Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallThe fastest way to increase GPU performance is to find the component or setting limiting your system first. A GPU running at full load needs a different solution from one waiting on the CPU, overheating, hitting a power limit, compiling shaders, or assigned to the wrong adapter. The steps below cover higher FPS, better 1% lows, lower latency, reduced noise, and faster rendering or compute workloads—without promising a fixed percentage gain for every PC.
Measure performance before changing anything
Start with a repeatable baseline. Choose the same game scene or built-in benchmark and run it at least three times. Record average FPS, 1% lows or other percentile results, frame times, GPU utilization, clock speed, temperature and hotspot temperature where available, power draw, VRAM use, CPU utilization by core, system RAM use, resolution, graphics preset, upscaling mode, ray tracing settings, and driver version.

- Keep the resolution, preset, driver, and background applications unchanged.
- Run the same test three or more times.
- Change only one setting or system variable.
- Restart the game and repeat the test.
- Record image-quality, temperature, noise, and stability changes as well as FPS.
Average FPS alone can hide severe stutter. Frame-time graphs and 1% lows are often more useful for diagnosing an inconsistent experience.

Identify the bottleneck
GPU utilization is useful, but it is not conclusive. A GPU may show low utilization while waiting for the CPU, shader compilation, asset streaming, storage, a frame-rate cap, V-Sync, or an engine synchronization point.
| Observation | Likely direction |
|---|---|
| GPU stays near full load and lowering resolution raises FPS substantially | GPU-bound |
| GPU usage is moderate, one CPU core is saturated, and lowering resolution changes little | CPU-bound |
| Clock speed falls as temperature rises | Thermal limit |
| Power reaches the board limit while clocks plateau | Power limit |
| VRAM is full and stutter occurs while moving through the world | VRAM or asset-streaming pressure |
| Performance changed immediately after a driver update | Driver regression or shader rebuild |
| Stutter disappears when overlays close | Software conflict |
| FPS is fixed at the display refresh rate | Frame cap, V-Sync, or display setting |
NVIDIA’s GPU programming guidance makes the central point: improving the CPU side does not help if the GPU remains the limit, and improving the GPU does not help if the CPU remains the limit.
1. Update—or deliberately roll back—the graphics driver
Install the current driver directly from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel, and check its release notes for your game or application. Reboot after installation and allow the game to finish shader compilation before comparing results.
A newer driver is not automatically faster in every title. If a problem began immediately after an update, test the previous known-good version. AMD recommends checking release notes, using a clean installation when appropriate, and reverting to a driver that did not exhibit the problem. Microsoft also documents rollback as a remedy for graphics problems that begin after an update.
Use a clean installation when switching GPU brands, repeated installer failures, crashes across multiple games, corrupted control-panel settings, or unexplained performance changes affect many applications. AMD’s Cleanup Utility removes existing AMD graphics and audio drivers; AMD recommends Safe Mode for the best result and requires a reboot afterward.
2. Select the high-performance GPU in Windows 11
On laptops and systems with integrated and discrete graphics, Windows may assign a game to the power-saving adapter.
- Open Settings.
- Go to System > Display > Graphics.
- Select the game under the app list.
- Choose Options.
- Select High performance, then Save.
- Restart the game.
Microsoft documents the High performance, Power saving, and Let Windows decide choices. The same page covers Optimizations for windowed games, which applies to compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games in windowed or borderless modes and can interact with Auto HDR and variable refresh rate.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Laptop manufacturers commonly reduce GPU power on battery, and an external display may be physically routed to a particular adapter.

