing for the title’s current purchase options.

#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
Metroid Prime 4: Beyond
Nintendo lists enhanced resolution, textures and loading times, as well as HDR and Joy-Con 2 mouse controls. Its two display modes make the trade-off unusually explicit:
| Mode | TV | Handheld |
|---|---|---|
| Quality | 4K at 60 fps | 1080p at 60 fps |
| Performance | 1080p at 120 fps | 720p at 120 fps |
These are Nintendo’s listed mode specifications, not independent test results. 4K output requires compatible equipment, and Nintendo says frame rates are capped at 60 fps for 4K output. The 120 fps TV mode requires a compatible 120 Hz display. If smooth motion is your priority, Performance Mode is the relevant option; if resolution matters more, choose Quality Mode. Details are in Nintendo’s edition catalogue and system features and play modes.
Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition
Nintendo lists 60 fps, 4K TV resolution and Full HD handheld resolution, along with smoother, sharper cutscenes, voiced Heart-to-Heart conversations and the Ether Jet feature. The listing gives June 9, 2026 as the edition’s release date. Nintendo caps the frame rate at 60 fps for 4K output, and 4K requires a compatible display. This is Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition, not Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition. Consult the Nintendo product listing for the edition’s details.
Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition
Nintendo UK lists enhanced TV resolution up to 4K and improved performance up to 60 fps. Those “up to” qualifications matter: the listing does not promise that every moment runs at the maximum. This is a separate game and edition from Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition; Nintendo UK’s Switch 2 Edition catalogue identifies it by its full title.

Editions that add new content or ways to play
Super Mario Party Jamboree – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Jamboree TV
Jamboree TV is the centerpiece, with modes that use mouse controls and a microphone. The edition also supports CameraPlay with a compatible USB camera, sold separately, and local multiplayer GameShare. Nintendo lists output of 1440p in TV mode and Full HD (1080p) in tabletop and handheld modes, alongside an improved frame rate. It is the most appealing pick here if your group will use its new party features; the camera is an extra purchase, not included. See Nintendo’s edition details for features and compatibility.
Kirby and the Forgotten Land – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Star-Crossed World
This edition adds the Star-Crossed World story and improves the frame rate. Nintendo’s announcement says the added content supports both single-player and local co-op, so it offers more than a technical refresh if you want another adventure with Kirby. The Nintendo catalogue lists the edition’s enhancements.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition
The edition improves resolution, up to 4K in TV mode, and adds mouse controls for decorating and Custom Designs. A megaphone feature uses the system microphone; CameraPlay adds camera functionality; and online sessions support up to 12 players when everyone is using the Switch 2 Edition. Nintendo announced the edition’s release for January 15, 2026. The online player count is conditional on all participants having that edition, not a general promise for mixed-version sessions. Read Nintendo’s announcement for the multiplayer qualification.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Meetup in Bellabel Park
Meetup in Bellabel Park adds minigames, challenges, collectibles and boss battles, with Rosalina as a playable character and co-op featuring Co-Star Luma. Nintendo also lists enhanced TV resolution up to 4K, GameShare support and mouse controls in multiplayer co-op. If you already know Wonder, the added park activities and characters are the core reason to consider this edition; the higher resolution is a secondary benefit. Nintendo describes the new area and gameplay in its announcement.

How to buy an edition if you already own the Switch game
A Switch 2 Edition bundles the original Switch game with its upgrade pack. If you already own the corresponding Switch game physically or digitally, Nintendo says you can buy the upgrade pack instead of buying the full edition again. Some upgrade packs are available at no additional cost to active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members who own the base game; eligibility and terms depend on the specific title and region. The edition’s added features and content require Nintendo Switch 2. Check Nintendo’s edition and upgrade-pack information before purchasing.
- Confirm the exact game and edition. Look for “Nintendo Switch 2 Edition” in a digital title. Nintendo says physical packaging shows the Switch 2 logo on the front.
- Check whether you own the base game. If you do, look for that game’s upgrade pack rather than buying the bundled full edition again.
- Check membership and regional terms. An eligible Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership may cover some upgrade packs at no additional cost, but not every title or region has the same terms.
- Match the benefit to your setup. For features such as 4K or 120 Hz output, verify that your display and connection support the mode Nintendo lists.
Other Switch 2 releases and updates are different categories
Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition is a notable Switch 2 release, but it is not an enhanced version of an earlier Switch game: CD PROJEKT RED says it is the first time the title is available to Nintendo players. The physical 64 GB game card or digital edition includes the base game and Phantom Liberty, with gyro aiming, motion controls, touchscreen commands and Joy-Con 2 mouse controls. See the publisher’s announcement.
Nintendo also offers free Switch 2 updates for selected earlier games, including Pokémon Scarlet, Pokémon Violet and The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom. These are separate from paid Switch 2 Editions, and Nintendo says the update contents differ by game. Its free update announcement lists examples.
Will every Switch game look or run better on Switch 2?
No. Nintendo says Switch 2 can play Switch games, but certain titles may not be supported or fully compatible. An ordinary backward-compatible game is not automatically a Switch 2 Edition, and a Switch 2 Edition’s benefits do not apply to every older game. For third-party titles, Nintendo directs players to the publisher for compatibility information. Check Nintendo’s compatibility guidance before relying on a specific game or feature.
