Looking for 11 classic Atari arcade games you still need to play? This curated starter list spans landmark action games, head-to-head competition and less familiar cabinet-era picks. It is not an official ranking: the choices favor variety, recognizable arcade identities and a practical route to finding several of the games together. Each entry refers to the arcade edition, not a similarly named home-console release.
11 classic Atari arcade games to seek out
The order below is for browsing, not a scorecard. Atari’s Flashback Classics Vol. 1 identifies these titles in its arcade selection; descriptions here focus on why each belongs in a varied first tour of Atari’s arcade catalog.
1. Asteroids
A natural starting point for Atari arcade history. Asteroids debuted in 1979. The Associated Press, citing The Strong, reported in 2024 that it sold more than 70,000 arcade units, making it Atari’s best-selling coin-operated game. Jon-Paul Dyson, director of The Strong’s International Center for the History of Electronic Games, called it “an icon of the late 70s arcade.”
2. Centipede
One of the most familiar Atari arcade names, and a useful contrast to the space-themed entries elsewhere on this list. Atari includes the arcade edition in Flashback Classics Vol. 1.

Atari Flashback Classics Vol. 1
For one collection covering most of this list, Atari describes Flashback Classics Vol. 1 as a 50-title release for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Its arcade section names Asteroids, Black Widow, Centipede, Liberator, Lunar Lander, Millipede, Pong, Space Duel, Tempest and Warlords. That is ten of the eleven games above; Missile Command is not among the arcade titles named on the Vol. 1 page.
Atari also describes online play, achievements, global leaderboards, arcade bezels and overlays, and multiple display modes. Check the current storefront in your region for whether the edition is available and whether it is digital or physical before buying.
Other ways to play
Atari’s support catalog lists Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration and Flashback Classics Volumes 1, 2 and 3. That catalog establishes the products’ presence in Atari’s support listings, but not the precise contents or current availability of every edition. Check the specific platform and edition listing before choosing one.
For a dedicated cabinet, Arcade1Up’s Atari collection lists home cabinets built around Centipede, Asteroids and Tempest. Cabinet models, included games, inventory and prices can change; consult the product listing for current details.
Quick Recap
How to choose your first few
- Start with the landmark: Asteroids has the clearest historical marker in this selection: its 1979 debut and reported sales figure.
- Try different formats: Choose across the list rather than sampling only the most recognizable titles. Pong and Warlords represent the head-to-head side of the selection; Missile Command supplies its defensive-action entry.
- Use a collection to explore: Flashback Classics Vol. 1 is a practical route to ten listed games on its supported platforms, subject to current regional availability.
- Check the edition: Look for the word “arcade” in a catalog or product listing. Atari’s catalogs distinguish arcade editions from home-console versions.
