Steam is more than a store and launcher. Its menus also contain tools for sharing games, streaming them to other devices, remapping controllers, managing mods, recovering saves, repairing installations, organizing a large library, and testing purchases. “Hidden” here means buried or commonly misunderstood—not secret.
1. Steam Families replaces the old Family Sharing setup
What it does: Steam Families combines the former Family Sharing and Family View features. A family can include an organizer and up to five invited members. Eligible games can be shared while each person keeps separate saves, achievements, and Workshop data. If the family owns multiple copies of a game, multiple members can play it at the same time.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Find it: Open Steam > Settings > Family, then create or join a family and invite eligible members. The same area includes child-account controls, playtime limits, and purchase approvals. Steam’s exact labels can differ between stable and beta clients, so look for Family in Settings.
Steam Families is intended for people in the same household or family group, not general-purpose account sharing. Developers can exclude games, and DLC, subscriptions, external launchers, and separate account requirements can affect how sharing works. Shared access also does not merge progress between accounts.

Valve’s Steam Families announcement explains why older advice about one person having to stop playing before another can use a shared library is no longer a complete description of the current system.
2. Remote Play Together turns local multiplayer into online multiplayer
What it does: One person owns and runs a supported local multiplayer game while Steam streams the host’s video and audio to other players and sends their controller or keyboard-and-mouse input back to the host. Steam describes a baseline of one host plus up to four additional players, with more possible on sufficiently fast connections and where the game allows it.
Find it:
- Launch a game marked as supporting Remote Play Together.
- Open the Steam Overlay with Shift+Tab.
- Open the Friends List and choose the Remote Play Together invitation option.
- Use the session controls to manage controller access, keyboard-and-mouse sharing, audio, and voice.
Invite Anyone can let a guest join through a link without a Steam account, subject to the current client and app requirements. Supported receiving platforms have included Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android.
The host must own and run the game, and the game must support the feature. Latency depends on the host PC, upload connection, routing, and every participant’s network. Controller order can also matter, particularly when a game assigns player one to the first detected controller. See Steam Remote Play and Valve’s Remote Play update details for current support information.
3. Steam Input can remap far more than buttons
What it does: Steam Input creates per-game controller profiles. It can remap buttons, assign keyboard and mouse inputs to controller controls, adjust sensitivity, create action layers, and apply community layouts. That makes it useful for older games, strategy titles, mouse-heavy interfaces, accessibility setups, and games with weak default bindings.
Find it: Connect the controller, open the game’s Library page, select its controller icon or controller settings, and choose Edit Layout or the equivalent option. Browse official, personal, or community layouts, then save and apply one to that game.
Rank #2
Steam Input does not behave identically with every controller, operating system, driver, game, or anti-cheat system. It can also conflict with a game’s native remapper. If a controller fails, close the game, disconnect extra controllers and virtual input devices, test the default Steam layout, and then try disabling either Steam Input or the game’s own remapping system—not both at once.

4. Workshop collections preserve mod setups
What it does: Steam Workshop collections let you save groups of subscriptions, switch between mod configurations, and share a mod list with other players. This is more useful than treating Workshop as merely a download page.
Find it: For a Workshop-enabled game, open its Properties, locate the Workshop or subscription-management area, and look for Advanced Options or the collection controls. Save the current subscriptions as a collection, then create separate collections for different playthroughs or mod configurations.
Collections do not guarantee compatibility. Mods can have dependencies, load-order requirements, outdated files, or conflicts with one another. Unsubscribing may remove files or configuration data depending on the game, and user-created content can be risky. Check the author, comments, update history, dependencies, and compatibility notes before installing.
Use the Steam Workshop hub to review a game’s available Workshop tools and collections.

Find it: Open the Library, select the game, and look for its cloud-status indicator near the game details. If synchronization fails, open the status message and retry. When Steam reports a conflict, compare the local and cloud timestamps before choosing which version to keep.
Back up important save folders manually before troubleshooting. Cloud synchronization can preserve a bad or unwanted save if it is the newest version, and it does not automatically provide a complete history of earlier versions. Offline play, crashes, abrupt shutdowns, a game’s own launcher, or a separate account system can also complicate synchronization.
Steam Cloud only works as intended when the game supports it and correctly identifies its save files. Valve documents the relevant status indicators and conflict handling in its Steam Cloud update information.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware match6. Verify integrity of game files
What it does: Steam compares installed files with the files expected by Steam and reacquires missing or damaged files. It can help after interrupted updates, crashes, failed patches, or incomplete installations.
Find it:
- Open Library.
- Right-click the game and select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to finish, then restart Steam or the game if files were repaired.
Verification cannot fix a broken update distributed by the developer, incompatible mods, a separate launcher, missing drivers or redistributables, save corruption, hardware instability, or every anti-cheat problem. It may also replace modified files, so back up or document a modded installation first. Valve’s current help instructions are available in this file-verification guide.
7. Per-game launch options isolate troubleshooting changes
What it does: Steam lets you add launch arguments to one game without changing every title on the system. Depending on the game, these can select a graphics API, force windowed mode, enable logging, skip an intro, or pass an option to a launcher.

