101 Games To Play Before You Die: Build a Video-Game Bucket List That Matters

There is no universally correct set of 101 games. “Must play” is an editorial judgment shaped by history, design, personal taste, available hardware and whether an older game remains practical to access. The most prominent current match for this exact title is Cultured Vultures’ 101-entry feature, published June 8, 2026. This article is an independent way to use that idea: a framework for building, checking and actually completing a video-game bucket list rather than treating one publication’s ranking as law.

The goal is a collection that teaches you how the medium changed while still giving you games you can enjoy now. That means balancing landmark influence with distinctive mechanics, genre and era coverage, accessibility, and the simple question of whether you want to keep playing after the historical lesson is over.

What “101 games before you die” should mean

A bucket list works best as a guided tour, not a scoreboard. A game can deserve a place because it introduced a design idea, expressed a genre unusually well, created a memorable world, or remains astonishingly playable decades later. Those are different achievements, and a useful list makes the difference visible.

The June 8, 2026 Cultured Vultures feature presents 101 games as the titles its writers think everyone should play at least once, using a deliberately playful image of the “Final Destination 2 log truck.” That wording signals enthusiasm and editorial personality, not an objective standard. You can use the list as a route through game history without accepting every inclusion or omission.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

For your own version, score each candidate on six questions:

  • Influence: Did later games borrow its structure, interface, technology or vocabulary?
  • Distinctive design: Does it do something few other games do, or execute a familiar idea exceptionally well?
  • Representation: Does it add a genre, platform tradition, country, era or play style missing from the rest of the list?
  • Historical context: Does playing it explain an important transition in the medium?
  • Present-day access: Can a reader legally find a suitable edition and run it without unreasonable effort?
  • Enjoyment now: Is there a compelling reason to play it today, beyond its importance to historians?

Do not collapse those questions into one numerical “greatness” score. A historically vital game may be awkward by modern standards; a less influential game may be an extraordinary current experience. Label the distinction instead of pretending it does not exist.

How major “best games” lists are built

There are two broad ways to assemble a canon. An editor or publication can make a reasoned selection from personal experience, or a project can aggregate many editorial lists and look for repeated appearances. Both approaches answer useful but different questions.

Approach Selection basis Strength Limitation Best use for a reader
Individual editorial curation Writers argue for titles using enthusiasm, replay value, genre importance and memorable experiences. It can champion unusual choices and explain why a game is meaningful. Personal taste and the publication’s audience strongly affect the result. Choose your next game when you want context and a point of view.
Community project Participants debate whether influence, breadth or eclectic variety should dominate. Disagreement exposes assumptions and prevents one definition of “great” from becoming invisible. Consensus can be difficult, and the final list may reflect compromise. Find alternatives when a conventional canon feels too narrow.
Meta-analysis Repeated appearances across other editorial lists are counted under stated rules. It reveals durable critical recognition across many publications. Rare, new or regionally important games may be underrepresented; popularity among critics is not the same as personal enjoyment. Check whether a candidate has broad historical recognition.

The Video Game Canon’s Version 8.0 illustrates the meta-analysis model. Its 2025 project examined 80 editorially overseen best-game lists published from 1985 through 2025. A title needed to appear on at least ten lists, and releases after September 30, 2020 were excluded to reduce recency bias. Those rules make the results more transparent; they do not make the resulting canon definitive.

The Opinionated Gamers’ community project is useful for a different reason: it foregrounds the argument over what a list is supposed to accomplish. Should it teach influence, expose readers to the hobby’s many facets, or maximize eclectic variety? Decide that purpose before you start adding titles.

A practical 101-game structure

Rather than ordering 101 games from “best” to “worst,” organize them into routes. A route gives every selection a job and makes omissions easier to spot.

Route 1: Foundations and turning points

Begin with games that explain major changes in controls, interfaces, camera design, narrative structure, simulation or online play. Include a short note identifying the idea the reader should notice. The objective is not to praise age for its own sake; it is to make a later game’s innovation legible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Route 2: Genre grammar

Reserve space for the defining forms of action, adventure, role-playing, strategy, simulation, puzzle, racing, sports, horror and creative sandbox games. A genre representative should be chosen because it demonstrates a central design principle, not merely because it is famous.

Route 3: Alternative traditions

Make room for games that do not fit a single dominant commercial template. Include independent work, experimental interfaces, unusual pacing and regional design traditions where you can verify a legitimate way to play them. This is where a purely popularity-based canon is most likely to be thin.

Route 4: Modern playability

Finish with games that remain easy to recommend in the present. They need not be recent. A durable control scheme, clear interface, strong preservation release or active community can make an older game more approachable than a technically newer but poorly supported one.

Four touchstones that show why context matters

Dune II and the real-time strategy lineage

Dune II is a useful historical reference when explaining the roots of real-time strategy. Its importance is not just that it came early; it demonstrates how resource collection, base construction, unit production and battlefield decisions can be joined into a continuously unfolding system. When you play it, pay attention to what the interface asks you to do repeatedly and what later games streamline.

