Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 is the best first DNS server to try for gaming, with Google Public DNS as the main compatibility alternative. However, there is no universal fastest resolver: your ISP’s DNS may be quicker from your location, and DNS changes do not normally reduce the ping of an established multiplayer session.

This 2025 comparison ranks 11 useful options by purpose—speed baseline, reliability, privacy, security, and filtering—and explains how to test DNS without confusing lookup time with actual game latency.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

There is no DNS server that is objectively fastest for every gamer. The best starting points are usually Cloudflare (1.1.1.1) and Google Public DNS (8.8.8.8), but your ISP’s resolver can be faster from your location. Quad9, AdGuard DNS, Control D, and other filtered services may be better if security or ad blocking matters more than an unfiltered response.

Most importantly, DNS is not the same thing as game-server ping. DNS translates a hostname into an IP address. Once the game has connected to a server, changing DNS normally does not reroute that connection or reduce its ongoing latency. A resolver can improve login and matchmaking lookups, reliability, privacy, filtering, or sometimes the endpoint a service selects—but only a separate in-game test can show whether it improves your actual multiplayer experience.

What “fastest DNS for gaming” really means

When you launch a game, launcher, voice service, or matchmaking client, it may need DNS to resolve several hostnames. A faster or more reliable resolver can make those initial lookups complete sooner. This may help with a slow launcher, failed login, matchmaking errors, or a game that cannot find a service.

That is different from the latency shown during a match. Your in-game ping is mainly affected by the distance to the game server, the route through your ISP and the wider internet, congestion, Wi-Fi conditions, packet loss, and server load. DNS usually plays no part after the connection is established.

Resolver choice can occasionally have an indirect effect. Large services and CDNs may return different IP addresses depending on which DNS resolver asks the question. That can send a client to a different edge or service endpoint. The result varies by country, ISP, resolver, CDN, cache state, and the specific game. It is a possibility—not a guarantee that a famous public DNS provider will lower your ping.

11 Your ISP’s DNS Location-specific baseline Leave the network on automatic DNS

1. Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 — best overall starting point

Addresses: 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1.

Cloudflare’s standard public resolver is the easiest first alternative to test against your ISP’s DNS. It has a large anycast network, is available across hundreds of cities, and supports encrypted DNS through DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH) and DNS-over-TLS (DoT).

The standard service is intended to be unfiltered. Cloudflare provides separate Families endpoints for malware and adult-content filtering, so do not assume that the regular addresses block those categories. Cloudflare also says it does not sell user data to advertisers.

Why gamers choose it: It is a strong general-purpose option for quick lookups, encrypted DNS, and broad availability.

Limitation: It is not proven to reduce your in-game ping everywhere. Test it from your own ISP and region.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Google Public DNS — best compatibility and reliability alternative

Addresses: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.

Google Public DNS is a useful baseline when the ISP resolver produces inconsistent results, fails to resolve a launcher, or appears to have temporary outages. It supports DNSSEC validation, DoH, and DoT, and has a global network.

Google’s published privacy explanation distinguishes between short-lived operational data and longer-term aggregate information. It says temporary logs containing client IP and query details are deleted through processes operating within 24–48 hours, while anonymized aggregate data is retained longer.

Why gamers choose it: broad compatibility and a dependable comparison point when troubleshooting connection or login failures.

Limitation: The standard service is generally unfiltered. Choose a security-filtering resolver instead if malware blocking is your priority.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Quad9 — best security-first resolver

Addresses: 9.9.9.9 and 149.112.112.112.

Quad9’s secure service blocks domains associated with malware, phishing, scams, adware, and related threats. It supports DoH, DoT, and DNSCrypt. Quad9 says it does not log or record end-user IP addresses and operates as a Swiss-based nonprofit.

Why gamers choose it: It adds threat blocking without requiring a local filtering server, making it a sensible option for a gaming PC or household that values security and privacy.

