The “DirectX encountered an unrecoverable error” message in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III (MWIII) does not identify one universal cause, so there is no guaranteed fix. Start with reversible checks—capture the full error, confirm your PC meets the game’s requirements, update Windows and the game, check the graphics driver, and close possible software conflicts. If those steps do not help, use the official crash-report process rather than treating an unverified setting change as a cure.
Before troubleshooting, record the error and when it happens
Write down the entire message and any code in parentheses, plus whether the crash happens at launch, in the menu, or during a match. Also note your GPU and driver version, Windows version, game launcher, and what you were doing immediately before the crash. Different codes can appear with similar wording: one Microsoft Q&A user reported 0x80004005 (0x00000000) (6488) D, while a separate MWIII forum thread reported 0x887A0005 (0x887A0007) (6070) D. These individual reports do not show that the codes share a cause. Microsoft Q&A report · MWIII community thread
Try these 10 checks in order
Change one thing at a time and retry the game. That makes it easier to tell whether a step affected the crash. Activision’s PC crash guidance recommends checking system requirements, closing potentially interfering applications, and using appropriate graphics drivers; it does not identify a universal remedy for this particular message. 1. Restart the game and PC
Close MWIII and the Call of Duty launcher completely, restart Windows, then launch the game again. This is a low-risk way to clear a transient crash state, not a diagnosis or guaranteed fix.

2. Install available game and Windows updates
Check your launcher for a MWIII update and install available Windows updates, then restart if prompted. A current game and operating system are a sensible baseline for troubleshooting, but an update by itself does not establish why DirectX failed.
3. Compare your PC with MWIII’s requirements
Review Activision’s MWIII PC system requirements, including the listed CPU, memory, storage, graphics hardware, Windows edition, and DirectX 12 compatibility. The page says its specifications apply at launch and may be updated, so consult the current page rather than relying on an old copied list. A PC below the applicable requirements may have broader compatibility or stability issues; that alone does not prove the cause of this error.

4. Identify your GPU and current driver
Press Windows+R, type DxDiag, and press Enter. Open the Display tab to find the graphics adapter name and driver version. Activision’s PC graphics-driver instructions explain this identification step and link to NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel support.
5. Check the GPU maker’s current driver and release notes
Use the official support page for the GPU in your PC. Activision’s MWIII materials list NVIDIA 560.70, AMD 23.10.2, and Intel 31.0.101.4972 as driver recommendations from 2024; they are dated recommendations, not the newest-driver claim for 2026. Check the manufacturer’s current release notes and compatibility information. A newly released driver is not automatically the best choice for every system. If the crash began after a driver change, note that timing when deciding what to test next.

6. Close overlays, recording apps, and input-remapping tools
Close likely conflicts—such as overlays, game recording or capture software, and third-party input-remapping tools—then test MWIII. Activision says such applications may interfere with gameplay or boot even if they are not actively being used when the game launches. Retest after closing one category at a time; do not broadly disable security protection.
7. Check cooling and ventilation
Make sure the PC has clear airflow and is in a cool, well-ventilated space. Activision includes this among general crash checks, but it does not establish overheating as the cause of a particular DirectX error.

8. Use your launcher’s repair or verify option if files may be damaged
If the crash followed an interrupted update or you have another reason to suspect damaged game files, use the repair or verify option provided by the launcher where you own MWIII. Menu labels and paths vary by launcher, so follow its current official instructions. The available Activision guidance cited here does not give MWIII-specific verification steps; file verification is a conditional check, not a proven fix for this error.
9. Treat configuration changes as a last-resort experiment
A Reddit user reported that deleting a Call of Duty player/configuration file appeared to stop a DirectX crash after verifying files and updating or reinstalling a driver. The user described gathering the steps from other authors, so this is anecdotal—not official or independently verified guidance. If you choose to test a configuration reset, first back up the file and confirm which file applies to your installation; settings may reset. Reddit user report

10. Submit an Activision PC crash report
If the checks do not resolve the crash, use the PC crash-report option on Activision’s MWIII crashes and freezes page. Include the complete error code, crash timing, GPU and driver version, Windows version, launcher, and steps you have already tried. That information gives Activision a clearer report to investigate than the message text alone.

The message is not enough to identify a faulty GPU, a single driver version, or a particular graphics setting. A community thread discusses possibilities including graphics settings, GPU scheduling, XMP, and game files, but the original poster said several suggested steps did not work. Those reports show that outcomes vary; they do not establish a validated recipe. Avoid jumping straight to BIOS changes, cache deletion, or hardware purchases without evidence that the change fits your PC and symptoms. Community discussion of mixed troubleshooting attempts
