“Underrated” is a judgment, not a measurable status: a game can have an enthusiastic following and still deserve more attention beyond it. This list uses the term for distinctive indie games whose appeal may be easy to miss amid crowded release calendars, niche genres, or limited visibility. The picks are a selective set, not a ranking, and each entry notes who is most likely to enjoy it. Platform details below reflect the cited coverage; check the linked game or storefront page for current availability in your region.
1. Blue Prince
What it is
PlayStation describes Blue Prince as a surreal shifting-room puzzle mystery. Its central appeal is an environment that invites you to compare clues, test theories, and make sense of an unfolding mystery rather than simply clear a fixed sequence of rooms.
Who should play it
Choose it if you enjoy patient exploration and deduction, and do not mind uncertainty while you work out what a place is telling you. PlayStation’s staff account notes that its single-player framing can still prompt note-swapping and theorizing with friends; that is an editorial observation, not a multiplayer mode.
2. Despelote
What it is
Despelote is a slice-of-life adventure set in early-2000s Quito. PlayStation’s roundup connects its setting to Ecuador’s 2002 World Cup qualifying run and its creators’ childhood memories, giving the game a personal, place-specific perspective rather than a conventional sports-game focus.

#1 Best Overall
- Start your own cult in a land of false prophets
- Venture out into diverse and mysterious regions to build a loyal community of woodland Followers
- Repay your debt by building a loyal following
- Spread your Word to become the one true cult!
Who should play it
It is a strong fit for players drawn to intimate storytelling, everyday details, and a vivid sense of place. If you want a deep sports simulation or a fast competitive loop, its slice-of-life approach may not be what you are looking for.
3. Dispatch
What it is
PlayStation’s roundup describes Dispatch as an episodic superhero workplace comedy. The premise pairs narrative choices with hero dispatching and management or puzzle mechanics, making the job of coordinating a team part of the story’s humor and drama.
Who should play it
Try it if you like character-led comedy and decisions that sit alongside light systems to manage. Players seeking uninterrupted action or a traditional superhero brawler may prefer a different kind of game.

4. Pipistrello and the Cursed Yo-Yo
What it is
Pipistrello and the Cursed Yo-Yo is an action-platformer built around its yo-yo moveset, according to PlayStation. That unusual tool gives the game a clear identity: the appeal is in seeing how one distinctive mechanic shapes movement and action.
Who should play it
It suits players who enjoy platforming with a focused, unconventional central ability. Confirm the game’s current platform availability on its official listing before choosing a version; the roundup’s description does not establish every platform or regional release.
5. Gunfire Reborn
What it is
Gunfire Reborn combines first-person shooting with roguelite runs. Choost Games highlights its co-op and the combinations of weapons and scrolls that can shape a run, making experimentation as important as aiming.
Rank #3
- In collaboration with Panic and House House, iam8bit is proud to release Untitled Goose Game "in a box," packed with exclusive collectible goodies:
- Physical Edition of the Game
- The Spring/Summer Plaza Catalog, a 24-page mail-order style circular
- 11" x 17" Village Map Poster
- Premium “No Goose" Sticker
Who should play it
Consider it if you want repeatable shooter runs, build variety, and the option to play cooperatively. Its run-based structure is less suited to someone looking for a tightly authored, one-and-done campaign. Choost Games calls it underrated; that label is the outlet’s opinion, not evidence of low sales or a small audience.
6. Cryptmaster
What it is
Switchblade Gaming categorizes Cryptmaster as a word-based dungeon RPG. Its defining twist is that language is part of the dungeon-crawling experience, setting it apart from RPGs built primarily around familiar combat menus and equipment loops.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWho should play it
It is best for players curious about word-driven mechanics and willing to engage with a less conventional RPG. Switchblade Gaming lists controller-only play, but controls can change with updates; verify the current Steam listing before buying if keyboard support matters to you.
Rank #4
- Play 2 beloved and critically acclaimed masterpieces
- Experience the complete journey of Ori
- Master new skills and face larger-than-life bosses
- Get bonus physical items: set of art cards and digital soundtracks
7. Roadwarden
What it is
Roadwarden is a text-based RPG that PC Gamer staff praised for its strong sense of mystery. Its emphasis on reading and interpreting a world makes it a different proposition from RPGs that rely on real-time combat or cinematic presentation.
Who should play it
Pick it if you like text-forward role-playing and want mystery to carry your curiosity. If you need frequent action or prefer stories delivered mainly through voiced scenes, its format may feel too quiet.

What it is
TechRadar recommends Detective Instinct: Farewell, My Beloved as a modern mystery game. The core draw is the investigation and the desire to work out what happened, rather than action-driven play.

How to find more indie games beyond the usual conversation
There is no standard test for whether a game is “criminally underrated.” Steam curator labels and review-count bands are one way communities organize recommendations, not proof that a game is objectively overlooked. For more discoveries, browse Steam Curators by genre or theme, then use an individual game’s current store page to verify platform, controls, modes, and availability. A crowded release year can make it harder for distinctive games to stand out, but visibility alone does not establish quality or audience size.