3. Enable Resizable BAR, Smart Access Memory, or the platform equivalent
Resizable BAR allows the CPU to access a larger portion of a discrete GPU’s frame buffer rather than a small fixed mapping. It can improve performance in supported configurations, but the gain is game- and platform-dependent rather than universal. AMD calls its implementation Smart Access Memory.
- Update the motherboard BIOS if required.
- Enter BIOS/UEFI during startup.
- Enable Above 4G Decoding.
- Enable Resizable BAR or the equivalent setting.
- Disable CSM/Legacy Mode if required.
- Confirm the operating system boots in UEFI mode.
- Save, reboot, and verify the feature in your GPU software.
Labels vary by motherboard. Intel’s documented procedure requires UEFI and disabled CSM. Intel also says Resizable BAR or Smart Access Memory must be enabled for optimal performance in supported Arc desktop configurations. Some older systems need a BIOS update.
Warning: Disabling CSM can expose a legacy boot configuration that will not start correctly. Know how to restore the previous BIOS settings before changing them. If performance worsens or the system becomes unstable, disable the feature and retest. NVIDIA describes its benefit as potential rather than guaranteed.
4. Optimize graphics settings instead of lowering everything
Lowering the entire preset often sacrifices image quality where it matters while leaving the real bottleneck untouched. Change settings according to their cost.
- Usually GPU-heavy: resolution, render scale, ray tracing, global illumination, shadows, volumetrics, reflections, ambient occlusion, anti-aliasing, and some view-distance settings.
- Usually VRAM-heavy: texture quality and high-resolution texture packs. Lowering textures may barely change FPS until VRAM is exhausted, after which streaming can cause hitching and frame-time spikes.
- Usually CPU-heavy: crowd density, simulation, physics, foliage distance, object distance, NPC count, traffic, and background world activity.
Keep textures high when VRAM allows. Reduce ray tracing, volumetrics, and shadows before lowering every basic quality setting. Use render scale or an upscaler to preserve more apparent detail than a blanket low preset. NVIDIA’s latency and graphics guidance also emphasizes that image quality, performance, and latency involve trade-offs.
5. Use upscaling, dynamic resolution, and frame generation intelligently
DLSS, FSR, XeSS, and engine-native dynamic resolution can increase rendered FPS by reducing internal resolution while maintaining the selected output resolution. Test the game’s Quality, Balanced, and Performance modes at your target resolution.
Upscaling can introduce softness, shimmering, ghosting, or lost detail. Frame generation can increase the displayed frame rate without proportionally increasing the game’s internally rendered frame rate. It does not remove a CPU bottleneck and can add latency or artifacts when the base frame rate is too low. Support, quality, and naming vary by game and GPU generation, so compare the result using frame-time and latency measurements rather than the headline FPS number.

6. Fix thermal throttling and airflow
Verify that temperature is actually reducing clock speed before treating it as the problem. Monitor GPU core temperature, hotspot temperature, memory temperature where available, clock speed over time, board power, and thermal or power-limit indicators. There is no single safe temperature for every GPU; limits vary by architecture, firmware, board, sensor, and workload.

- Use an open side panel only as a diagnostic comparison, not a permanent fix.
Replacing thermal paste or pads can help aging hardware but may affect warranty coverage and requires careful disassembly. Higher fan speeds can reduce temperatures while increasing noise and fan wear. If clocks were already stable, a temperature reduction alone may not increase FPS.
7. Tune voltage, clocks, memory, and power limits carefully
GPU tuning can improve performance, efficiency, or sustained clocks, but it is not a first-line fix and can cause crashes, artifacts, driver resets, data loss, or warranty limitations.
Conservative overclock
Where supported, raise the power limit, then increase core clock in small steps. Tune memory separately and test after every change. Stop at the first visual corruption, crash, driver reset, or performance regression.
Undervolt
Select a lower voltage/frequency point and compare sustained clocks, temperature, power, and FPS. A lower power draw can sometimes prevent throttling and improve sustained performance, but an undervolt is not guaranteed to be faster or stable on every card.
Automatic tuning
Compatible NVIDIA and AMD software includes automatic or semi-automatic tuning. AMD Adrenalin documents GPU and VRAM tuning, power controls, and stress testing; a failed stress test can reset tuning to defaults. NVIDIA Debug Mode can temporarily force reference clock speeds to help determine whether crashes are caused by a factory or user overclock.
AMD warns that its consumer warranty does not cover damage caused by overclocking, including tuning enabled through AMD software. Keep a stock profile and test demanding games, benchmarks, long sessions, rendering, encoding, compute, idle, sleep, and resume behavior.
8. Remove background conflicts and unnecessary GPU usage
Browsers with hardware acceleration, recording software, Discord or chat overlays, RGB utilities, monitoring tools, launchers, cloud sync, virtual machines, remote-desktop software, antivirus scans, and multiple overlay systems can consume GPU cycles, VRAM, CPU time, or hook into the render path.

