Start by checking whether Fortnite or PlayStation Network is down; no PS5 setting can fix a platform outage. If both services are operational, test the PS5 connection, reboot the network in the correct order, try Ethernet, then work through Wi‑Fi, congestion, region, DNS, NAT and software checks. This order isolates Epic, PSN, your console, home network and ISP with the least disruption.
Menu names below reflect current U.S. PS5 software and can vary slightly by language or system version.
Identify the symptom first

Download speed alone is not a Fortnite health check. Latency, packet delivery, routing and stability matter too. Epic explains the distinction in its latency guide.
10 fixes, in the safest order
1. Check Epic and PlayStation status
At the moment the error occurs, open Epic Games Public Status and PlayStation Network Status. Look for Fortnite login, matchmaking, parties, friends, messaging or voice-chat incidents, and check your ISP’s outage page. If there is an active incident, wait rather than changing DNS, reinstalling Fortnite or resetting the console. Epic’s console guidance starts with these checks: network connection testing.

2. Test the PS5 connection
- Open Settings > Network > Connection Status.
- Select Test Internet Connection.
- Record IP acquisition, internet status, PSN sign-in, NAT type and the displayed download/upload results.
This is a console connectivity check, not a Fortnite packet-loss test. PlayStation documents the path for error NP-104627-0: PS5 connection testing.
3. Power-cycle everything correctly
- Close Fortnite and fully shut down the PS5 (not Rest Mode).
- Turn off the modem and router.
- Wait at least five minutes.
- Power the modem on and wait until it is online.
- Power the router on, wait for LAN/Wi‑Fi service, then start the PS5.
This can clear a transient DHCP session, overloaded router state or ISP handoff. It cannot repair failing hardware, damaged cabling or bad external routing. PlayStation recommends this sequence for NW-102315-2 and NP-104627-0.
4. Test with Ethernet
Connect the PS5 directly to the router with a Cat5e or Cat6 cable and retest. Ethernet removes the wireless hop, interference and signal loss; it does not fix an Epic outage or ISP route. Epic recommends wired play: latency troubleshooting. If wiring is impossible, move the console and router closer, avoid cabinets and walls, and test both 5 GHz (usually faster, shorter range) and 2.4 GHz (longer range, often more congestion). Epic specifically recommends comparing both bands.

5. Stop competing traffic
Pause PS5 downloads and updates, 4K streams, cloud backups and large uploads on every device. Upload saturation can queue game packets and create lag even on a fast plan. If lag appears only during uploads, enable Quality of Service or Smart Queue Management if your router supports it; results depend on the implementation. PlayStation’s connection guidance also recommends idling other devices: Remote Play troubleshooting.

In Fortnite, open Settings and review Matchmaking Region. Start with Auto, then compare the region showing the lowest stable ping. A farther region can win on paper but lose through ISP routing or packet loss.

Epic’s example sends 50 packets: ping ping-nae.ds.on.epicgames.com -n 50. Use its latency instructions; do not try to run that Windows command on the console.
7. Recreate the PS5 network connection
- Go to Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection.
- Select the saved Wi‑Fi or LAN connection and configure it again.
- For a normal baseline use IP Address Settings: Automatic, DHCP Host Name: Do Not Use, DNS: Automatic, MTU: Automatic, Proxy Server: Do Not Use.
Check the SSID, password and security mode carefully. PlayStation’s setup documentation covers advanced settings: internet connection setup. Avoid a static IP unless you have a specific port-forwarding plan; a wrong address can create an IP conflict.
8. Try public DNS as a reversible test
- Open Settings > Network > Set Up Internet Connection.
- Select Wi‑Fi or LAN, choose Custom, and set IP to Automatic.
- Set DHCP Host Name to Do Not Use and DNS to Manual.
- Enter primary
8.8.8.8and secondary8.8.4.4. - Leave MTU Automatic and proxy Do Not Use, then run Test Internet Connection.
Epic documents Google Public DNS and names Cloudflare as an alternative: public DNS instructions. DNS can improve name resolution or service discovery; it normally cannot fix Wi‑Fi interference, congestion, physical distance or ISP peering. Write down the original settings and revert if nothing changes.

9. Investigate NAT, UPnP and filtering
Check NAT in the PS5 connection test. Type 2 is common and usually workable; Type 3 is more restricted and can affect matchmaking, parties and voice chat. Escalate in this order:
- Reboot the router and retest NAT.
- Enable UPnP only on a trusted, correctly configured router.
- If it fails, ask the router maker or ISP about port filtering, CGNAT and port forwarding.
- Do not copy unverified port lists or forward ports blindly.
PlayStation lists these PS5 ports: TCP 80, 443, 3478, 3479, 3480; UDP 3478, 3479, 49152–65535. See NW-102315-2, WS-116520-5 and NW-102254-4. CGNAT may make conventional forwarding impossible; ask the ISP whether a public IPv4 address is available.
10. Restore licenses and update software
- Close Fortnite.
- Open Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses.
- Restart the PS5.
- Check for Fortnite and PS5 system updates.
Epic recommends this flow for PlayStation players stuck on “Checking for Updates”: its troubleshooting article. Reinstall only when updates or files appear corrupted, other network tests are normal, or support directs you to; it rarely fixes a network-layer fault.

Voice chat can fail separately
If matches work but chat does not, press the PS button, select Sound, and disable Mute Game Voice Chat; restart Fortnite. Confirm Fortnite’s voice channel and parental/privacy settings, then retest NAT and DNS. Some interruptions while Fortnite loads should clear after entering a match. Epic’s complete guidance is voice-chat troubleshooting. Router port filtering, SIP-ALG or ISP VoIP restrictions can still block chat while gameplay remains functional.
Use a different network to isolate the fault
- Works on a phone hotspot: suspect home Wi‑Fi, router, NAT, ISP or routing. A hotspot proves reachability, not suitability; mobile latency, caps and carrier NAT make it a diagnostic only.
- Fails on hotspot too: investigate Epic, PSN, console software, account state or the installation.
- Ethernet fixes it: the wireless path is the likely fault.
- Every device is affected: contact the ISP after checking outages.
When to stop changing settings
Epic notes that a sudden ping increase can come from ISP routing to Fortnite servers: latency and ping troubleshooting. If Ethernet, a reboot and an alternate network produce different results, ask the ISP about packet loss, peering, CGNAT, port filtering, line degradation and gateway firmware. A new router, mesh kit or “gaming” service cannot repair an Epic outage or an external route; buy hardware only when testing shows a coverage, stability or traffic-management limitation.
Before contacting support, record the exact error/code, date and time, status-page results, Wi‑Fi or Ethernet, NAT type, Fortnite region, whether other games work, and what happened on a second network. Contact Epic when Fortnite alone fails across networks, PlayStation when PSN or several games fail, and the ISP when multiple household devices or the route are affected.