Limitation: Filtering can occasionally block a legitimate game, launcher, telemetry, authentication, or voice-service hostname. Quad9 reports blocked domains as NXDOMAIN, which can look like a game-server failure. If a game stops logging in after the change, temporarily compare an unfiltered resolver such as Cloudflare or Google.

  • The unique flat cable shape allows for a cleaner and safer installation. You can easily and seamlessly make the cable run along walls, follow edges & corners or even make it completely invisible by sliding it under a carpet.

4. OpenDNS — best established filtering ecosystem

Addresses: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220.

OpenDNS is a long-established public DNS service associated with security and content filtering. The basic resolver addresses are separate from account-managed policies available through Cisco’s OpenDNS and Umbrella products. A household can use OpenDNS as a straightforward resolver, while managed users can apply broader network policies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why gamers choose it: It is a practical alternative for families that want established filtering and centralized controls.

Limitation: It is not the obvious choice for raw DNS speed alone. Filtering policies can also interfere with a game or companion service, so test with filtering disabled if troubleshooting.

5. AdGuard DNS — best simple ad and tracker blocking

Addresses: 94.140.14.14 and 94.140.15.15.

AdGuard’s default public DNS servers block ads, trackers, and phishing domains. AdGuard also provides separate non-filtering and family-focused profiles.

Why gamers choose it: It can reduce advertising and tracking requests on a gaming PC or home network without requiring a locally hosted Pi-hole-style setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Limitation: Filtering can break game logins, launchers, telemetry, embedded advertisements, or companion services. If a game behaves strangely, use the non-filtering profile while diagnosing the problem. Do not judge the service solely by a lookup that returns a blocked result.

6. NextDNS — best customization

Addresses: NextDNS does not use one universal public pair for every user. Its configuration generates resolver addresses and encrypted-DNS settings for that specific configuration.

NextDNS is aimed at advanced users who want per-device policies, logs, allowlists, blocklists, and granular control. That can be useful when a household needs different rules for a gaming PC, children’s devices, and work equipment.

Why gamers choose it: detailed control lets you identify and allow a game or launcher domain without abandoning all filtering.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Limitation: Conventional IPv4 router setup may require linking the network’s public IP address to a configuration. That can be inconvenient behind carrier-grade NAT or on networks whose public IP changes frequently. Use the resolver addresses generated by your own NextDNS configuration rather than copying a generic address from another setup.

7. Control D — best configurable filtering alternative

Addresses: Control D offers separate free public profiles for unfiltered resolution, malware protection, ad and tracker blocking, social filtering, and family-friendly filtering. Use the addresses supplied for the profile you select.

Why gamers choose it: It gives households and power users a selectable policy without requiring a locally managed DNS filter. The unfiltered or malware-only profile is more suitable for diagnosing a game that cannot connect.

Control D says its free service supports encrypted DNS and does not store individual browsing history, timestamps, or logs. It also advertises paid customizable endpoint management; verify the current plan details before treating it as a purchase recommendation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Limitation: The filtering profile matters more than the brand name. A social, ad, or family filter can block a hostname required by a launcher or game-related service.

It also supports Power over Ethernet (PoE, PoE+, PoE++) for powering devices like IP cameras, VoIP phones, and wireless access points, ensuring fast and reliable network performance.

8. Mullvad DNS — best privacy-oriented filtering menu

Mullvad documents a public anycast DNS service with separate hostnames and profiles for unfiltered, ad-blocking, malware-blocking, adult-content, gambling, and social-media filtering. Its documented IPv4 options include:

  • 194.242.2.2 — unfiltered DNS
  • 194.242.2.3 — ad blocking
  • 194.242.2.4 — base filtering
  • 194.242.2.5 — extended filtering
  • 194.242.2.6 — family filtering
  • 194.242.2.9 — all listed filters

Why gamers choose it: It provides privacy-oriented filtering choices, including a straightforward unfiltered option for compatibility testing.