Command & Conquer and the ambition to expand a formula

Louis Castle, identified in a Retro Gamer feature as a co-creator of Command & Conquer, described the team’s approach this way: “We were just too aspirational to take Dune II and just iterate on it, we wanted to be much bigger and much bolder”. The quotation is valuable because it frames design history as a series of deliberate choices rather than a smooth march toward modern conventions. Compare the two games for yourself: note how presentation, pacing and audiovisual feedback alter the strategic experience.

Doom and technology-driven design

A Retro Gamer feature quotes a Doom developer explaining, “Doom changed a lot during development because we were creating a new technology with new gameplay.” The excerpt does not identify the speaker by name, so it should not be attributed more specifically. The lesson for a bucket list is clear: play the game as both a fast action title and a response to new technical possibilities. Observe how level layout, weapon rhythm, enemy behavior and audiovisual communication work together.

Age of Empires II and long-term strategy play

Age of Empires II appears as an explicit recommendation in the current 101-game feature. It is a strong candidate for a list because it connects historical settings with an expandable strategy system: gathering, technology choices, production and combat all compete for the player’s attention. If you choose an edition, check the platform, included expansions, multiplayer support and control scheme at the time of purchase; those details were not established by the available source material and can change.

How to play older games without confusing history with comfort

Before starting an older title, write down what you are trying to learn or experience. “Understand the origin of a genre” calls for patience with unfamiliar interfaces. “Have a good evening” may justify choosing a more accessible entry in the same tradition. Neither goal is more legitimate.

  1. Identify the original context. Record the release era, platform family and design problem the game was addressing.
  2. Choose a legitimate, current edition. Confirm the storefront or physical release, operating-system support, controller requirements, language options and regional availability immediately before playing.
  3. Set a bounded first session. Give an unfamiliar classic 30 to 90 minutes, then decide whether the friction is educational, enjoyable or simply obsolete.
  4. Use accessibility settings where available. Remapping, subtitles, speed controls, save options and display adjustments can preserve the design while removing avoidable barriers.
  5. Read a short control guide, not a plot summary. The goal is to understand the intended interaction before outside explanations solve the game for you.
  6. Record your response. Note what still works, what feels dated, and which later games make more sense after playing it.

Do not assume that a title’s historical status guarantees a current re-release. The available material does not verify game-by-game platform compatibility, prices, stock or regional access. Those facts are volatile, so check the publisher or storefront listing for your region when you are ready to play.

How to balance history, variety and enjoyment

A 101-game list can become a museum catalogue if every slot is justified only by influence. It can also become a popularity playlist if every choice is selected for immediate comfort. Use a three-part balance:

  • Learn: titles whose mechanics or production explain an important development.
  • Feel: titles that create an unusually powerful mood, challenge, story or social experience.
  • Compare: paired games that let you see how a genre, technology or design idea changed.

For every five or six historically important games, include something you genuinely want to play next. That rhythm prevents the list from turning into homework. Pairing also produces better discussion than isolated praise: an early strategy game beside a later one, or an influential shooter beside a modern interpretation, makes change visible without declaring one era superior.

Common mistakes when making a bucket list

Treating one publication as universal consensus

The Cultured Vultures list is one publication’s selection, not a vote by all players. Present it as a viewpoint and explain its criteria. If your list differs, that is evidence of a different purpose, not proof that one side is wrong.

Using recency as a substitute for importance

New releases can be excellent, but their long-term influence is not yet knowable. The Video Game Canon’s September 30, 2020 cutoff shows one way to limit recency bias; it also necessarily leaves out later games. State the trade-off.

Ignoring access

A recommendation that requires unavailable hardware, a delisted edition or an uncertain regional release is incomplete. Mark access as a separate field and update it when you can verify the information.

Ranking unlike experiences with false precision

There is no meaningful way to prove that a strategy landmark is “better” than a horror classic on one scale. Use categories, routes and reasons instead of pretending that position 37 has objective significance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A repeatable checklist for your final 101

  • Does every title have one clear reason for inclusion?
  • Are multiple decades, platforms, genres and design traditions represented?
  • Can you distinguish historical importance from present-day enjoyment?
  • Have you identified which choices are personal recommendations and which reflect broad critical recognition?
  • Have you checked current editions and regional access separately from historical claims?
  • Are there enough immediately enjoyable games to sustain a newcomer through the educational ones?
  • Have you left room for disagreement rather than calling the list definitive?

The best bucket list is revisable. Keep the 101 count if the number gives the project shape, but allow replacements when a better representative appears, access changes or your purpose evolves. A list built to teach history will not look identical to one built for family multiplayer, accessibility, or a first tour through PC strategy.

Where this leaves the “must-play” question

There is no single answer to “What are the 101 games everyone should play before they die?” There are defensible methods: individual curation explains a writer’s experience, community debate reveals competing values, and meta-analysis shows repeated recognition across editorial lists. Use all three as lenses, then choose games that teach you something and reward the time required to play them.

That is the standard a video-game bucket list should meet: not universal agreement, but transparent reasons, broad coverage, practical access information and enough enduring pleasure to make the journey worthwhile.
