720p vs 1080p

1080p vs. 720p: Does Stream Bitrate Change a VPS’s Monthly Cost?

1080p can send more data than 720p at a higher bitrate, but a VPS bill rises only when that traffic is billable under your provider’s transfer rules.

It can, but not because a VPS automatically charges more for 1080p. Higher encoded bitrate sends more data for the same viewer-hours. Your bill rises only if that extra outbound traffic is billable under your provider’s plan—for example, when it exceeds an included allowance. Resolution is not itself a billing formula: bitrate, viewing time, audience size, and the provider’s transfer rules determine the result.

Why 1080p can use more VPS bandwidth

A stream’s resolution and bitrate are related in many encoding profiles, but they are not interchangeable. Resolution describes the video’s pixel dimensions; bitrate describes how much encoded data is sent over time. Two 1080p streams can use different bitrates, and a 720p stream can use more data than a particularly low-bitrate 1080p stream.

For an example—not a universal recommendation—AWS’s live-streaming deployment guide uses 2,700 kbps for 1280×720 output and 4,100 kbps for 1920×1080 output. At equal viewing time, that 1080p example sends about 1.52 times as much video data as the 720p example (4.1 ÷ 2.7), before overhead. Actual settings depend on the encoder, content, and delivery setup. AWS’s live-streaming cost guide treats viewer traffic separately from encoding and packaging.

Estimate traffic from bitrate and viewer-hours

For a simplified constant-bitrate estimate, multiply bitrate in bits per second by viewer-seconds, then divide by eight to get bytes:

Approximate bytes = bitrate (bits/second) × total viewing seconds ÷ 8

Use the combined average video-and-audio bitrate where possible. With decimal units, a sustained 1 Mbps stream sends about 0.45 GB in one viewer-hour: 1,000,000 bits per second × 3,600 seconds ÷ 8 = 450,000,000 bytes. One viewer watching continuously for a 30-day month would use about 324 GB at 1 Mbps. These are arithmetic estimates, not provider invoice predictions.

Example profile Approximate data per viewer-hour Basis
720p at 2.7 Mbps About 1.22 GB AWS example profile; decimal units, before overhead
1080p at 4.1 Mbps About 1.85 GB AWS example profile; decimal units, before overhead

Multiply the relevant per-viewer-hour figure by your expected total viewer-hours. For example, 100 viewer-hours at the 4.1 Mbps example rate is roughly 185 GB before overhead. Variable bitrate, protocol overhead, buffering, retransmissions, and differences in a provider’s measurement units can make metered usage differ.

When the extra traffic changes a VPS bill

A VPS’s compute charge and outbound-transfer billing are separate things to check. The 1080p version may send more data without changing the base server price; whether it adds a charge depends on the plan’s included transfer, excess-usage rate, pooling rules, region, and definition of billable traffic.

For a provider-specific example, DigitalOcean documents included outbound transfer allowances by Droplet plan and charges $0.01 per additional GiB, according to documentation last verified 14 September 2026. Its allowance and usage are pooled at the team level. DigitalOcean says inbound Droplet transfer is free; public-interface outbound data counts toward the team pool, while traffic between Droplets over a VPC uses a private interface. These are DigitalOcean terms, not a general VPS rule. Check the current terms for your own provider and plan. DigitalOcean Droplet plans are Linux virtual machines; its bandwidth documentation explains transfer billing.

Calculate the possible overage

  1. Estimate total outbound video traffic using your average encoded bitrate and expected viewer-hours.
  2. Check the plan’s monthly outbound allowance, including whether it is shared across servers or accounts.
  3. Find the overage rate and its unit—GB and GiB are not identical—and confirm which destinations and interfaces count.
  4. Apply the rate only to traffic that the provider defines as billable excess. Include any separate charges for encoding, storage, or delivery.

Without your provider and plan, bitrate, audience, viewing duration, and billing region, there is no defensible exact monthly cost difference between 720p and 1080p.

VPS transfer billing is not the only delivery model

Services that deliver video can meter costs differently from a general-purpose VPS, so compare the billing unit rather than just a headline price.

Option Documented billing basis Important qualification
VPS / DigitalOcean Droplet Plan allowance and outbound transfer; DigitalOcean documents $0.01 per additional GiB Provider-specific terms; verify the current plan, pool, and traffic treatment
Cloudflare Stream Stored and delivered video minutes; bandwidth is included in delivery with no additional egress fee Cloudflare’s pricing page, updated 8 September 2026, lists $1 per 1,000 minutes delivered. It says WebRTC delivery billing begins 15 October 2026; check current pricing and applicability.
ApsaraVideo Live Pay by traffic, peak bandwidth, or monthly 95th-percentile bandwidth Rates vary by region; the 95th-percentile method is restricted to select users.

These are different cost models, not proof that one is cheaper for every stream. AWS’s cost example also assumes viewers receive the highest bitrate for an upper cost range; it should not be reused as a current quote for another architecture or region. Cloudflare Stream pricing and ApsaraVideo Live billing documentation describe their respective models.

What to compare before choosing a plan

  • Monthly outbound allowance and whether it is pooled across servers, projects, or accounts.
  • Overage rate and unit, such as GB or GiB.
  • Whether billing is based on transferred traffic, peak bandwidth, or a percentile—and the eligible regions or accounts.
  • Which traffic counts, including public versus private networking, IPv6, caches, destinations, and dropped traffic.
  • Expected viewer-hours and the bitrate or adaptive-bitrate ladder viewers actually receive.
  • Separate charges for video encoding, storage, packaging, or managed delivery.

For games, gameplay motion and detail can affect how much bitrate is needed to preserve image quality, but the final traffic estimate still depends on the encoded rate and total watch time. Use the encoder’s actual average bitrate where available rather than treating “720p” or “1080p” as a fixed bandwidth amount.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running 24/7, StreamNeo is the cloud option to try first: it loops uploaded video from the cloud, at any quality up to 4K 60fps as uploaded, for one flat price per slot, with the first day free.

Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Every slot includes 10 GB of storage, pooled across active slots, and support from the StreamNeo team. It streams to YouTube and plays uploaded videos; it does not go live from a camera. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo, or start your free day.