Limitation: The public DNS service should not be confused with a Mullvad VPN subscription. The documented public resolver is described separately, and a VPN is not required simply to use those DNS addresses.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

9. Comodo Secure DNS — security-focused legacy option

Addresses: 8.26.56.26 and 8.20.247.20.

Comodo lists these as its public Secure DNS servers and describes a redundant worldwide resolution network.

Why gamers choose it: It is a reasonable secondary troubleshooting option for users looking for a security-oriented resolver outside the most commonly mentioned providers.

Limitation: Current independent performance evidence is less comprehensive than for the largest public resolvers. Treat it as a location-specific alternative, not as a universal speed winner.

10. Verisign Public DNS — unfiltered infrastructure alternative

Addresses: 64.6.64.6 and 64.6.65.6.

Verisign Public DNS is a conventional, unfiltered resolver operated by a major internet-infrastructure company. Verisign says it will not sell public-DNS data to third parties or redirect failed queries to advertising pages.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why gamers choose it: It offers another clean comparison point for users who want an unfiltered service from a large infrastructure operator.

Limitation: Its location-specific performance may be better or worse than Cloudflare, Google, or your ISP. There is no reason to select it on reputation alone without measuring it.

11. Your ISP’s DNS — the baseline that should not be skipped

Your internet provider’s resolver is not a single globally defined service, but it belongs in every comparison. It may be geographically close to you and may return CDN or service-endpoint answers that are well suited to your access network.

Why gamers choose it: It sometimes has the lowest lookup time or the most appropriate local endpoint mapping simply because it is integrated with the ISP’s network.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Limitation: ISP resolvers vary significantly in reliability, privacy practices, filtering, and performance. “Default” does not mean “slow,” and “public” does not mean “faster.” Leave DNS set to automatic to test this baseline.

Which DNS server should you use?

  • Want the simplest first test? Compare your ISP with Cloudflare.
  • Cloudflare gives inconsistent results? Test Google Public DNS next.
  • Want malware and phishing blocking? Try Quad9.
  • Want ad and tracker blocking? Try AdGuard DNS.
  • Need household filtering? Compare OpenDNS, Control D, or a configured NextDNS profile.
  • Want an unfiltered privacy-oriented alternative? Test Mullvad’s unfiltered profile or Verisign.
  • Need to diagnose one game? Start with an unfiltered provider, because filtering can make a DNS problem look like a game outage.

How to test the fastest DNS for your location

A single speed-test result is not enough. Resolver response time changes with your location, the hostname being queried, whether the answer is cached, the DNS protocol being used, and the provider’s current routing.

1. Record your ISP resolver first

Test the network as it is before changing anything. Write down the current DNS addresses if your operating system or router displays them. This is the comparison that prevents you from replacing a fast local resolver with a slower public one.

Cable Matters 10Gbps 5-Pack Snagless Cat 6 Ethernet Cable, 3ft, Black
  • High-Performance Connectivity: This Cat 6 ethernet cable is designed for superior performance, with a 24 AWG copper wire core. It provides universal connectivity as an ethernet cord for LAN network components such as PCs, servers, printers, routers, and more, ensuring reliable and fast network connections

It also supports Power over Ethernet (PoE, PoE+, PoE++) for powering devices like IP cameras, VoIP phones, and wireless access points, ensuring fast and reliable network performance.

2. Test the same resolver pairs

Compare Cloudflare, Google, Quad9, and at least one filtering option from the same device and network. Use both addresses from one provider as the preferred and alternate entries. Do not mix unrelated providers in a pair while troubleshooting: operating systems may not always use primary and secondary resolvers in the same way, and different filtering or validation policies can produce inconsistent results.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Use repeated DNS queries, not one ping

On Windows, query a relevant hostname with a chosen resolver:

nslookup example.com 1.1.1.1
nslookup example.com 8.8.8.8
nslookup example.com 9.9.9.9

Replace example.com with a real hostname used by the launcher or service you are investigating. Do not assume that the game’s website hostname is the same as its matchmaking or game-server hostname. If you have access to a hostname in the launcher’s error message, network log, or support documentation, use that. Repeat each query several times and record the response time rather than relying on one result.

