Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Video encoding compresses your live video and audio into a stream a platform can ingest. For a game stream, the path is typically capture your gameplay and microphone, encode the frames and sound in real time, then send the compressed feed to YouTube or another platform. The platform may transcode that feed into versions suited to viewers’ devices and connections. The right settings depend on the platform, the motion in your game, your computer’s encoding capacity, and sustained upload—not on one universal “best bitrate.”
What an encoder does in a live-streaming setup
A game produces pictures and sound; a capture source provides them to streaming software such as OBS Studio. The encoder compresses those signals quickly enough to keep pace with the incoming frames. The software then sends the encoded stream to the platform’s ingest endpoint. YouTube says it detects the encoder settings and automatically transcodes a live stream for viewers across devices and networks (YouTube live encoder settings).
Encoding is a real-time workload. If the encoder cannot finish processing frames quickly enough, the stream may suffer encoding overload or dropped frames. Higher output resolution and frame rate generally require more work; OBS notes that 60 fps can be much more demanding than 30 fps. The platform’s ingest requirements determine which formats and settings it will accept, while the viewer-facing stream is a separate stage.
Which settings matter most?
Codec and platform support
A codec determines how video is compressed. YouTube’s current RTMP/RTMPS live guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1. That support is specific to YouTube; do not assume another service accepts the same codecs or settings. For YouTube’s listed workflow, it recommends RTMPS, CBR rate control, and a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Its guidance lists AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS; 5.1 surround is supported only with AAC. For SDR, YouTube recommends Rec. 709. Its HDR guidance names H.265/HEVC and says AV1 is not supported for HDR. At 3840×2160 and above, YouTube recommends at least two tile columns for AV1. Check the platform’s current live guidance before choosing settings (YouTube live encoder settings).

Bitrate
Bitrate is the amount of encoded data sent per second. Raising it can preserve more detail, especially in a fast-moving game, but only if the platform accepts the setting and your connection can sustain it. A sharp speed-test peak is not a guarantee of stable upload during a broadcast; leave headroom for network variation and other traffic. YouTube advises choosing quality that gives a reliable stream for your connection and testing upload bitrate.
The table shows YouTube’s published minimum and recommended video bitrates in Mbps, checked against its live encoder guidance on 2026-10-03. These are platform recommendations, not independently measured thresholds for image quality.

Use the target platform’s current recommendation as a starting point, then test your actual scene and connection. OBS also notes that its video bitrate setting depends on upload speed and the service’s limits (OBS: Streaming with x264; OBS: Encoding performance).
Resolution, frame rate, and game motion
Resolution sets the dimensions of the output image; frame rate sets how many frames are sent each second. Both affect encoder load and the amount of data needed. In OBS, the base canvas resolution and scaled output resolution are separate: the canvas is the layout working area, while the output resolution is what is encoded and sent. If the computer struggles, lowering output resolution or frame rate can reduce the workload.

Motion and detail matter as well. A mostly static scene is easier to represent cleanly than fast camera turns, particle effects, or busy action at the same bitrate. OBS’s x264 examples distinguish content motion and rely on specific encoder presets and profiles; they are not universal bitrate settings for every game, codec, or platform.
Hardware or software encoding?
Software encoding uses general-purpose processor resources. Hardware encoding uses a dedicated encoder in supported graphics or other hardware. Neither is automatically the best choice for every setup: the result depends on encoder generation, codec support, resolution and frame-rate target, scene complexity, and available CPU/GPU headroom.

- Consider hardware encoding when your system has a supported encoder and you want to reserve general-purpose CPU capacity for the game or other work.
- Consider software encoding when its quality and controls suit your workload and your processor can keep up without affecting gameplay or the stream.
- Test your actual setup rather than relying on a blanket hardware-versus-software rule. OBS describes hardware encoders as useful for real-time work but notes a quality-per-bitrate trade-off in its x264 comparison; that older comparison is not a current, independent ranking of every encoder generation.
OBS’s version 31.0 NVENC reference documents constant-QP and variable-bitrate options, average and maximum bitrate fields, GOP/keyframe controls, and codec-specific features. Its split-encode feature applies to HEVC/AV1 and requires an NVIDIA Ada Generation GPU with at least two NVENC engines; OBS notes a possible visible seam at low bitrates. Those details describe particular OBS/NVENC implementations, not requirements for live encoding generally (OBS: Streaming with x264; OBS NVENC guide).
Configure and test a game stream
- Check the destination’s live ingest requirements. In YouTube Help, open “Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions” and confirm the accepted codec, bitrate guidance, rate control, keyframe interval, and audio format. Do not copy a chart made for another service.
- Set a realistic output resolution and frame rate. In OBS, distinguish the base canvas from the scaled output resolution. Choose an output your system can encode and your upload can sustain. If the game is demanding, 30 fps or a lower output resolution may be more reliable than pushing 60 fps at a high resolution.
- Choose a supported encoder and rate control. Match the codec and settings to the platform. For YouTube’s listed RTMP/RTMPS workflow, its guidance specifies CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds.
- Run a private or otherwise appropriate pre-event test. Use representative gameplay, movement, effects, and microphone/game audio. Check the platform’s stream health and playback, plus OBS statistics for encoding overload and dropped frames. YouTube and OBS both recommend testing before a live event.
- Adjust one cause at a time. If encoding cannot keep up, lower frame rate or output resolution, or use a less demanding encoder preset, then test again. If the stream is stable but detail breaks up during motion, compare the bitrate with both platform guidance and sustained upload capacity, using a representative scene.
Why a stream looks blurry, stutters, or drops frames
| Symptom | Likely issue | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| Image breaks up during fast action | Bitrate may be too low for the motion and detail, or the connection may not sustain the chosen bitrate. | Test the platform’s recommended bitrate for the selected codec and output; check sustained upload stability and reduce output demands if needed. |
| Encoding overload or rendering/encoding lag | The computer may not be processing the chosen resolution and frame rate in time. | Lower output resolution or frame rate, choose a less demanding preset, or test a supported hardware encoder. |
| Network dropped frames or an unstable ingest connection | Upload capacity may fluctuate, or bitrate may be too close to the connection’s limit. | Leave upload headroom, test the connection under realistic conditions, and choose a lower bitrate if the stream remains unstable. |
| Audio problems or stream rejected by the platform | Audio format, codec, keyframe interval, or another ingest setting may not match the platform’s requirements. | Recheck the destination’s current live encoder guidance and confirm the encoder output settings. |
| Stream works in testing but fails during a real session | The test may not have included representative action, audio, or competing network/computer load. | Repeat testing with typical gameplay and sound; monitor stream health throughout the event. |
Do you need a capture card?
A capture card is an optional input device when you need to bring an external camera, console, or other video source into OBS. It is not required to encode gameplay or a screen that the computer already captures. Before buying one, check that its inputs and outputs match your source, that it supports your operating system, and that it works for your intended resolution and frame rate. OBS lists capture cards among the available scene sources (OBS quick start guide).
