How these games compare with Overwatch
“Like Overwatch” can mean several things: character-specific abilities, recognizable team roles, objective-focused arena matches, or simply competitive team shooting. The games here are not equally close. Team Fortress 2 and Paladins most clearly echo class- or hero-based objective play. 1. Team Fortress 2
Choose Team Fortress 2 if what you want is a team shooter built around sharply differentiated classes and objective modes such as payload. Its class-specific weapons give each role a distinct identity, making it a close structural comparison to Overwatch even though its style and age are different. GameSpot lists it as free-to-play on PC and Mac in its 2025 roundup; that is a dated platform and payment snapshot, not a live availability guarantee. Marvel Rivals offers 6v6 team PvP, characters with hero powers, team-up abilities, and destructible environments. It is the most direct modern team-hero-shooter alternative in this group, but it is played from a third-person perspective rather than Overwatch’s first-person view. That changes aiming and what players can see around their character, not just the visual presentation.

Its timing matters for a 2024 recommendation: Marvel announced the game on March 27, 2024, and it released on December 6, 2024. It therefore belongs on a list of games playable in 2024 only for readers looking at the year’s final weeks. Ability-based games that change the match format
4. Apex Legends
Apex Legends gives its characters distinct abilities and puts teams into battle royale matches. Pick it for squad coordination and character identity, not for an Overwatch-style arena loop: survival and the battle royale structure change the objectives and rhythm of a match. 5. Valorant
Valorant combines character abilities with tactical, round-based gunplay. Its abilities support a more deliberate approach to positioning and engagements; it is not a fast arena shooter organized around the same continuous objective pressure as Overwatch. Choose it if you want team coordination and character utility in a more tactical format. GameSpot’s roundup distinguishes its tactical match style from Overwatch’s.

6. Rainbow Six Siege
Rainbow Six Siege is a larger shift in pace and emphasis: its Operators bring gadgets and abilities to high-stakes, round-based tactical play. It may appeal if you want team roles and character-specific tools, but it is not a close substitute for Overwatch’s more ability-forward arena combat.