On a Linux or macOS system with dig, the equivalent form is:

dig @1.1.1.1 example.com
 dig @8.8.8.8 example.com
 dig @9.9.9.9 example.com

Compare both cold-cache and warm-cache behavior where possible. A cached result may be nearly instant regardless of the resolver, while the first lookup shows more of the actual resolver path. On Windows, ipconfig /flushdns clears the local DNS cache before a new comparison:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
ipconfig /flushdns

Use cache clearing consistently. Clearing it before only one provider’s test will make the comparison misleading.

4. Test the actual game separately

After changing DNS, launch the game and test the same region, mode, and server type at similar times. Record:

  • in-game ping or latency;
  • jitter or latency variation;
  • packet loss;
  • login, matchmaking, and voice-chat reliability;
  • the selected region or server, if the game displays it.

Repeat across several matches. A DNS lookup that is 20 milliseconds faster does not mean the game session will be 20 milliseconds faster. If in-game ping, jitter, and packet loss do not improve, the resolver did not solve the gameplay bottleneck—even if it made the launcher open more quickly.

5. Interpret endpoint changes carefully

If the game’s reported latency changes after a DNS switch, repeat the test before concluding that DNS caused it. Resolver choice can sometimes influence which service endpoint a hostname returns, but the improvement may also result from a different match, server, time of day, or temporary congestion. DNS does not generally change the route of an already-established connection.

How to change DNS on Windows

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Network & internet.
  3. Select Wi-Fi or Ethernet, depending on the active connection.
  4. Open the connected network’s properties or Hardware properties.
  5. Find DNS server assignment and select Edit.
  6. Change the mode to Manual, enable IPv4, and enter the preferred and alternate addresses from one provider.
  7. Save the change, then flush the DNS cache with ipconfig /flushdns.

Windows 10 may expose the same setting through Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center > Change adapter settings. Right-click the active adapter, choose Properties, select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), and open Properties.

IPv6 DNS is optional. If your network actively uses IPv6, leaving IPv6 DNS on automatic while changing only IPv4 can produce mixed behavior. Configure IPv6 only when the provider documents the correct IPv6 addresses and your network supports them; otherwise, test IPv4 consistently first.

How to change DNS on PlayStation

On PlayStation, open Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection. Select the connection, open Options, choose Advanced Settings, set DNS Settings to Manual, and enter the preferred and alternate addresses.

PlayStation treats DNS as an advanced network setting and notes that changing it may temporarily improve some connection errors. That is not a promise of universally faster gameplay. Test the actual game after saving the setting, and restore automatic DNS if the console loses access to a required service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Router setup: convenient, but easier to misdiagnose

Changing DNS on a router applies the setting to many devices, which is convenient for a household. The exact menu varies by manufacturer and firmware; look for Internet, WAN, or DHCP/DNS settings. Enter both addresses from the same provider, save, and restart the router or reconnect clients if necessary.

It also supports Power over Ethernet (PoE, PoE+, PoE++) for powering devices like IP cameras, VoIP phones, and wireless access points, ensuring fast and reliable network performance.

Router changes can also affect phones, smart TVs, work devices, and other players. A filtered resolver that works for one game may break another household service. For diagnosis, changing DNS on the individual gaming device is safer and makes the result easier to attribute.

Some browsers and applications use their own encrypted DNS settings, which can bypass the operating system or router’s resolver for web lookups. That does not necessarily mean the game uses the same setting, so test the launcher and game rather than assuming a browser result represents the whole network.

