For most buyers, a 27-inch 1440p monitor is the better long-term choice for GTA 6, PC games and everyday desktop use. Choose 1080p instead when keeping the purchase as cheap as possible, using a smaller screen, or reducing the rendering load on an older PC. That recommendation is about the monitor’s overall usefulness—not a claim that GTA VI has a confirmed 1440p mode.
Rockstar has not announced GTA VI’s retail resolution, frame-rate modes, upscaling method or ray-tracing settings. The game is officially listed for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a November 19, 2026 launch date. Treat any predicted output, including pre-release readings around 1440p and 30 frames per second, as analysis rather than a guaranteed console setting.

The short answer
Buy 1440p if the monitor will also be used with a gaming PC, productivity apps or a stronger future system. At roughly 27 inches, 2560×1440 gives visibly finer detail and sharper text than 1920×1080 without requiring the extreme GPU performance associated with 4K. It also leaves more room for a later PC upgrade.

Do not select a monitor solely because a listing advertises 1440p, 120Hz or 180Hz. For a console purchase, the important checks are the monitor’s actual HDMI input capabilities, variable-refresh-rate support, scaling behavior, warranty and panel quality.
What is officially confirmed about GTA VI
Rockstar Games’ customer-support listing identifies PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S as the launch platforms. It does not publish a target resolution or frame rate. Take-Two’s June 24, 2026 pre-order announcement gives the launch date as November 19, 2026 and lists the standard edition at $79.99.
A September 28, 2026 technical fact-check also notes that Rockstar has not published final resolution, frame-rate, upscaling or ray-tracing specifications. Digital Foundry’s approximately 1440p/30fps interpretation of pre-release footage is an expert reading of unfinished material, not a retail specification. The final game could use different internal resolutions, reconstruction techniques or performance modes.

What the resolution difference looks like
Pixel density and screen size
Resolution describes the number of pixels the display can show, while pixel density also depends on screen size. Stretching 1920×1080 across a 27-inch panel produces a coarser image than using 2560×1440 at the same size. Fine foliage, distant signs, character outlines and small interface elements can look cleaner at 1440p, provided the game supplies enough image data and the monitor scales it correctly.
At a smaller 24-inch size, 1080p has a more comfortable pixel density for many desks. If you sit farther away, the practical difference also shrinks. Conversely, a 27-inch 1080p monitor can look soft for desktop text when viewed close up, even if the same resolution appears acceptable from a sofa.

- Quality Visuals: The KG271U 27" IPS monitor with 2560 x 1440 QHD resolution in a 16:9 aspect ratio presents stunning, high-quality images with excellent detail. The zero-frame design does away with the thick frames found on conventional monitors freeing up precious screen space.
- AMD FreeSync Technology: Say “goodbye” to stuttering and tearing. With AMD FreeSync, the monitor’s frames are synced with the graphics card’s frames, which eliminates screen tearing and provide the smoothest gaming experience.
- Up to 180Hz: The 180Hz refresh rate speeds up the frames per second to deliver an ultra-smooth 2D motion scene. With a rapid refresh rate of up to 180Hz, Acer Gaming Monitors shorten the time it takes for frame rendering, lower input lag and provide gamers an excellent in-game experience.
- Responsive!!: Up to 0.5ms GTG (Gray to Gray) response time enhanced gamers’ in-game experience. No matter the fast-moving action or any dramatic transitions will be all rendered smoothly without the annoying effects of smearing or ghosting with KG271U Gaming Monitor.

Rendering workload on a PC
1440p contains roughly 78 percent more pixels than 1080p. A PC therefore has more shading, geometry and post-processing work to complete for each frame, although the exact performance difference varies by game and graphics settings. A modest or older GPU may maintain smoother frame rates at 1080p. A newer GPU with spare headroom can use 1440p for a clearer image, then reduce settings or enable an in-game reconstruction option if necessary.