- 512 GB NVMe SSD: Fast storage for quicker game load times and space for larger game libraries.
- OLED Display: 1200x800 resolution with deep contrasts and vibrant colors for a captivating visual experience.
- Custom AMD APU: Power-efficient Zen 2 CPU and RDNA 2 GPU for desktop-level gaming performance.
- Expandable Storage: Add more space with a microSD card slot, ensuring you can bring even more games with you.
- Versatile Controls: With built-in thumbsticks, trackpads, and touchscreen controls, you have full control over your gaming experience.
Find it: Right-click the game, choose Properties, stay on General, and enter a command in Launch Options.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThere is no universal list of safe launch commands. Use syntax documented by the game’s developer or a reliable title-specific technical source. Launch options can help test DirectX versus Vulkan, fullscreen versus borderless mode, intro videos, launcher handoffs, overlays, or mods—but they can also cause crashes, disable features, or interfere with anti-cheat. Clear the field if the game becomes less stable.
8. Hide games and organize a large library
What it does: Steam can hide games from the normal Library view without uninstalling them. Collections, shelves, favorites, tags, and dynamic filters can then separate multiplayer games, backlog titles, VR software, modded installations, controller-friendly games, or a short “play next” list.
Right-click a game and choose the hide option when you want to remove visual clutter without deleting the installation or ownership. Hiding is organization—not a privacy control, parental restriction, or uninstallation method. It does not necessarily erase activity, achievements, playtime, or account records, and the game may still appear in search, storage, or account-management views.

What it does: Steam Link lets a phone, tablet, TV, supported streaming device, another PC, or compatible VR headset receive a game streamed from a computer running Steam. Unlike Remote Play Together, its main purpose is letting one player use another screen and input device; it does not turn the receiving device into a local gaming PC.
Find it:
- Install Steam Link on the receiving device.
- Sign in or pair it with the computer running Steam.
- Connect both devices to the same network where possible.
- Launch the game through Steam Link.
- Adjust streaming quality, resolution, bandwidth, and input settings if necessary.
A wired connection for the host is usually preferable. Wi-Fi congestion, router placement, hardware encoding, host performance, DRM, launchers, anti-cheat, and game-specific input behavior can all affect the result. The host PC must remain available and capable of running the game. See Steam’s Remote Play and Steam Link information for supported devices and current requirements.
Best Value
- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
10. Use the refund policy as a compatibility test
What it does: Valve’s standard policy generally allows a refund request for a game or software application made within 14 days of purchase and with less than two hours of playtime. That makes it possible to test whether a game runs acceptably before committing to it.
Within the limits of the policy, test performance, shader stutter, controller support, ultrawide or high-refresh behavior, multiplayer activity, and accessibility options. Do the important checks early: troubleshooting and configuration time commonly counts toward the two-hour limit.
The rule is not an unconditional guarantee. Early Access and Advance Access playtime counts toward the limit, while DLC, in-game purchases, bundles, subscriptions, gifts, hardware, and purchases made outside Steam can have different terms. Valve may consider abuse, and some jurisdictions provide additional consumer rights. The refund page was updated on April 23, 2024, so check the current policy before relying on the details.
Recommended Free Tools
11. The Steam Overlay is a control panel, not just a chat popup
What it does: The Overlay provides in-game access to friends, chat, guides, browser functions, achievements, invitations, screenshots, Remote Play controls, and controller-related tools.
Find it: Press Shift+Tab by default while a game is running. Use the Overlay to invite friends, open guides, configure a Remote Play session, or check achievements. Steam’s default screenshot key is normally F12; captures can be reviewed and uploaded through the screenshot manager afterward.
Some games disable or break Overlay support. Separate launchers, administrator privileges, exclusive fullscreen, anti-cheat systems, and third-party overlays can interfere with it. If nothing appears, check Steam’s global Overlay setting and the game’s per-title Properties, then restart Steam. Availability and behavior depend on the game and operating environment; no Overlay feature is guaranteed to work everywhere.