What to do when changing DNS does not help

The game still has high ping

Check the selected game region, use Ethernet if possible, test Wi-Fi signal and interference, look for packet loss, and compare performance at different times. Bufferbloat, local congestion, ISP congestion, a poor route, or a distant server are more likely explanations than DNS when every match has high latency.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Only one game or launcher stopped working

Temporarily return to the ISP resolver or use an unfiltered service. Filtering providers can return NXDOMAIN or otherwise refuse a hostname that the game requires. If the problem disappears, use an allowlist or a less restrictive profile rather than concluding that the game’s servers are down.

Login works, but matchmaking or voice chat fails

The affected service may use a different hostname from the game’s website or login server. Check the game or platform’s support information, error logs, or network diagnostics for the relevant domain. Compare that hostname directly against the providers, and then verify the game’s actual network metrics.

DNS changes seem to do nothing

That may be the correct result. If DNS lookups are already fast and reliable, the resolver was not the limiting factor. Keep the change only if it provides a clear benefit in reliability, privacy, filtering, or endpoint selection; otherwise, automatic ISP DNS is perfectly reasonable.

Windows has broader connection problems

Optional Windows-only note: If Windows is also showing repeated browser connection failures, corrupted network settings, or broader system instability, a Windows DNS troubleshooting tool such as Outbyte PC Repair may be relevant for general system repair. It is not a DNS resolver and is not a guaranteed way to lower game ping.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common DNS mistakes gamers should avoid

  • Expecting DNS to lower every game’s ping: DNS usually affects lookup time, not established-session latency.
  • Calling one provider universally fastest: performance depends on location, ISP, hostname, cache state, protocol, and CDN behavior.
  • Assuming DNS changes your route: it can sometimes influence endpoint selection, but it does not normally reroute a live game connection.
  • Mixing providers in one pair: use a coherent primary and secondary pair while troubleshooting.
  • Testing only with a web browser: browser DoH settings and game networking can be different.
  • Ignoring filtering: blocked game, launcher, login, telemetry, or voice domains can look like connection failures.
  • Changing several network settings at once: do DNS first, record the result, and only then test Ethernet, router, Wi-Fi, or other changes.
  • Using a single match as proof: server selection and internet congestion vary from match to match.

Bottom line

For most people, test Cloudflare 1.1.1.1, Google Public DNS, and the ISP resolver first. Choose Quad9, AdGuard DNS, OpenDNS, NextDNS, Control D, or Mullvad when their security and filtering controls match your needs. Comodo and Verisign are reasonable additional comparisons.

The winner is the resolver that performs reliably from your network without breaking the game—not the provider with the most memorable IP address. Measure DNS lookups separately, then judge ping, jitter, and packet loss inside the actual game.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can changing DNS lower my ping in games?

Usually not. DNS resolves a game or launcher hostname before a connection begins; it normally does not alter the route or latency of an established multiplayer session. It can sometimes affect the endpoint a service selects, so verify any change with repeated in-game tests.

How do I find the fastest DNS server for my location?

Yes. Use the ISP resolver as your baseline, then compare Cloudflare, Google, Quad9, and any filtered option you are considering. Test repeated DNS lookups and separately record in-game ping, jitter, packet loss, and matchmaking reliability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should my primary and secondary DNS servers be from the same provider?

Use matching addresses from one provider as the preferred and alternate servers while troubleshooting. Mixing unrelated providers can create inconsistent filtering, validation, and resolver-selection behavior.

Can filtered DNS break a game?

Filtering can block a legitimate launcher, login, voice, telemetry, or matchmaking hostname. Temporarily switch to an unfiltered resolver, such as Cloudflare or Google, to diagnose the issue; if that fixes it, use an allowlist or a less restrictive profile.

The Bottom Line

Best first test: compare your ISP DNS with Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 and Google 8.8.8.8. DNS may improve lookups or endpoint selection, but it is not a guaranteed fix for in-game ping. Keep the resolver that improves your real connection without blocking required game services.