If a console or game outputs 1080p to a 1440p monitor, the monitor must scale the signal. Good scaling can look clean; poor scaling may appear softer than a native 1080p display. The reverse is also possible: a 1080p monitor can accept a higher-resolution signal only by reducing it to its native grid. Check independent measurements or the manufacturer’s documented input modes when scaling quality matters to you.
How GTA VI uncertainty should affect the purchase
There is no official basis for saying GTA VI requires 1440p, guarantees 1440p, runs at 60fps or includes a particular performance mode. Console games commonly make trade-offs among image quality, frame rate, effects and reconstruction, but Rockstar has not published GTA VI’s choices.
A 1440p monitor can still be the sensible choice because it is a better all-purpose display. It provides a sharper desktop, supports PC games that render above 1080p and can accept a 1080p console signal when needed. The extra capability is useful even if GTA VI ultimately renders internally below 1440p.
Conversely, selecting 1080p is rational when the display is small, the viewing distance is long, the budget is strict or the attached PC cannot take advantage of additional pixels. You are not giving up a confirmed GTA VI feature by choosing 1080p; you are choosing lower cost and lower rendering demand.
Choose by your actual setup
PlayStation 5 as the only source
Start with the console’s supported display modes and the monitor’s documented HDMI modes. A 1440p monitor is attractive if you also plan to connect a PC or value sharper menus and text. A 1080p model is sufficient for a compact desk or a budget-focused purchase. Because GTA VI’s output is not announced, do not assume that a 1440p monitor will force the game to render at 1440p.

Xbox Series X|S as the only source
Use the same logic: verify the monitor accepts the console’s available resolutions and refresh rates over HDMI, then decide whether the display will have other jobs. A higher-resolution monitor may offer more flexibility for other games, while 1080p avoids paying for pixels your chosen games or viewing distance may not use.
Console plus gaming PC
This is the strongest case for 1440p. The monitor can provide a sharper Windows or other desktop workspace, a useful target for PC games and a sensible middle ground between 1080p and 4K. Ensure your PC has enough GPU headroom for the games you actually play; the monitor cannot create performance that the graphics card does not have.
Older or entry-level PC
Choose 1080p if stable performance matters more than desktop sharpness. Lower resolution gives the GPU less work and leaves more room for higher settings or steadier frame delivery. A 1440p monitor remains usable, but you may need to run PC games at 1080p and rely on scaling, which can reduce the benefit of buying the higher-resolution panel.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSmall desk, large desk or living-room distance
For a close viewing position, 1440p around 27 inches is a balanced combination of detail and physical size. For a compact desk, 1080p around 24 inches can look appropriately dense and cost less. From a couch or across a room, distance can matter more than the nominal resolution; prioritize screen size, brightness and viewing angles alongside pixel count.
Strict budget
Compare the complete monitor, not only the resolution label. A cheaper 1440p display with poor motion handling, limited HDMI support or no useful warranty may be a worse console purchase than a well-built 1080p model. Keep money available for a stand, cable, replacement warranty or other accessories you genuinely need.
Do you need 120Hz for GTA VI?
No confirmed GTA VI frame-rate mode makes 120Hz a requirement. A 120Hz-or-faster panel can be worthwhile for other games and for a console interface that supports higher refresh output, but it does not guarantee that GTA VI will render at 120 frames per second or even offer a 60fps mode.

Refresh rate is the panel’s maximum update frequency; it is not the same as the game’s frame rate. If a game produces fewer frames, a high-refresh monitor does not manufacture additional frames. It can still reduce the cost of a future upgrade and provide smoother motion in titles that run faster.
VRR, HDMI and other specifications that matter
Variable refresh rate
VRR allows the monitor’s refresh timing to follow changing frame delivery, reducing tearing and uneven motion within its supported range. It is a useful feature for console and PC gaming, but GTA VI’s VRR behavior has not been announced. Confirm that VRR works over the specific HDMI input you will use; some monitors reserve their broadest VRR range for DisplayPort.
HDMI input capability
Console compatibility depends on the actual HDMI implementation, not only the advertised refresh number. Check the manufacturer’s input table for supported combinations of resolution, refresh rate, HDR and VRR. A monitor with a 180Hz headline may accept a console signal at a much lower limit, while another display may provide the exact mode you need over HDMI 2.0 or HDMI 2.1. Verify before buying.
Response time and motion handling
Look for measured response behavior rather than a single “1ms” figure. Overdrive settings can create bright trails or inverse ghosting when pushed too far. Reviews that test several refresh rates and overdrive modes are more useful than a box specification.
HDR and contrast
High dynamic range can improve bright lights and dark scenes, but the label alone does not establish image quality. Consider sustained brightness, local-dimming behavior, black levels and whether HDR works at the HDMI mode you plan to use. A well-tuned SDR image is preferable to a weak HDR implementation that looks washed out.

Ergonomics and warranty
Height adjustment, a stable stand, sensible cable routing and a clear dead-pixel or replacement policy affect daily use more than a small difference in maximum refresh rate. Console displays often stay in service for years, so warranty coverage and return conditions deserve attention.

