New to Once Human? Start with the Manibus (Novice) scenario, follow the main quest until you unlock the Territory Terminal, and build a practical base near useful resources. Those choices give you room to learn survival, crafting, combat, and seasonal progression before you commit to a specialized playstyle.
1. Choose a beginner-friendly scenario
If your goal is to learn the game, start with Manibus (Novice). The official Once Human Console Launch FAQ, published August 20, 2026, recommends it so new players can become familiar with the mechanics and rules.
Scenarios are not simply different difficulty settings: they can have different maps, rules, stories, environmental mechanics, objectives, phase durations, and PvE or PvP experiences. Check the current scenario description before joining, especially if you want a particular kind of combat or progression. The FAQ’s recommendation is a starting point for learning, not a claim that every other scenario is unsuitable for beginners.
2. Let the main quest teach you the opening
Follow the main quest early rather than scattering your attention across every system at once. A beginner guide updated July 28, 2026, recommends progressing until the Territory Terminal unlocks, then establishing a base and learning the core crafting systems. The quest gives your early play a useful direction while introducing the game’s basic loop.

Once the Terminal is available, pause to get comfortable with the systems you have unlocked. The guide identifies basic survival and core crafting as early priorities, but it does not establish one universally optimal Memetics unlock order. Choose practical unlocks for what you are doing instead of copying a rigid build before you know your needs.
3. Build for convenience, not appearance
Your first territory is a working base, not a final showcase. The July 2026 beginner guide recommends choosing a location near useful resources, which can reduce avoidable trips while you gather and craft. Treat that as a travel-efficiency tip: the best spot depends on your map, scenario, and what you plan to collect, so there is no single universally correct coordinate.
Rank #2
Keep the first layout functional while you learn the area. You can invest in a more elaborate design after you understand which resources and work areas you use most.
4. Learn what carries over between scenarios
Do not assume that a new scenario either wipes everything or preserves everything. Starry Studio’s August 13, 2024 explanation of seasons and scenarios distinguishes scenario-linked experience from persistent progress. It says character level and Memetics reset according to scenario rules, while weapon and armor blueprints, blueprint fragments, accessories, mods, food recipes, and other listed resources persist.
House blueprints persist too, but the saved design is not a free standing base: rebuilding it in a new scenario requires building materials. Because scenario rules can change, read the live rules for the scenario you are entering before making a high-cost decision based on a past explanation.
5. Use Deviations for the job you need done
Think of Deviations by role rather than looking for one all-purpose “best” choice. The July 2026 beginner guide distinguishes combat support from territory tasks and offers early examples for different needs:
Rank #4
- Combat support: Festering Gel is an example the guide highlights for helping in combat.
- Logging: Nutcracker is one example it names for a territory task.
- Crops: Growshroom is an example it associates with crop-related work.
These are guide recommendations, not a universal ranking. Pick according to whether you need help fighting, gathering, or managing your territory, and check current in-game descriptions for what a Deviation does.
6. Treat survival and crafting as a loop
Early progress involves more than fighting: survival needs, gathering, crafting, and base upkeep feed into one another. When you hit a bottleneck, identify whether you need a resource, a crafting unlock, or a better routine before spending effort elsewhere. The available beginner guide supports learning basic survival and core crafting early, but it does not establish a single order that suits every player or scenario.

7. Hold off on specializing until you have a reason
It is tempting to commit quickly to a build or spend unlocks based on a guide’s preferred route. Instead, learn what you actually do most—combat, gathering, crafting, or territory work—and then focus your choices around that. The scenario and your immediate needs matter, so treat other players’ recommendations as options rather than rules.
8. Check scenario rules before making a big commitment
Scenarios can differ in objectives, phases, maps, and gameplay rules. Before investing heavily in a particular plan, inspect the current scenario’s rules and progression details in-game. This is especially useful when a decision depends on what resets, what persists, or how a scenario’s PvE or PvP experience works.
9. Keep your first plans adaptable
As you learn the map and unlock more systems, your priorities may change. A resource-rich base location, an early crafting focus, or a particular Deviation may be useful now without being the best long-term choice. Build and unlock for your present needs, and avoid treating an early decision as permanent unless the game’s current rules say it is.
10. Use guides as context, not a substitute for the game’s current rules
Beginner guides can help identify useful early priorities, but they may not cover every scenario or update. The July 2026 guide is useful for the Terminal, practical base placement, crafting, and Deviation examples; official scenario descriptions are the better reference for current rules and differences. When the two answer different questions, use the guide for general orientation and the live scenario information for its specific rules.
11. Spend effort on learning the systems, not buying a shortcut
The beginner decisions covered here are in-game choices: scenario, quest progression, base placement, crafting, and Deviations. The cited sources do not establish a required physical edition, manual, peripheral, or other product for learning them. Focus first on understanding the game systems and the rules of the scenario you chose.