9. Use per-game vendor driver profiles
Per-application settings are safer than global overrides. In NVIDIA Control Panel, use the application-specific 3D settings and, only when troubleshooting incorrect clock behavior, test Power management mode > Prefer maximum performance for the affected game. NVIDIA documents this setting as a remedy for applications that incorrectly reduce clock speeds and produce low FPS.
Use it per game rather than globally: maximum-performance behavior can increase idle power, heat, and fan activity. AMD Software: Adrenalin supports per-game profiles and tuning controls. Intel Arc users should keep drivers current and verify platform requirements, especially Resizable BAR. If a forced driver setting conflicts with the game, return the profile to application-controlled defaults.
10. Correct power delivery and system power behavior
A GPU may be power-limited by an undersized or aging PSU, a loose connector, incorrect modular-cable distribution, laptop battery operation, a motherboard or BIOS setting, or a monitoring utility that changed the power target.
- Reseat the GPU and every PCIe power connector.
- Use the manufacturer-recommended cable arrangement.
- Avoid unapproved adapters.
- Close monitoring and tuning utilities during driver installation.
- Use the laptop manufacturer’s performance mode while plugged in.
- Compare observed GPU power with the expected range for the exact model.
NVIDIA documents a case where a monitoring utility left open during driver installation could inadvertently leave a lower power target and reduce game performance. Do not use a universal PSU wattage rule: the correct requirement depends on the exact GPU, CPU, transient behavior, PSU quality, and other components.
11. Upgrade the component that is actually limiting performance
If the GPU remains near full load, temperatures and clocks are normal, settings and drivers are correct, and the target still cannot be met, a faster GPU may be the only substantial improvement. Check VRAM capacity, case clearance, connector requirements, and PSU compatibility before buying.
Consider a CPU, RAM, or platform upgrade when GPU utilization is often low, one or more CPU cores are saturated, lowering resolution barely changes FPS, simulation or streaming causes frame-time spikes, memory pressure causes paging, or the motherboard lacks useful PCIe or Resizable BAR support.
Do not compare laptop and desktop cards by product name alone. Laptop GPUs can have different power limits, cooling, firmware, and display routing, even when the branding is similar. Modern games also generally do not combine two consumer GPUs for proportional performance; multi-GPU compute is a separate workload.
The safest order of operations
- Define the target: average FPS, 1% lows, latency, image quality, power, noise, or compute time.
- Capture a repeatable baseline.
- Check GPU assignment, frame caps, V-Sync, thermals, clocks, power, VRAM, and CPU per-core usage.
- Correct Windows graphics selection and update or roll back the driver.
- Enable Resizable BAR or SAM when supported and safe.
- Optimize game settings and test upscaling or frame generation.
- Remove overlays and background conflicts.
- Improve cooling and verify power delivery.
- Apply conservative tuning only after the system is otherwise correct.
- Upgrade the limiting component if the bottleneck remains.
Symptom-based troubleshooting
High GPU usage but low FPS
High usage can simply mean the GPU is the bottleneck. Check clock speed, temperature, power limit, VRAM pressure, render resolution, ray tracing, frame caps, V-Sync, and whether the correct GPU is selected.

Low GPU usage and low FPS
Check CPU per-core utilization, background processes, GPU assignment, power-saving modes, driver profiles, asset streaming, shader compilation, and engine limitations.
Stutter after changing settings
Restart the game, let shader compilation finish, revert the last change, disable overlays, compare frame-time graphs, and check VRAM and system RAM pressure.
Crashes after overclocking
- Return GPU tuning to default.
- Temporarily disable XMP or EXPO if instability continues.
- Use NVIDIA Debug Mode where applicable.
- Retest at stock settings.
- If stable, retune one parameter at a time.
CPU and system-memory overclocks can also cause games to crash.