Buying checklist for a GTA VI monitor
- Choose the role first: decide whether the monitor is console-only, mixed console-and-PC or primarily a PC display.
- Select the native resolution: use 1080p for a budget or older-PC setup; use 1440p for sharper desktop work and upgrade flexibility.
- Match the size to distance: 1080p commonly makes the most sense on a smaller screen, while 1440p is especially convincing around 27 inches.
- Read the HDMI input table: confirm the exact resolution, refresh, HDR and VRR combinations available from the console port.
- Check scaling behavior: establish how the monitor handles a 1080p signal if you are considering 1440p.
- Confirm VRR support: make sure it works over HDMI and within a useful range for your console or PC.
- Evaluate motion quality: look for independent response-time and overdrive testing instead of trusting a peak “1ms” claim.
- Inspect HDR and contrast evidence: prioritize measured performance over a badge on the product page.
- Check physical fit: measure desk depth, stand footprint, VESA support and viewing height.
- Review warranty and returns: confirm dead-pixel terms, shipping damage coverage and the return window before purchase.
- Ignore unverified GTA VI promises: no monitor can guarantee a game mode Rockstar has not announced.
Example of a 27-inch 1440p option
The AOC Q27G3XMN listing describes a 27-inch 2560×1440 Mini-LED monitor with a 180Hz refresh rate, Adaptive Sync, HDMI 2.0, DisplayPort 1.4 and stated readiness for Xbox, PlayStation and Switch. Those specifications illustrate why a 27-inch 1440p display can be a versatile PC-and-console choice: it has more desktop detail than 1080p and refresh-rate headroom for games that run faster than GTA VI may.
They do not establish GTA VI’s output. Before buying any similarly specified monitor, verify the current HDMI mode table, whether Adaptive Sync operates from the console input, and the seller’s warranty and return terms. Product availability and pricing can change.
Common mistakes to avoid
Buying for a rumor
Pre-release footage can be analyzed, but it cannot replace a published retail specification. Do not pay extra because a retailer or video claims that GTA VI will definitely use 1440p, 60fps or a named performance mode.
Assuming a higher number is always better
A 180Hz 1080p monitor may deliver a better experience for a low-powered PC than a 1440p panel that forces severe settings cuts. Resolution, refresh, VRR, response behavior, contrast and input support should be considered together.
Ignoring the console input
Some monitors advertise their highest refresh through DisplayPort while offering fewer modes over HDMI. A console normally connects through HDMI, so read that port’s specifications rather than the largest number on the box.
Choosing the wrong size
Putting 1080p on a large, close-viewed screen can make text and fine detail look soft. Conversely, paying for 1440p on a small screen viewed from far away may yield little visible benefit. Match pixel density and viewing distance.
Forgetting future use
If you expect to build or buy a stronger PC, 1080p can become the limiting part of the setup. If you expect to remain console-only and have a strict budget, the extra cost of 1440p may be better spent elsewhere.
A practical decision framework
| Your priority | More suitable choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Lowest purchase cost and a small screen | 1080p | Lower-cost panels are common, and the pixel density suits smaller sizes |
| Older PC or limited graphics performance | 1080p | Lower rendering demand makes steady performance easier |
| Console plus PC on one monitor | 1440p | Sharper desktop use and greater upgrade flexibility |
| About 27 inches at a desk | 1440p | Higher pixel density improves text and fine detail |
| Buying specifically for a rumored GTA VI mode | Neither on that basis | Rockstar has not confirmed a resolution or frame-rate target |
How to verify your setup before launch
- Check the monitor manual: record the HDMI resolutions, refresh rates, HDR modes and VRR range it supports.
- Connect the console directly: avoid assuming an adapter, switch or receiver passes every mode.
- Open the console’s display settings: on PlayStation, the path is generally under Settings, Screen and Video, then Video Output; on Xbox, it is generally under Settings, General, then TV and display options. Labels can change with system software.
- Use the automatic detection result as a starting point: then test the available resolution, refresh and VRR combinations rather than selecting a mode the display cannot handle.
- Check the game’s own options after installation: if GTA VI ships with graphics or performance choices, those in-game settings—not a monitor listing—determine the available modes.
- Keep a fallback mode: if an advanced combination causes a blank screen or instability, return to the console’s automatic display setting and reconnect directly.
The monitor decision can be made now without guessing GTA VI’s final renderer. Buy for the combination of screen size, PC capability, console input support and your budget. For most mixed-use buyers, that points to 27-inch 1440p; for compact, inexpensive or lower-powered setups, 1080p remains the sensible alternative.
